Currently, Mexico, due to its proximity to the United States, is the country that has the main brands of desktop and professional 3D printers, followed by Brazil and Colombia. In these three countries, companies such as HP, 3D Systems, Big Rep, Desktop Metal stand out, as well as renowned desktop machines such as Ultimaker and Formlabs. There are also local manufacturers, such as Colibrí 3D in Mexico, or makeR in Colombia. One of the countries that has attracted our attention the most due to the number of machine manufacturers that currently exist is Argentina, which has names like Trideo or Smart 3D that are already making an international leap.

Mexico reaches ninth place in installing industrial robots
The presence of robots in Mexico is higher than what is perceived. In fact, Mexico is ranked number 9 of the 15 countries with the most industrial robot installations per year, according to the World Robotics 2020 report, from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The country is an important emerging market for industrial robots, although its installations decreased 20 percent, to 4,562 units in 2019. Its highest peak was reached in 2017 with 6,356 units, the report says. In the T-MEC area, the value of the installation of industrial robots is 2,200 million dollars. The three countries that comprise it, the United States, Canada and Mexico, represent the second most important global inventory, after China. 13 percent of the machines in operation were installed in North America.

In the manufacturing industry, according to the IFR report, in North America there are on average 153 robots per 10,000 employees. In the United States the average is 228 robots per 10,000 employees, in Canada 165 robots per 10,000 employees and in Mexico only 44 robots per 10,000 employees. In addition, if the automotive industries of Mexico and the United States are compared, the latter has 1,287 robots per 10,000 employees, compared to 356 robots per 10,000 Mexican employees. https://www.milenio.com/negocios/mexico-alcanza-9-instalar-robots-industriales

IPN Lagarto I experts create, the first Mexican computer processor

Development would make it possible to advance in pursuit of a locally sourced CPU
Mexico, DF.- In Mexico, computers or operating systems are not designed, they are all imported. But, the situation is about to change, because engineers from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) developed Lagarto I, the first Mexican computer processor, which will pave the way for the generation of Mexican CPUs.

The problem with computer hardware and software is that no one ensures that they do not contain back doors that allow access to personal or business data. The main quality of the Lagarto I processor designed at the IPN's Center for Computing Research (CIC) is to be totally secure and will prevent the leakage of information.

Project leader Marco Antonio Ramírez Salinas, professor at the CIC, explained that Lagarto I is the first of two embedded processors projected for 2015 and 2016, which for now are used for research and teaching in the master's degree in Computer Engineering Sciences , with the purpose of generating highly specialized human resources and in the long term, these processors are produced.

Lagarto I has a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture based on the MIPS processor with some modifications, it executes a set of 32-bit instructions that operate on 32-bit data.

Lagarto I has been modeled in RTL (Register Transfer Level) using a hardware description language called Verilog, which is used to describe complex digital systems at a high level of abstraction, such as ALUs, (arithmetic logic unit) registers and memories.

1637844077226.png

1637844102318.png

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has coordinated the creation of the first open source chip in Spain. This is Lagarto, a chip built with 65 nanometer transistors, and represents the intention of the center to become "a benchmark in open source hardware technologies developed in Europe."

The development of Lagarto has given superior results than expected. According to Miquel Moretó, project coordinator, “the usual thing is to have to manufacture a chip several times before it works properly. In the case of Lagarto, not only has it worked the first time, but it is also capable of correctly executing numerical calculation applications ”.

“Lagarto - has declared Mateo Valero, director of the BSC - is the first chip with open source ISA developed in Spain and is an embryo of what the BSC intends to be the European processor. The aim of the project was to demonstrate that the BSC, which is firmly committed to the development of a 'made in Europe' processor, is capable of creating these technologies and we have succeeded in doing so ”.

The goal is that "the repertoire of instructions for future processors must be open source to ensure transparency and minimize dependency." ISAs –like the Lagarto chip– constitute “the basic set of machine language instructions that a processor can understand and execute and is, therefore, the meeting point between software and hardware. The fact that they are open tries to avoid the possibility that the chips incorporate back doors or instructions that could be detrimental to the security or the privacy of the users ”.

Lagarto's initial design is from the Mexican IPN Computer Research Center and, based on an initial academic design, a team of 30 researchers from the IPN itself, the BSC, the National Microelectronics Center of the CSIC (CNM) and the Departments of Computer Architecture (DAC) and Electronic Engineering of the UPC have worked about two years to manufacture it.

It should be noted that open source hardware is an innovation that, according to the BSC, “has the potential to be as disruptive as Linux, the paradigm of open source software, was in its day. If Linux succeeded in reducing the dependence of users on the large providers of software and applications, it is envisioned that hardware based on open source ISAs can do the same in its own field ”.

ZR16S08: The first officially recognized Brazilian microcontroller

For the first time, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) recognized a microcontroller as a National Product, the ZR16S08. On February 27th, Ordinance 939 of MCTIC was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, which establishes that the ZR16S08 is a semiconductor electronic component developed in Brazil.
1637907676582.png

Comparison between the size of the ZR16S08 and a coin.
Figure 1: Comparison between the size of the ZR16S08 and a coin.
The developers responsible for this project are from Santa Maria Design House (SMDH), a non-profit Design House linked to Fatec and to the UFSM/GMicro Microelectronics Group, which developed the digital integrated circuits, from Chipus Microeletrônica SA, which developed the circuits and C&P Projetos Eletrônicos LTDA, which developed the architecture.

