Malayasia sends RFI to manufacturers of Russian Yak-130, Indian Tejas, Pakistani-Chinese JF-17, Italian Aermacchi MB-339 and South Korean T-50.
March 27, 2019

Tender to purchase 18 light-fighter jets with option to be extended for 18 more.
This is Tejas's first RFI, I believe... IAF's FOC version might be too costly to win, but the 8.5G airframe downgraded to IOC+ standard actually would be superior to all its competitors. Not to mention, it never crashed & is the only one compatible with Russian, American, European & Israeli tech/arms!

Export order might just be the thing to change that mindset & attitude, as i maintain.

If they get taste of the game, they'll want to play...
If they want to win, they'll need to get into shape...

HAL CAN BE WHERE ISRO IS!!!

Question:
Are there any structural differences between LCA Trainer & LCA Navy Mark 1 models (not-levcons)?

Its an old news now from AeroIndia2019 that LCA has become MWF. Earlier Ajai Shukla was bad mouthing LCA Tejas mk1/mk1a. Now it looks like he opened a campaign against MWF Tejas mk2 with clear purpose given in his own words "criticise & stall indigenisation."

Things have changed in last 4 years. Now all agencies are on the same page for Tejas mk1a and mk2 - the Gov, ADA, HAL and IAF as well. Tejas project have gone beyond stalling/killing. Shukla can do nothing in this now.

How can IAF remain stuck with dreaming of "lightness" for 20 years ? Nothing in hand except sweet dreams !
Within 20 years their thinking must change unless they are unprofessional.
Suppose they were given 200 LCA 20 years ago ..
Wouldn't they ask for a change to "medium" after 20 years.

INSAS was designed and produced and given to forces 20 years ago. They took it, remained with it and are now ready to throw it like all armies in the world are throwing away 5.56. They have the right to ask for a new thing after 20 years.

There can not be heartburns for desire for a new thing after 20 years. No one will buy an ambassador today.

The most valid point to be considered-
At 13.5 tons f404 is underpowered.
Now at 17 tons will F414 be sufficiently powered?

I don't know where you get those figures from. The thrust of the F404 is 11,000lbs dry and 17,700 wet. The F414 is 13,000lbs dry and 22,000 wet.

Afterburners are only used in critical situations as it burns several times more fuel per minute and increases wear on the engine. The figure that matters most for real world use is dry thrust.

With only 2000lbs more thrust and an increased engine weight the gains will be minimal. What needs to be done is reduce the weight of Tejas of its own internal structure to garner more payload and or fuel stores.

It's not really relevant as fighters don't do hard maneuvering at MTOW.

In case of a WVR dogfight Tejas MarkMark 2 would weigh max 12-13 tons, with full internal fuel & missiles on all wing-pylons.
On top of that Mark 1A is expected to have weigh reduction to some extent & Mark 2 to have canards... with both getting design aerodynamics improved to increase performance.

Actually that's very underwhelming (expect a few moments), almost lazy. Watch Mirage-2000 maneuvering.
Tejas did much better in Bahrain Airshow! I'm guessing this guy got the ride only in 2017-18 & don't have many hours in it yet.

The designed MTOW is not just for thrust but also depends on the airframe rigidity.
Also, Tejas Mk1/Mk1A is known to have unnecessary aerodynamic drag.

You are buying 114 MMRCA according to the RFI.

Ultimate waste of money is buying a bunch of foreign kit just to swap it out for indigenous kit a few years later. You must get the money's worth out of it first.

Safran has been ready with a contract ready to sign for re-engined Kaveri with M88 cores.
How much content in re-engineered Kaveri be Indian? Does that mean it includes TOT to make new Engine within India with M88 core?

GE-404 is not enough to match Mirage. Also I think the FOC version with expanded envelope maybe we can see more in the next aero India.
