ISLAMABAD: Several heavily armed rival groups on Wednesday launched major attacks against the Pakistan Taliban in Mohmand tribal region along the border with Afghanistan to expel the group's supporters from the area, a Taliban commander said.
Omar Mukarram Khurasani, spokesman for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Mohmand agency, told The Express Tribune that hundreds of militants were resisting the opponents.
Khurasni said via phone from Mohmand agency that nearly 400 armed members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Ansar-ul-Islam and the local anti-Taliban lashkar launched the attack early Wednesday at the strategic and historic Jarobi Darra, bordering Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province.
He said the rivals groups also launched attacks on TTP supporters at two locations on the Afghan side of the border, bordering Mohmand agency.

The areas include Shunkrey and Maya, where hundreds of the TTP members had been living, dozens with families, after fleeing military operations in Mohmand agency.
"There are reports of casualties on both sides however I cannot share exact information about the casualties," the TTP commander said.
He said the TTP did not want fighting and had also called for mediation to avoid the clash. "However, the rivals were bent upon attacking TTP supporters in the region."
Asked as to why the rivals launched the offensive against the TTP, Khurasani alleged that "Our opponents launched the operation on the behest of the Pakistani security agencies."
He went on to say that the rivals want to control the areas and that is why they launched the attacks against the Pakistani Taliban.
"Our people are showing stiff resistance to the attacks," the TTP spokesman said, adding that both sides are using heavy weapons including mortars.
Independent verification of the events is difficult as journalists have no access to the rugged mountains.
Some experts familiar with the area said that it was secure for the TTP militants who fled military operations and arrived in the rugged mountains of Mohmand agency.
One expert, requesting not to be named, was of the view that the TTP is under mounting pressure after security forces took control of the TTP stronghold of Maidan in Tirah Valley of Khyber agency, this month.
The TTP spokesman, Eshsanullah Ehsan had earlier accused Lashkar-e-Taiba and Ansarul Islam of hatching a plot to attack its bases and supporters in Mohmand Agency with the support of the local 'lashkar' called Mohmand Force.
TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan had told The Express Tribune this month that the two groups had reached a pact with the local anti-Taliban forces.
"We will fight back and there will be bloodshed," he had stated in an interview on June 8.
The Lashkar-e-Taiba had rejected the TTP's claim, arguing that its activities were only limited to Indian Kashmir.
"We neither work in Afghanistan nor in Pakistan's tribal regions. We do not have any links with any group in the tribal regions," LeT spokesman Abdullah Ghaznavi had told The Express Tribune via phone from an undisclosed location.
There had been concerns earlier that a commander of the Afghan Taliban, Abdul Rahim, who had lost his son in fighting with the TTP supporters in Kunar provinvce, had also announced to support the anti-TTP operations. However, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Afghan Taliban spokesman, had denied any involvement and said Afghan Taliban will not allow its people to carry out any operations outside Afghanistan.
The Express Tribune has learnt that a negotiation team of the Afghan Taliban and the TTP had held talks following the tensions and resolved their differences.

Is it the outcome of 600 million secret fund to ISI?

Asked as to why the rivals launched the offensive against the TTP, Khurasani alleged that "Our opponents launched the operation on the behest of the Pakistani security agencies."
Now that the civil war has started, time to officially declare Pakistan a failed state.

This was bound to happen and I posted 2 weeks ago about the same...

ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Saturday accused Lashkar-e-Taiba and Ansarul Islam of hatching a plot to attack its bases and supporters in Mohmand Agency.

TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told The Express Tribune that the two groups had reached a pact with the local anti-Taliban forces.
However, the TTP vowed that it would fight back any such coordinated assault. "We will fight back and there will be bloodshed," he said. According to Ehsan, the two groups had planned the operation due to an old rivalry with the Taliban. The Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) rejected the TTP's claim, arguing that its activities were only limited to the Indian-administered Kashmir."We neither work in Afghanistan nor in Pakistan's tribal regions. We do not have any links with any group in the tribal regions," LeT spokesman Abdullah Ghaznavi told The Express Tribune via phone from an undisclosed location.

