You are contradicting yourself.. which target near the airbase takes 2.5 hours to reach 🤔 For a point defence role, Tejas has enough endurance to reach with full load..
2.5 hours WITHOUT ANY LOAD, with a straight flightpath, without AB use....
And 2.5 hours at what speed? mach 0,5? mach 0,95?

Too many variables. Lets take data from worst reliable source(wikipedia) for options.
Tejas
1,850 km (1,150 mi, 459 nmi)
3,200 km (1,986 mi, 1,726 nmi) with 2x external drop tanks

F-16
4,217 km (2,620 mi, 2,277 nmi) with drop tanks

Gripen
3,200 km (2,000 mi, 1,700 nmi)

J-10
3,800 km (2,400 mi, 2,100 nmi)

Mig-21
660 km (410 mi, 360 nmi) clean at 11,000 m (36,089 ft)
604 km (375 mi; 326 nmi) at 11,000 m (36,089 ft) with two R-3S missiles
793 km (493 mi; 428 nmi) at 10,000 m (32,808 ft) with two R-3S missiles and 800 l (210 US gal; 180 imp gal) drop-tank

JF-17
3,500 km (2,200 mi, 1,900 nmi) with 3 external drop tanks

To which u want to compare to and what are the options?

This us what happens when you don't know what you're taking about.. You let an equally clueless foreigner discredit you stuff. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Ok, let's see what info we've got.

1.
...ferry flight from Bangalore to Jaisalmer with two 1200lt & 1 a 725lt drop tank.
They landed with 800 kg of fuel left. Flying at around FL 280-290 (28000-29000 feet).
So the jet took off with internal 2500kg fuel, external (2×1080kg)+580kg fuel.

It travelled 1700km like that & has 800 kg left (unclear whether in drop-tanks or in total, assumed the former because of next case).

2.
With two tanks, they used to fly nonstop from Bangalore to Jodhpur with 500 kgs of fuel left in the tank..
So the jet took off with internal 2500kg fuel, external 2160kg fuel.

After about a distant of ±1600km being flown in a less draggy config (unknown altitude) it has 500kg left in the tanks.

So...
Image
We have the above loadout cruising 1700km with 1940kg fuel, & the following config cruising 1600km on 1660kg fuel (that's how shit the present central droptanks are).

Didn't get anything u mentioned. Can u explain? source of statements too.

Ofcourse.

Source is IR on BRF.

What we get is that Tejas at 3DT clean-config (2.7ton starting load), can fly roughly 1700km by burning 1940kg fuel... About 2200km before it has to jettisson the droptanks & switch to internal.

So, while we can't know the additional penalty from the extra drag & load, we atleast have a better idea what sort of range these could achieve.

Also at 2DT clean-config (2.1ton starting load), can fly about 1600km with 1660kg fuel... Ie, near 2000km before it has to jettisson the droptanks & switch to internal.

Ahpgain we can get an idea of what the range could be for common loadouts like these:

Interconnected factors like altitude, load-vs-drag, changing internal fuel etc. each play a role in this.. making 100% accurate prediction impossible. But these are ballparks. You can even tell why the 3rd central droptank is not used. Apparently because in these cases it barely yield any significant range increment compared to the bigger ones, while burning a lot of extra fuel!

Saying 2hrs, 3hrs etc is a very retarded way to misguide laymans that's commonly done.

Can be wrong but i guess CAP/CAS sorties plan is time bound based, thus endurance is taken in time for some pre determined parameters. Data provided above is used for combat/ferry range. Guess HVT can clear that if someone asks.

Yes. You don't want too much external fuel during a CAP, as you may have to prematurely ditch the tank/s.. Especially as Tejas is to be deployed in forward bases.

The Gripen seems the most nearer.
