Two Lebanese army officers charged with spying for Israel

2009-06-16 08:42:37 GMT2009-06-16 16:42:37 (Beijing Time) Xinhua English

BEIRUT, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Two senior Lebanese army officers were charged by the military prosecutor with spying for Israel, local Al-Akhbar daily reported on Tuesday.

A court official said the two colonels were charged with providing Israel with aid and information on military and security positions as well as civilian locations.

Col. Mansour Diab, head of the Lebanese army academy for Special Forces, was arrested last month by the army intelligence service on charges of collaborating with Israel and possessing communication systems for contact with the Israelis.

Col. Shahid Toumieh was also arrested last month on spying charges and illegally entering Israeli territories.

Suspects in the Israeli-linked spying cell have risen to 100 since April. They were accused of providing Israel with information on Hezbollah which fought a devastating 34-day war with Israel in July 2006, and also of helping the Israelis determine Lebanese army locations.

Lebanon is still in a war state with Israeli, and all citizens are banned from having any contact with the Israelis. Convicted spies face either life in prison or death penalty if found guilty of participating in killing Lebanese

Lebanese army officer spying suspect flees to Israel
2009-07-08 08:55:53 GMT2009-07-08 16:55:53 (Beijing Time) Xinhua English

BEIRUT, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese security sources revealed on Wednesday that an army officer suspected of spying for the Israeli Mossad (intelligence agency) has fled to Israel, local Al-Akhbar daily reported.

The Lebanese army colonel, identified as D.J., escaped to Israel last week according to the report, after he left his parent's home in south Lebanon town of Qlaiaa and never came back.

He had informed his mother that he was leaving for his house in Baabda on the outskirts of Beirut for one night and would be back the following morning. His sister informed the Lebanese army intelligence later of her brother's disappearance.

The Lebanese army carried out investigations that led to the information on his fleeing to Israel.

Two Lebanese high-ranking army officers were detained in May and June respectively, on charges of spying for Israel, while over20 people were also arrested on charges of belonging to Israeli-linked spying networks.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said on Tuesday that the Israeli spying networks are a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty.

Lebanon, still in a state of war with Israel, forbids any contact with the Jewish state.

Blasts in Lebanon near Israel border trigger panic
AP
Published: July 14, 2009, 21:04

Beirut: A series of explosions in an abandoned building near Lebanon's tense border with Israel was caused by a fire in a Hezbollah weapons depot, a Lebanese security official said on Tuesday.

The blasts caused no casualties, but took place on the third anniversary of the monthlong summer war between Israel and the militant group and triggered panic among residents.

The depot in the village of Khirbet Silim, about 16km north of the border, was housed in an abandoned building and was likely used during the 2006 war, added the official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

The explosions caused a fire in the building and Lebanese soldiers and firefighters sealed the area off to keep journalists away.

Andrea Tenenti, a spokesman for UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon, said Unifil was investigating the incident and had not yet determined the cause of the explosions. Hezbollah officials were not immediately available for comment.

Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah fought a fierce but inconclusive war in 2006.

A UN-brokered cease-fire that ended the fighting put the zone between the border with Israel and the Litani River to the north under control of Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers. The region has been relatively quiet since although Hezbollah has boasted that it has returned to border areas and is suspected of maintaining secret weapons stashes there.

Hezbollah has refused to disarm although UN Security Council Resolution 1701 reaffirms the need for militias in Lebanon to turn in their weapons. Hezbollah argues that its arsenal is needed to defend the country against Israel.

Lebanese soldiers deployed in south Lebanon in the wake of the 2006 war for the first time in 30 years.
