TP (Industria de Turbo Propulsores, S.A.): advanced technology in aeronautical propulsion from Spain

The ITP Group is a leader in engineering, research and development, manufacturing and foundry, assembly and testing of aeronautical engines and gas turbines. Additionally, it performs online maintenance activities for engines and aircraft, and provides engine leasing and purchase and sale services. It is also the official maintenance service for most of the existing engine manufacturers in the world today, with a capacity to repair more than 400 engines a year.

ITP is Rolls-Royce's risk partner for the design and manufacture of Low Pressure Turbine modules for engines over 35,000 lbf thrust. ITP is participating through risk/reward contracts in the development and manufacture of the TBP modules for the Rolls-Royce Trent-500 engines that power the Airbus A340-500/600 aircraft, Trent-900, one of the options that will power the Airbus A380, and the Trent-1000, an engine option for the Boeing 7E7 aircraft.

The company has 11 production centers in Spain, Great Britain, Mexico and the USA and a workforce of more than 2,200 workers.

ITP has the following quality accreditations:AQAP7PECAL110, ISO9001:2000, ISO14001, EN/AS9100, JAR145, ISO17025(ENAC), OSHAS 18001, EMAS II, JAR21D DOA Subpart JB, JAR21 POA, NADCAP and Coatings. Likewise, it has quality certifications from clients such as Rolls-Royce (GB), Rolls-Royce Deutchland, Rolls-Royce Corporation (USA), Snecma (F), Honeywell Engines and Systems (USA), Turbomeca (F), General Electric Aircraft Engines (USA), Pratt & Whitney (USA), BAe Systems (UK).

Additionally, it has obtained the Basque Award for management quality - Gold Q, Rolls-Royce Quality Award and the Principe Felipe Award for Industrial Quality.

Product:
Design and manufacture of low pressure turbines for aeronautical engines with more than 35,000 pounds of thrust

The Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) has the mission of obtaining power in the most efficient way to drag the fan that propels the plane. The TBP module is a complete and independent product within the gas turbines.

ITP is responsible for the design and manufacture of the TBP module of the Trent-500 Enhanced engine that exclusively powers the Airbus A340-500 and A340-600 aircraft and whose engine has been bench certified for 60,000 pounds of thrust.
1643464874904.png

The company is also developing the turbine for the Trent-900 engine, which consists of five stages, despite the notable increase in the size of the fan. Compared to the Trent-500, it has the advantage of setting the benchmark with the most advanced engine on the market, but also of illustrating the differences between the two engines, especially in terms of TBP and fan.

Likewise, the development of the TBP of the Trent-1000 engine that will propel the 7E7 stands out. In relation to those of the Trent-900 engine still under development, the acquisition cost is expected to be reduced by 25%, the design time reduced by 20%, the weight reduced by 25% and the noise levels corresponding to -3 dB.

In addition, Boeing's need to recover the market that Airbus has taken away from it requires that in 2008 the B7E7 engine have these same requirements in service (and not just experimentally demonstrated), to which should be added the reduction in length of the turbine by 20%, improving efficiency to reach values above 92%, and NOx, HC and CO emissions according to ACARE requirements.

Other products:

Design and manufacture of low pressure turbines for aeronautical engines with less than 10,000 pounds of thrust. ITP has partnered with Honeywell for the design, development, manufacture and after-sales service of a TBP for a family of engines whose takeoff thrust is between 5,000 and 9,000 lbf, and whose most important characteristic is to provide an operating cost reduced without penalizing the rest of the parameters, such as weight and efficiency, which continue to be of vital importance to the customer.
1643464734441.png

Design and manufacture of power turbines for turboprop engines. ITP is designing and manufacturing the power turbine for the 11,000 hp TP400-D6 engine that will power the European Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.
o Design and manufacture of the TBP (Low Pressure Turbine) of the ANTLE European program.

8 technologies that were born in Brazil
08/23/2011 at 16:46

1) Radio transmission: the pioneer priest
When we think of advances in science, we immediately imagine modernity, revolutionary devices and recent discoveries. But Brazil was already an exponent in the area for a long time, as in the case of the gaucho priest Roberto Landell de Moura, who is one of those responsible for the invention of the radio.

That's right: in 1900, the Brazilian made the first transmission of voice through a machine without the help of wires, using electromagnetic waves and sound modulation. The technique was being tried by scientists all over the world, but it was Landell who was the first to succeed.

