The United States should take a cue from the leaders of emerging powers like India and Brazil who put economics at the centre of their foreign policies, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged policymakers. "When their leaders approach a foreign policy challenge -- just as when they approach a domestic challenge -- one of the first questions they ask is, 'how will this affect our economic growth?'" she told the Economic Club of New York in what was billed as a major economics and foreign policy speech.

"We need to be asking the same question -- not because the answer will dictate our foreign policy choices, but because it must be a significant part of the equation," she said declaring she is updating US foreign policy priorities to include economics "every step of the way."

The United States must position itself to lead in a world "where security is shaped in boardrooms and on trading floors -- as well as on battlefields," Clinton said noting "We have seen governments toppled by economic crisis."

The United States is "modernising (its) agenda on trade, investment and commercial diplomacy to deliver jobs and growth for the American people," she said. But Washington cannot compete if it is frozen in domestic political fights.

"Washington has to end the culture of political brinksmanship -- which, I can tell you, is raising questions around the world about our leadership."

Asked how corporate strength could be used to benefit the creation of jobs and enhance economic growth in the United States, Clinton acknowledged "It's not as though American companies go invest in China or India or Brazil and there's no benefit back home. there is."

"But the quality of the benefit, the amount of the benefit, and the durability of the benefit depend upon decisions we make here as to how we think about our competitive stance in this new challenging environment."

The world's "strategic and economic centre of gravity is shifting east", she said and the United States is now focusing more on the Asia-Pacific region.

Yes, and once their ego has been massaged, they sink back into their complacent world of believing that India is on a one way street that ultimately leads to superpower status. Bah Humbug!

Unfortunately, it is not India but China which has really enmeshed economic mercantalism and foreign policy most successfully. The number of deals Chinese state owned companies have struck in Africa for natural resources in the past 10 years now squarely puts Africa in the Chinese sphere of influence. It already has more weight in the Middle East as a major purchaser, and its economy is the biggest customers of many ASEAN countries. India has a lot of catching up to do, and must move fast and aggressively if it is not to miss out on the most lucrative opportunities that are out there. With an impotent foreign ministry, I wonder whether we can match China step for step though.

Great chinese machine that is losing out on burma and vietnam to India. We have good relations with the middle east and africa. Do read up...instead of peddling the propaganda.

The success we've had in Myanmar is tactical not strategic, so the jury is out on that one. Great if we could nail it though. Vietnam has bad relations with China and it is good that we're exploiting that to our advantage, although I wouldn't call it a coup de grace. We need to pencil in a strategic alliance with Japan to really make our mark in the geopolitical scene in Asia.

China buys far more from the Middle East than us, and the oil supplier nations have only one alliance- who'll give them more petrodollars?

They buy more because there demand is more. Unlike the west we can buy from every country in the middle east.

Japan is a pawn of usa...whatever will happen will have to be approved by usa. Because of chinese pressure the yanks wont push it through.

I bet lip service like this greatly massages the ego of most of the Indians.
Naah ! we all know where our political leadership is taking us and what US wants from us, today everything is money whether it's in our banks or in our private accounts no matter if it is black money.

India has put Economy higher in her list of priorities, because that's the only way. Its an act out of compulsion, and not by choice.
