ATLIXCO, Pue. For 17 years, Avipro Manufacturers S.A. de C.V. has produced the fuselage of more than 200 light aircraft that have already flown in nine countries around the world, but the lack of a specific regulation for experimental aviation has prevented their take-off in Mexico.

In the year 2000, in a small industrial warehouse in this municipality, the same one in which another emblematic Atlixco business was born years before, “Italian Coffee”, two good friends who were passionate about mechanics and aviation -one from Puebla and one from the United States- opened the first company. aeronautics of the country.

The first Bearhawk light aircraft, whose fuselage was produced by the firm, took flight in 2002, after two years of specialized training for its workers. To date these “Made in Mexico” aircraft have reached nine countries: Germany, Australia, Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, Ecuador, the United States, New Zealand and South Africa.

At Avipro Manufacturers S.A. de C.V. nothing is mass-produced because each piece is marked, cut and filed manually, then bent and riveted with rustic instruments, just as planes were made 100 years ago, explains the general manager.



This precisely, he adds, is the main attraction for his customers, aeronautical enthusiasts mainly from the United States and other countries around the world.
That is the secret, the success of our planes because Americans and many people like to build their own planes, they take it as therapy or as a challenge ”, he emphasizes.

And he maintains that despite its production method, of one unit per month, the Bearhawk aircraft of Avipro Manufacturers S.A. de C.V. they are as safe as any commercial aircraft.

Proof of this, he emphasizes, is that he has passed all the exams made by the aeronautical authorities of the nine nations in which they have already been commercialized.

For the construction of the Bearhawk airplanes, customers buy the kit with the 49 percent engine, as the rest, assembling the fuselage, installing the engine, control systems, seats and details, are their responsibility.

"Because to be an experimental aircraft, the customer has to do 51 percent, minimum," he says.

WITH THE LAW AS AN OBSTACLE
17 years ago, Mr. Ángel Limón García, the mechanic from Alicante, founder of Avipro Manufacturers S.A. de C.V., he dreamed that the aircraft of his company would reach the whole world, however, he died two years ago without realizing his illusion.

Luis and Agustín, his children, have maintained their father's inheritance, however they explain, they have not been able to crystallize their father's desire to make Avipro Manufacturers S.A. de C.V. an aeronautical factory, but they have had to settle for it being a maquiladora company for airframes and parts for airplanes.

MEXICO CITY (01/17/2022).- After the Mexican aerospace industry registered a decrease of 31.8% in 2020 compared to the previous year, going from 9,600 million dollars in exports in 2019 to 6,600 million dollars in 2020, closes 2021 with "a slight rebound that we consider marginal, in one digit, which will be around 5%" and for 2022 and 2023 "a much more important rebound is expected, (...) in such a way that in 2024 we will return to the volumes that we were before the pandemic, ”said the executive president of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (FEMIA), Luis Lizcano.

In an interview with Vanguardia Industrial, he highlighted that this 2022 “we see quite promising. We hope that we will return to double-digit growth rates as it was before the pandemic (of Covid-19), we even hope that in 2022, this will be a year where we have growth above the average growth that we had which was 14%, we are estimating a 16% growth, so we see it very promising”, although he accepted that “everything will depend on how the world issues that affect the industry develop” and “what the evolution is of the variants of the pandemic.

After mentioning that beyond the fact that the strong states in the aerospace industry are "Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, on the border issue, and the area of influence of Querétaro and Bajío, it is also taking on a new role ”, the director acknowledged that there are “states like Yucatán that are making an important effort to establish the sector in their region”, as well as “Mexico City itself, (and) the State of Mexico”, “where there is a important effort on the part of the community, not just the government, but the community to establish (...) operations in this or another sector,” he said.

He also referred to one of the most recent investments in the industry in Mexico: that of Grupo Safran, "which is the main employer in the aerospace industry in Mexico, where they have just opened an operation to supply or manufacture all cabin interiors." in the city of Chihuahua for the 737 MAX”.