Unfortunately, the Brazilian government did not help him to continue the project and only some of his patents were recognized here and in the United States – unlike the Italian Marconi, considered worldwide as the inventor of the radio, who was duly financed and developed the technology once and for all. .
1644639624060.png

5) BINA: who is calling me?
Every time your phone rings and a small device tells you the number of the person making the call, thank Nélio Nicolai, an electrical technician from Minas Gerais, inventor of BINA, the popular caller ID.

Used worldwide, the device is capable of tracking who is making the call by identifying signals and frequency modulations. Designed and patented in 1977, but released only five years later, BINA means that “B (the receiver) identifies the number of A (the caller)”.

1644639705006.png

Still in the 1980s, Nicolai received international recognition for his invention. Then he got into a controversy over copyright with Brazilian operators, who sold his device without proper authorization.
1644639786330.png

6) Walkman: portable sound is our thing
Sony's portable device, which revolutionized the music industry by giving people the freedom to listen to whatever they want with a device that can be carried in your pocket, has its origins in Brazilian lands. Born in Germany and raised in Brazil, Andreas Pavel developed in 1972 the first portable audio stereo player (using the late cassette tapes), under the name of stereobelt.
He even registered the patents in several countries, but Sony started production of his product years later without proper authorization or making payments to Pavel. It wasn't until the 2000s, after much pressure on the company, that royalties were finally awarded to the device's legitimate inventor.
1644639871076.png

7) Typewriter
With the typewriter, more or less the same thing happened. Father Francisco João de Azevedo, in 1861, built a device with 14 keys, between orthographic signs and letters. It looked like a piano and even had a pedal to change the paper line. Francisco even won a medal of recognition in an event that was even attended by the Emperor Dom Pedro II.
That's where the legends begin. It seems that the government did not let Francisco take the invention to an exhibition in London due to lack of space. And it also seems that his invention or his idea was stolen by a foreign investor, who took the project to the United States. There, Christopher Sholes launched the typewriter patented and marketed in 1867. It is worth remembering that the first patent for a device considered the father of the typewriter came much earlier: it belongs to Henry Mill, in 1771.
1644639957981.png

8) Self-propelled plane
And of course there is the most controversial confusion among Brazilian inventions. After all, who is the inventor of the airplane? The Wright brothers, who are Americans, made a flight of a heavier-than-air craft in 1903. But their invention needed to go up with the help of a “shot” with rails and a catapult. Santos Dumont, in an experiment in Paris for three years, the first public flight of a machine with its own propulsion, that is, that climbed alone.
Both sides have their merits, and you choose which one to consider the real inventor. The fact that it is our Santos Dumont was revolutionary in this and in many other things, but it is so new that it would be worth a video just to talk about it.

Altaser Aerospace is a young company from the state of Chihuahua that has become a supplier for Honeywell and General Electric with complex machined parts for turbines. Investing in the long term and with patience, on the way he saw the opportunity to partner with a German aeronautical group to create a new company, AT Engine

How did Altaser Aerospace become a certified supplier to Honeywell Aerospace and GE Aviation?
We developed a quality system. In May, 2012, we became AS 9100 certified. Our first order for airplane engine parts was for “pre-machined,” parts with a dimension close to the end one, for Honeywell Aerospace. General Electric (GE) found us in an aerospace fair organized by the government of the sate of Sonora, in which Rolls-Royce was the operational client, and which was not interested in us

Could you tell us what expectations you share with AT Engine México in terms of market share and job creation?
At the beginning, General Electric offered us all LEAP turbine spare parts. Now, it wants us to manufacture new turbine parts because Airbus wants more engines now that its other supplier, Pratt and Whitney, could not provide what it promised. This new contract is a bit longer than the expected lifespan of the LEAP turbine (30 or 40 years). We hope it will be a job that will give us 30 years of production with the same engine, with a natural access to renovation, because it will give us the experience, the plant, and the equipment to win the next tender. Regarding jobs, the plant that AT Engine has built in Hermosillo will have approximately 400 employees.

The Spanish company PLD Space, based in Teruel, has presented the Miura 1 suborbital rocket in Madrid, which it plans to launch from Huelva in the last quarter of 2022 to become the first European reusable launcher. The launcher, presented for the first time fully assembled, has yet to pass the system qualification phase and the combined test of the same in the coming months. Precisely these first tests before its launch will be carried out at Teruel's capital airport, which has a special runway for this type of test in which studies have already been carried out previously.