The ZR16S08 can be used for many applications due to its versatility and easy programming. In addition, it is a great achievement in the field of Brazilian microelectronics, as it is the first microcontroller with a proprietary design and architecture.

For us to be aware of how important this is for Brazil, the ZR16S08, in the short term, can be a substitute for imported chips, in a country that is a large semiconductor importer, with an annual deficit of around US$ 20 billion. Another very important point is that the BNDES has credit lines that prioritize products that use chips known to be national.

In alliance, Intel Mexico and Costa Rica create semiconductors
October 15, 2021 Editorial 0 Comments intel

According to the processor manufacturer, its offices in Guadalajara and Costa Rica are a fundamental part of the semiconductor manufacturing process, and currently have more than 500 open vacancies at both sites.

Semiconductor design and manufacturing is one of the most complex engineering processes ever performed, where hundreds of millions of transistors are packed into surfaces the size of a fingernail. And this component is the fundamental basis of the devices that support the digital world on which we are most dependent today.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, in the world there are more than 100 billion integrated circuits in daily use, and as a result of an exponential increase in the demand for this input, at the beginning of 2021 the world began to hear about its scarcity and the impact it had on various industries.

Therefore, in order to sustain technological demand, as well as to diversify the supply chain, now 80% concentrated in Asia, Intel makes significant investments around the world including $ 20 billion dollars to build two new factories in Arizona and $ 600 million in Costa Rica, among others. All this, to reach the objective of balancing the supply chain by 2030, where at least 50% of the work is carried out in America and Europe, and the other 50% in Asia.

“Our strategy at Intel called IDM 2.0 is a differentiated formula that will deliver a new era of innovation, manufacturing and product leadership through diverse capabilities, including Intel Foundry Services, which will provide advanced US-based manufacturing and packaging capabilities. and Europe, to help our customers turn silicon into solutions, using industry standard design packages, ”said Marcelo Bertolami, Intel's general manager for the Americas territory.

The design and manufacture of these components is one of the most complex engineering processes that humanity performs, explain the spokesmen, which takes up to 20 weeks to complete, along six stages: design, creation of masks, manufacturing, individualization and sorting, testing and assembly, and storage.

In each of these steps, Latin American professionals participate at Intel's facilities in Guadalajara (Mexico) and Costa Rica. Research is one of the phases that takes place before production begins and in which Latin America participates. Here, engineers and scientists from sites like the Intel Guadalajara Design Center (GDC) in Mexico develop technologies that will be used in the semiconductor manufacturing process. For its part, Intel Costa Rica participates in several of these phases, such as the creation of masks that contain the information that will be used for each step of the semiconductor manufacturing process.

Another stage in which Latin America plays a relevant role is in testing and assembly. When the silicon wafers are ready, they are cut into individual chips and placed in reels through the process of individualization and sorting. Once the chips are cut and sorted, they are taken to a testing and assembly plant. Intel Costa Rica is one of the few plants in the world that performs this process, where each chip is assembled in a package that protects it and allows it to connect to other components, so that its functionality is finally tested.

“We proudly join, along with Asia, as the only Intel sites to carry out assembly and testing work at a global level, making Intel Costa Rica the first country in Latin America to carry out this function. In September of this year we started operations in our new plant and today we have the initial capacity to incorporate into production, growing gradually in the remainder of this and the next few years ”, commented Max Ramírez, director of factory and manufacturing operations at Intel Costa Rica.

Finally, the processors are tested one last time before being shipped to consumers. Each of Intel's technologies carries behind a very complex integral process that ensures that the highest quality that characterizes us as a company is met. Validation is one of the critical links in that chain, and the GDC is the only Intel laboratory in all of Latin America that does this task. This center is the largest site with validation activities outside of the US.

“At Intel, we are committed to creating a better world, through the power of our technology and the passion of our employees.

The Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (Cidesi) is home to the recently inaugurated Laboratory for the Manufacture of Microelectromechanical Devices (MEMS), a unique scenario of its kind in Latin America, for the design, development and application of sensors and actuators for sectors such as automotive, health, aeronautics and household appliances, among others. The director of Microtechnologies of Cidesi, Dr. Jesús Israel Mejía Silva, explained that this specialized laboratory responds to the trend and the market of sensorization through MEMS that has occurred in recent years worldwide. “There is a great need to develop sensors and systems that can provide the ability to read and pre-process the signals that are captured. There is a very strong market, mainly for so-called applied sensors that have embedded electronic components so that they deliver preconditioned signals and can be connected directly to other processing systems ”, said Mejía. Our operating platform is the development of sensors, integrated circuits and applications to directly solve industry problems. Jesús Israel Mejía Silva, director of Microtechnologies at Cidesi. Jesús Mejía also specified that to address the challenges that exist in Mexico, the laboratory is already developing projects through the Regional Promotion for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Development (Fordecyt), where the sensorization of the health, automotive, and aeronautical sectors is sought. and household appliances. “Our operating platform is the development of sensors, integrated circuits and applications to directly solve industry problems. The Directorate of Microtechnologies is led by Mexican talent, researchers graduated from institutions such as the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE), the Center for Research in Advanced Materials (Cimav), the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and even from Cidesi itself, where we have the entire supply chain, from scientific development to prototype development, quality study and marketing, through our technology transfer office ", indicated the director of Microtechnologies of Cidesi.