Beyond this investment, Lizcano mentioned "other opportunities and there are other things, in which we must be attentive: one of them is Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), where for example there is an important trend to change aircraft from passengers to cargo, (...) precisely, derived from the pandemic ”.

In this regard, he specified that on this issue, the issue of "proximities and logistics issues are also important in this and North America is one of the main commercial aviation markets and without a doubt some opportunities arise in a sector that right now more or less occupies from ten to 12% of the activity of the aerospace sector in Mexico”.

Although he commented that they do not have a projection in numbers as such regarding the area of opportunity in MRO in Mexico, the director of FEMIA assured that "we know that the projection is important, firstly because of the tendency to change from passenger to cargo aircraft and second for the suburban issue and the logistics issue. Embraer and Aernnova announce strategic partnership in Évora
Aernnova acquires Embraer's industrial units in Évora (Portugal) and signs a long-term commercial agreement with the Brazilian company

Embraer and Aernnova, an international reference in the supply of aerostructures, today announced a strategic partnership for the industrial units Embraer Metálicas and Embraer Compósitos, located in the Aeronautical Industrial Park of Évora, in Portugal.

The agreement contemplates the sale of all shares of said subsidiaries of Embraer to Aernnova, for the amount of US$ 172 million, subject to adjustments until the closing date.

The agreement aims to increase the production capacity of the centers of excellence, whose operation is of strategic importance for Embraer's current and future products. With 37,100 and 31,800 square meters, respectively, and employing around 500 people, the facilities combine the most advanced technologies in the manufacture of metallic and composite aerostructures with a high level of digitalization and automation of production processes.

The two plants produce, among others, components for wings and vertical and horizontal stabilizers for Embraer's aeronautical programs, such as the Praetor 500 and Praetor 600 executive jets, the two generations of the E-Jets family of commercial jets and the KC- 390 Millennium.

The industrial units in Évora will be Aernnova's largest production centers in the world. With the new terms of the partnership, Aernnova assumes the operation of the industrial plants in Évora and, at the same time, ensures the supply for current production of Embraer aircraft, increasing Aernnova's long-term revenue forecast.

The agreement reinforces Aernnova's position as a premier supplier for single-aisle aircraft, advancing the company's position in the defense and business aircraft markets. Activities at the Évora industrial facilities will add approximately US$170 million in revenue for Aernnova.


The capacity of the industrial units in Évora will also allow the signing of new contracts, either with Embraer or with other manufacturers. “We are pleased to announce this partnership with Aernnova, a world-renowned supplier of aerostructures. The agreement will allow the expansion of occupancy levels at the plants in Évora and the diversification of the customer base, bringing new business opportunities”, says Francisco Gomes Neto, President and CEO of Embraer.

"This agreement is an important step in our asset optimization strategy, which aims to maximize the use of our units and improve the company's profitability."

Ricardo Chocarro, CEO of Aernnova, says that “the agreement is another step in Aernnova's growth strategy, which further reinforces the company's status as a global leader in the design and production of aerostructures. We plan to further advance the operations of the facilities and establish Évora as a model in the manufacture of aerostructures, with the technical and commercial support of the Aernnova Group – which has a lasting commitment to the development of a more sustainable and digital aeronautical industry”.

With this strategic move, Embraer reinforces and consolidates its commitment to Portugal, the country where the company invests the most in industrial capacity, outside Brazil, and which has a strategic location for its presence in Europe. Completion of the transaction is subject to a set of conditions that the parties involved expect to meet in the first quarter of 2022.

The FAB (Brazilian Air Force) wants to buy another 30 Gripen fighters, almost doubling the fleet of 36 that are gradually arriving in the country. Meanwhile, the FAB began to assemble the most modern and expensive arsenal of missiles that Brazil has ever had to equip the plane.

