6 tonnes is a significant leap. Is that merely a question of the orbit being lower( LEO) or some real modification of the GSLV Mk 3? Layman's question, again.:)
It is 5.4 tonnes to LEO bro. Because of LEO, they are calling it LVM3 instrad of GSLV Mk III.

7.5 tonnes to GTO will come only after integration of SCE-200 engine.
It can carry 8000Kgs to Lower Earth Orbit
10,000 kg. Rated cap is 10 tonnes as per ISRO website even if they said only 8,000 kg for first rocket. They were also building a bigger fuel tank to bring GTO capacity to 5 tonnes itself without new engine.

May be upgrades after 2017 have made them change ratings. Once SCE-200 and other upgrades are done, GSLV Mk III will be more equal to Japanese H-IIB, ESA Ariane 5G and superior to H-IIA and Zenith-3SL by a good margin.

If GSLV Mk III reaches 8 tonnes GTO and 16 tonnes LEO with SCE-200, it will itself become an almost heavy lift launch vehicle.

Than it should be Mk IV

BENGALURU: India's heaviest rocket is getting ready to make its entry into the global commercial launch service market with the milestone expected on October 22.
In its first dedicated commercial mission, GSLV-Mk III would launch British startup OneWeb's 36 broadband satellites from Sriharikota spaceport, as per a contract signed by Indian Space Research Organisation's commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).
The newest rocket is capable of launching a four tonne class of satellite to Geosynchronous Transfer orbit (GTO).
"The launch is slated shortly after October 21 midnight. We are looking at 00:12 hours on October 22," a senior official of the national space agency told PTI on condition of anonymity on Thursday.
"Undertaking the launch of 36 OneWeb satellites on-board GSLV-Mk III from India is a historic moment for NSIL and ISRO," NSIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Radhakrishnan D was quoted as saying earlier.
GSLV-Mk III, also referred to as Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3), is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-on, a liquid propellant core stage and a cryogenic stage. India's Bharti Enterprises is a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb.
NSIL, a Central public sector enterprise under the Department of Space, said the contract with OneWeb is a historic milestone for NSIL and ISRO, as LVM3, is making its entry into the global commercial launch service market.
In an October 4 update on the mission, NSIL said two solid strap-on boosters and liquid core stage of LVM3 have been fully integrated at the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, in Sriharikota.
"Integration of 36 OneWeb (Low Earth Orbit broadband communication) satellites after successful completion of health checks have been assembled with the dispenser unit," NSIL said.
"In the coming days integration of (the) cryogenic upper stage of the launch vehicle and integration of payload fairing with 36 satellites will take place," NSIL had added.

LVM3 M2 / OneWeb India-1 Mission
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a CPSE under the Department of Space and the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has signed two launch service contracts with M/s Network Access Associated Limited (M/s OneWeb), United Kingdom, for launching OneWeb LEO Broadband Communication Satellites on-board ISRO’s heaviest launcher LVM3.
It is first LVM3 dedicated commercial launch on demand through NSIL. This contract with M/s OneWeb is a historic milestone for NSIL and ISRO, as LVM3, is making its entry into the Global commercial launch service market.
OneWeb is a global communications network, powered from space, enabling connectivity for governments, businesses, and communities. It is implementing a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites.India’s Bharti serves as a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb.
As part of the Contract, 36 satellites will be placed into orbit by one LVM3, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
Mission Update: 04-10-2022
Two solid strap-on boosters and a liquid core stage of LVM3 have been fullyintegrated at the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR. Integration of 36 OneWeb satellites after successful completion of health checks have been assembled with the dispenser unit. In the coming days, the integration of the cryogenic upper stage of the launch vehicle and the integration of payload fairing with 36 satellites will take place. Based on the success-oriented schedule for the remaining activities, the launch is nominally envisaged during the 3rd / 4th week of October 2022.

OneWeb Fairing.jpg

Exciting news from India as we confirm the encapsulation of our 36 satellites ahead of #OneWebLaunch14. The satellites have now travelled to be attached to the LVM3 rocket ahead of launch later this month.

Thanks again to our team, as well as @isro, @NSIL_India and @Arianespace!
