The myth La leyenda Negra

The concept of the "leyenda negra" gathers together all the accusations against the "Spanish", the subjects of the crowns of Aragon and Castile, that circulated in Europe from the late Middle Ages and also in the New World since the 16th century. The term was created by Julián Juderías in 1913, and other authors developed it further. At that time when Spain seemed to be suffering from internal problems and a collective inferiority complex due to the loss of the last remnants of its empire, the goal was to prove that for centuries domestic and foreign enemies had done everything they could to drag the glorious Spanish past through the mud.

Spain and Portugal have lost relevance in geopolitics long ago.

Latin America doesn't hold any baggage anymore except lingual and cultural norms due to colonial history.
Spain is not important?
The aerospace and defense industry is a strategic sector for the Spanish economy, since:

  • It creates high-quality employment
  • Accounts for 1% of total Spanish GDP and 7.3% of the Spanish Industrial Production Index.
  • It is key for the foreign sector. In 2019, 71% of sales were from exports.
  • It is geared to RDI (the results of research in this sector are also often used in other industries)
The Spanish aeronautics industry is a world leader in many fields, including composite materials for aircraft structures, low-pressure turbines, air traffic management systems and military transport aircraft.

Spain's HDI value for 2019 is 0.904— which put the country in the very high human development category— positioning it at 25 out of 189 countries and territories. Between 1990 and 2019, Spain's HDI value increased from 0.761 to 0.904, an increase of 18.8 percent.

S-80, a latest generation´s submarine

State-of-the-art conventional ocean-going submarine designed and built entirely in Spain. One of its outstanding features is its third-generation air-independent propulsion system (AIP) known as BEST (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology), which consists of a bioethanol reformer to produce hydrogen, which in turn reacts with oxygen in a fuel cell generating electricity. This system enables the vessel to extend its endurance, operating independently under water for up to three weeks, which considerably reduces its level of detectability.
It is a highly automated submarine that thanks to the state-of-the-art platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas, allows it to be operated by a limited number of crew members (32 sailors and 8 berths for additionally embarked personnel), which can reach an underwater speed of more than 19 knots, and a maximum depth capacity of over 300 m. It is approximately 80 m long, 7 m in diameter, has a submerged displacement of 3,000 tonnes.
It also features a combat system developed by Navantia Sistemas in collaboration with the US firm Lockheed Martin, with capacity, unique (for NATO and EU) amongst conventional submarines of similar characteristics, to launch land attack tactical missiles.

Australia: Adelaide, Canberra and 12 landing craft

Next to the Sydney Bay is found Garden Island, HMAS Canberra and the HMAS Adelaide base, flagship vessels of the Australian fleet that were built by Navantia in the Ría de Ferrol with Spanish design and technology, and completed their construction and testing in Melbourne shipyard . Both ships have already successfully operated in numerous missions. The first of them, the Canberra, was launched in February 2011 and delivered in November 2014.
In addition, 12 landing boats operating on these ships, and which endow them with their amphibious capacity were also built in Spain, in the Bay of Cádiz.

RUAS-160 is a compact, modular, long range, Rotary-wing Unmanned Aerial System with contra-rotating coaxial rotors.

It is the result of the collaboration between the Argentinian helicopter designer and manufacturer Cicaré SA, the state-owned high-tech company INVAP SE and the agricultural service company Marinelli Technology SA.

One question, why Spain dosen't belong to G7? How mornal Spanish view this? Do they feel they are ignored by mainstream western society?

Spain doesn't have a standing in aerospace against Germany, France or UK or Asian states in most aspects. It's a manufacturer, not a major R&D base building new fighter designs. Obviously, it's developed country with high per person output in tech sector like most former colonial powers (even though Spain and Portugal are weakest among them). But yet, overall technological, economic and military output is midget which won't prolong as Spanish economy has been nosediving and unrests are rising. Spain is indeed an underdog in European and global politics.

We don't see Spain testing and deploying giant strategic weapons, testing nukes, sending rockets in space, planets or building space stations or bullying around anyone with its military might or economic prowess. Spain's era is just no more.

Yes, i think it's pretty accurate, now it's a peaceful nation with nothing happens there.
When i was in Nordic nations, i only see agriculture products from Spain. In 2020, the S.Korea officiallky surpassed Spain on per GDP.