"Capacity-based planning takes us today, based on our employment assumptions, to 66 planes," Force commander Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior told Folha.

The redesign reduces speculation of an ideal fleet of more than 120 aircraft, made since Brazil began discussing the acquisition of a new fighter in 2001.

"How to get there [the 66], we have discussed, we are in the initial phase. It has an intention", says the brigadier, aware of the budgetary difficulties inherent in the military area - the contract for the purchase of KC-390 freighters from Embraer, for example , is being renegotiated and should include perhaps half of the original order for 28 aircraft.

The Gripen, manufactured by Sweden's Saab in a program that aims to train national production at Embraer, was purchased for the equivalent today of R$22.6 billion in 2014.

It is not an acquisition of a finished product, but a technology transfer program, so much so that the two-seater model is being designed jointly by Brazilians and Swedes.

One plane has been in Brazil since 2020 for the testing campaign, and four will arrive this semester to start the so-called military certification. It will be made in Sweden and ratified in Brazil, and the FAB wants to have a total of six planes by the end of the year.



Baptista Junior believes that the process will take about six months. He dismissed the rumors in the market that the FAB would be interested in another vector for its combat aviation, the American with stealth technology F-35. "This is delusion," he said.

This idea came from the recent defeat of the Gripen in a competition in Finland, for the F-35, which, as it began to overcome the high cost problems that plagued it, came to be seen as an alternative in the market.

The Swedish fighter faces several disputes, such as in Austria, Canada and, most importantly for a plane that could be assembled in Brazil, Colombia. Baptista Junior relativizes the concern with the fact that this Gripen model, the E/F generation, was only purchased by the FAB (36 planes) and Sweden (60).

"It's a very off-the-shelf aircraft [English for 'straight from the shelf', in the jargon that indicates that its components can be purchased in several places]. We suffered with the [Italian-Brazilian attack plane] AMX, because many things were done for him they only existed here and in Italy", he says.

"I believe it will be a victorious aircraft, it's even unfair to call it fourth generation, its software architecture is something incredible", said the military man, who agrees that "we will have to pay to maintain it, control obsolescence".

This is a risk inherent in the "make it" option when the FAB found itself between "buy or make" when choosing its multi-role fighter, which aims to replace the current F-5 and AMX. The advantage is industrial capacity building.

"The idea was that Embraer could make a fifth-generation aircraft. Today, I don't know if doing it alone, difficult with this cost, but with partnerships", he says.

A different path was taken to arm the Gripen. Over the years, the FAB has promoted projects to build missiles with local manufacturers, but now the option has been to "buy".


The FAB's new generation of armaments was traded within Gripen's budget, with some items to be funded by the Treasury.

On November 24, the Force received its first batch for operational use of the Meteor missile, from the European consortium MBDA, after having one for testing with the Gripen that is in Brazil.

It is a BVR (beyond visual range) missile. That is, the pilot shoots it at a distance that can vary from 100 km to 200 km from his target, and may or may not update his route via digital connection on the way, leaving very little reaction time for the opponent.

The Meteor is considered the most advanced model of its kind on the market. It combines a solid fuel propulsion stage that is replaced by a ramjet-type engine, which feeds on air ahead to generate speeds up to four times faster than sound (4,900 km/h).

It's a very expensive weapon. The FAB does not disclose how many missiles it received, nor the value – which varies and depends on the scope of the purchase and, of course, the installment within the 25-year financing of the Swedish government.


But, according to the annual table of arms transfers from the Sipri benchmark (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), the deal was €200 million (about R$1.2 billion today) for a total of 100 units. This is in line with the quoted market price for the Meteor, €2 million a piece.

Boeing Aircraft Parts to Be Manufactured in Mexico
In a recent tweet published this week, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrand, the French company SAFRAN will begin the construction of a new plant in Chihuahua will be manufacturing the interior of Boeing passenger aircraft. This announcement was made after Mexico, the United States of America and Canada signed a new International Treaty on July 1.