The TTP spokesman appeared concerned at the impression created by his group's rivals that the Afghan Taliban had also turned against the Pakistani Taliban."We hope that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will realise the conspiracy of the TTP rivals," Ehsan said. The TTP uses the term 'Islamic Emirate' for the Afghan Taliban."We have shown allegiance to the Islamic Emirate and accept their leadership and if they have any complaint we are ready to satisfy them," the TTP spokesman said.

Two Afghan Taliban officials said in response that they did not want to be involved in any fighting outside Afghanistan."We are fighting foreign forces and their local backers in Afghanistan and have never been involved in any activity in any other country," the Taliban officials said.

Friction developed between TTP fighters in Mohmand Agency and some Afghan Taliban in Kunar province last year. As a result the two groups were involved in armed clashes. The fighting eventually led to the death of a son of Afghan Taliban leader Abdul Mateen, an Afghan journalist in Kunar told The Express Tribune by telephone on Saturday. At that point a senior Afghan Taliban leader reconciled with the TTP fighters. However, some supporters of the Afghan Taliban leader rejected the agreement, the Afghan journalist said.

There have been local tribals who have fought with the Taliban ( whatever name you give them). Earlier Pakistani forces never supported them in their fight for obvious reasons and these local tribesmen suffered at the hands of the Taliban. http://www.longwarjournal.org/threat-matrix/archives/2010/03/how_not_to_wage_a_counterinsur.php]How not to wage a counterinsurgency - Threat Matrix[/url]

OTOH these Pakistanis are very confused, one day TTP is their arch enemy, then the other day they become heroes who will take on the might of the Indian Army and then again they become villains to be killed off. No wonder most of the KP area is no go for the Pak Army and unfortunately their Frontier Corp, chaps are routinely executed by the Taliban.

I'm confused. If TTP and LeT are at each other's throats, how is it that the Afghans are responsible.
Aren't the two childlings of PA-ISI ??
LeT is an arm of Pak Army. This is not the first time they have worked against TTP.

TTP is anti Pak Army. Taliban Afghanistan works with Pak Army (not necessarily under or for).

This is indeed a good move.
This move aims to squeeze TTP in-between Afghan Taliban on one side and LeT on the other.
Afghanistan Taliban needs support from Pakistani establishment to realize the dream of emirates of Afghanistan and LeT will be suitably rewarded for being loyal to ISI.

By inducing one outlawed organisation against other Pakistan is free from the hassles like excessive abuse of human rights issue and other things that a uniformed soldier was unable to do.
Also it saves the face of Pakistani army which was increasingly proving to be ineffective against rag-tag TTP.

secondly, whether LeT has the requisite strength to take on TTP is a question, but we have seen SSG commandos operating alongside LeT militants in their BAT ( border action team), so inter-operate-ability will not be a problem.

But, this operation has a potential to turn into Punjabi vs Pashtun conflict as most of their operative of LeT and TTP are from Punjab and Pashtun dominated areas respectively.
but, here Pakistan is banking upon Afghanistan Taliban to wean away the support base of TTP among Pashtuns.

So, lets see whether TTP pays up for defying their masters or Pakistan bleeds into anarchy.

Sounds like a good plan prima facie, but it will further polarize NWFP/tribal areas against the mainstream Pakistan.
Might turn out to be a bad investment in the long run. Who is to stop more TTPs from popping up.

A resident economic model for NWFP and other tribal areas to sustain themselves - is the answer. Till the Pakistanis want to use these regions on either side of durand line for strategic depth, this will not happen.

Virendra

TTP fighters can just run away to Afghanistan or Karachi. Poor local Pashtuns will have to bear the brunt of LeT. Also some fireworks in Karachi.

After using Hafeez Saeed to hand out a fatwa against the TTP on the jihad in Pakistan, the Pak army now has used their proxy, the LeT, to do a direct attack.

Comes across as quite well calculated since this diverts the attention of the TTP from the PA to the LeT, and with the US armed forces on their way out, the PA would rather like to concentrate its efforts and energies on Afghanistan.

The problem comes in the difference in the PoV of the PA and the politicians, where on one hand a section within the PA wants to go hard on the TTP, but the politicians want to have a dialogue and find a way to peace.