SAFRAN, the world’s third-largest aerospace provider, has been operating in Mexico for over 25 years, primarily in the aerospace markets. According to its website, this French company has two production plants in Querétaro, both SAFRAN centers of excellence: one makes critical parts for the CFM56 and SaM146 engines and the other specializes in landing gear components for Airbus and Boeing airplanes.

In addition, SAFRAN operates the largest aircraft wiring plant in the world, in Chihuahua. When it was inaugurated in 1996, the plant was the first aerospace manufacturing plant in Mexico. Today, it comprises four production units and a wiring system design and engineering center. The site designs and produces 95% of the wiring used on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and produces 75% of the wiring on the Airbus A380, the world’s biggest jetliner.

With extensive operations in the Mexican aerospace market, SAFRAN is a leading partner for the country’s airlines. The CFM56 engine developed and produced by CFM International, the 50/50 joint company between SAFRAN Aircraft Engines and General Electric (GE), powers more than 120 single-aisle commercial jets for Aeromexico and Interjet.

Since 2016, SAFRAN dedicated to composite parts for the LEAP jet engine in Mexico. The LEAP engine – the successor to the CFM56 – has already been chosen to power Aeromexico’s 90-strong fleet of Boeing 737 MAX airliners and the 40 Airbus A320neo airliners ordered by Interjet. SAFRAN also operates in the regional aviation market, as the supplier of the SaM146 engine (through PowerJet, a 50/50 joint company between Safran Aircraft Engines and UEC Saturn) and nacelles for the fleet of 30 Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jets ordered by Interjet.

SAFRAN operates three maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centers in Querétaro. These state-of-the-art facilities provide a complete range of support services for aircraft engines, landing gear and hydraulic systems.

According to Mr. Ebrand, the construction of this new plant will generate 800 jobs, which is positive after the French company laid off 3,000 workers in May due to falling demand from the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, SAFRAN is Mexico’s largest employer in the aerospace industry, with around 10,000 employees at production, maintenance and engineering.

The new facilities address the growth of ITP Aero’s Externals business area, in parallel to the construction of its new plant in Derio, Spain.

The Governor of the State of Querétaro, Francisco Domínguez Servién and the Managing Director of ITP Aero, Carlos Alzola, have today inaugurated the new facilities of the company in Querétaro (Mexico), which meet the growing needs of its Externals business area- pipes and fittings required for aircraft engine systems. This extension takes place in parallel with the construction of a new Externals plant in Derio (Bizkaia, Spain) which will be inaugurated in the second half of 2019.
The new Querétaro facilities will be used to design and produce two types of Externals: pipes and end-fittings - components used to join pipes. This upgrade includes the redesign of the shop floor area, increased production flow and more office space for new hires. In addition, the new facilities will contribute to increasing the technological capabilities of ITP Aero in Querétaro.
The increase in activity that this investment entails will result in 40 new jobs to be created during 2019. Moreover, pipe production is expected to increase by 9%, up to 327,000 pipes in 2020, as well as reaching 230.000 end-fittings in 2020.
Carlos Alzola, Managing Director of ITP Aero, commented: "The expansion works carried out are in line with the growth plans outlined in the ITP 2020 Strategic Plan, which includes intensifying industrial investments and responding to the growth forecasts of the global aeronautical industry. A company is being developed in Mexico that will manufacture aircraft parts with large-scale 3D printing. The goal is to ensure that, in a few years, aircraft models from brands such as Boeing, Bombardier or Airbus have parts manufactured through 100% Mexican capital additive manufacturing.

Additive manufacturing creates products using manufacturing technologies by adding materials and not by subtracting them. Metal cutting is not required, for example, because instead of sheets to cut and personalize, steel powder is used to develop objects. The consulting firm Deloitte, in its study The Future of Manufacturing, explains that the price of additive manufacturing is falling globally due to the differences with conventional manufacturing of fixed versus variable costs.

With the laying of the first stone of the Horizontec company, the aerospace industry of Guanajuato continues to consolidate, said the Governor of the State, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo.

He highlighted that parts and components for Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Gulfstream are produced in Guanajuato. Horizontec begins construction of its aircraft factory in Guanajuato

With an investment of 10 million dollars and the generation of 140 specialized jobs, the Mexican company Horizontec laid the first stone of its plant for manufacturing and assembling Halcón 1 and 2 aircraft, which can be used for recreational purposes, aeronautical schools, training of pilots and for security monitoring from the air.

The plant will be located at the Celaya Airport and its runways will be used for testing.

In this regard, Giovanni Angelucci, general director of Horizontec, stated that with this plant, Guanajuato adds one more tool towards the generation of technology and equipment for the aeronautical industry, since it will serve as a platform for Mentoring focused on this sector.

"We will be focused on solving problems through specialized minds, we will create business opportunities for the region and the country and we are committed to generating talent through professionalization," he added.

He said that in this creative space of 1,930 square meters, more projects that they have in mind will be followed up once the plant is consolidated, since there is the possibility of manufacturing the tandem and five-seater aircraft in the future.

For his part, Óscar Rodríguez, president of the Bajío Aerospace Cluster, recognized the sum of efforts that made possible the construction of an aircraft assembly plant manufactured in Guanajuato, as he reiterated that it is a high-impact project that promotes the pillars of industry 4.0.

"All this adds value to everything that is produced in Guanajuato in the aeronautical sector, the mix of technologies increases results and generates these knowledge ecosystems such as Horizontec," he commented.

The event was attended by companies that supply the aeronautical sector in the region, as well as representatives from academia, government and various business chambers.

Embraer informs that it has reached an agreement with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) regarding the contractual discussion of the order of KC-390 multi-mission aircraft.

Thus, the total number of aircraft to be acquired by the FAB will be reduced from 28 to 22 units, with deliveries expected until 2034.

The new production rate is in line with FAB's budgetary conditions while allowing Embraer to better plan for the long term with its suppliers.

The benefits of the KC-390 program are not limited to operational gains for the entire national defense system, but also represent an important increase in exports of high value-added products, contributing to the country's trade balance - the aircraft has already been ordered by Portugal and Hungary, two nations that are part of NATO.

The KC-390 is capable of performing a variety of missions, including humanitarian support, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, carrying and dropping cargo and troops, and in-flight refueling.

With unique innovations in its category, the aircraft has been successfully used in FAB humanitarian missions both in Brazil, in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, and abroad, in support of disasters in Lebanon and Haiti.

With this agreement, Embraer reinforces its role as a strategic partner of the FAB in the development and implementation of high value-added technological solutions and products.

Juan Manuel Papiz presented a turboprop engine at the INNOVAR 2017 contest held at Tecnópolis Buenos Aires. The engine is designed for aircraft with 4 to 6 passengers.

The technician and inventor from Concepción currently resides in Cruz Alta in Córdoba and presented the "Prometheus" engine for aircraft with between 4 and 6 passengers, fully developed and manufactured by himself.

By Editorial Office/CORREO.- With an investment of more than 200 million dollars, the Mexican-German company AT Engine inaugurates its first plant in Hermosillo where it will produce new turbine parts for next-generation aircraft.

The plant is located in the Hermosillo Norte industrial park, it will create 400 new jobs and places Sonora at a new level in the aerospace industry.

In November 2017, Altaser Aerospace, a Mexican company integrated into Grupo Punto Alto (GPA) from Chihuahua, signed an agreement with the German company Aerotech to create AT Engine and this Sunday (yesterday), the company opened its first plant.

Claudia Pavlovich Arellano, Governor of the State, inaugurated the facilities and said that the entity continues to grow with the arrival of foreign companies with large investments, the only way to combat poverty and inequality, creating sources of well-paid employment.