Spain is rushing to become an international benchmark in space transportation. The company PLD Space from Elche presented this Friday Miura 1, the first space rocket capable of putting satellites weighing up to 100 kilos into orbit. This vehicle, whose launch is scheduled for the second half of 2022, is the predecessor of Miura 5, a more advanced model that is expected to tackle its first mission in 2024, and that will be able to carry a load five times greater. With these two projects, Spain will enter the small group of countries in a position to send small satellites into space, essential for key sectors such as telecommunications, defense and scientific research.

The Miura 1, around 12 meters high and weighing 2,550 kilos, will be on display until Sunday at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, where it can be seen for free. After passing through the capital, the ship will return to the Teruel airport test bench to carry out the combined qualification tests, and then move to the El Arenosillo de Huelva Experimentation Center, where it will undergo compatibility tests with all the ground infrastructure

IMPSA's 200th turbine will go to Yacyretá
This is the first of the 20 turbines that have to be replaced at the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant. It was designed and manufactured by IMPSA in Mendoza and will enable 270,000 families to have electricity. It will be moved in 10 trucks for 15 days.
IMPSA, through its company Transapelt, will carry out the transfer and delivery of the Kaplan turbine from its Technological Development Center, located in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza, to the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant, in Ituizangó, Corrientes.

The operation will begin on October 5 at 07:00 a.m. and will last 15 days, given that, as they are oversized and extra heavy loads, they must circulate during the day. It will cross the provinces of Mendoza, San Luis, La Rioja, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero, Chaco and Corrientes.

With this turbine begins the repowering of the Yacyretá Binational Hydroelectric Dam, where the 20 turbines that currently make up the Power Plant have to be replaced due to an original design problem from the German supplier. IMPSA, in a consortium with CIE of Paraguay, is in charge of the design and manufacture of the first six replacement turbines.

The turbine was designed with the highest technology and artificial intelligence programs developed by IMPSA engineers. This has enabled more efficient turbines that generate more energy for the same amount of water and are cheaper than those of their European competitors.

The magic of your chip begins in Mexico
Mexico is one of the key countries for the design and development of semiconductors, so the investment and search for talent is on the rise.

Tue 12 July 2022 01:00 PM

guadalajara design center mexico exports technology
The Guadalajara Design Center began operations in October of
GDL, Jalisco. A small Silicon Valley is being born in Mexico. At least, that is the intention of Intel's Guadalajara Design Center (GDC). Located in the El Bajío neighborhood in Zapopan, Jalisco, this campus that was born as a Mexican startup in 2000 is now one of the most relevant technological centers for the brand, since the process to research, design and test the products is carried out here. Intel chip.

The center has two office buildings and one laboratory building called Intel Labs, but the latter covers 5,000 m2. It is here that 30 research scientists work on developing Artificial Intelligence and robotics prototypes, the architecture and design of computers and other silicon prototypes and systems.

"We see the future full of opportunities, but it all starts with talent," says Jesús Palomino, general director of Intel GDC. In this center there are 1,900 employees, of which 24% have a master's degree, 4% have a doctorate and 130 are students. And they are looking for more.

The landscape in Mexico
In 2018, Mexico contributed 11.6% of the global supply of semiconductors with an export value of 721 million pesos. They export 88% to the United States and this is because one of its main attractions is its proximity to the industry.

In addition, according to the Institute of Statistical and Geographical Information of Jalisco, the main export subsector of Jalisco is "Manufacture of computer equipment, communication, measurement and other electronic equipment, components and accessories" with an export value of 3,092 million dollars, which represents 54.70% of the entity's total exports in the fourth quarter of 2020.

This puts it above the export of tequila, since the beverage and tobacco industry only represents a value of 572 million dollars and 10.13% of the total exports of the state.

In addition, the industry has 3.1 million workers, which represents 18% of the country's formal employment spread over 6,500 companies in 19 states of the Republic.

For this reason, the search and development of Mexican talent is essential for centers such as the GDC. "We see the future full of opportunities, but everything starts with talent," says Jesús Palomino.

On the other hand, Adriana Palau, director of engineering at Intel GDC, highlights that only 30% of women enter to study a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) career, but of that percentage only 10% graduate and attrition continues to decline in the world of work.

“We want more girls for various reasons, but one of them is because women are 50% of the consumer population. It is necessary to have women in companies to provide solutions and the vision of women”, concludes Palau.

The relevance of semiconductors
Semiconductors are extremely important because they are the essential technology for the operation of all modern devices. They serve to be able to turn on your phone even to have connectivity or a cloud.

In 2020, an investment of 440,000 million dollars was made in the industry worldwide and by 2022 the figure is forecast to reach 600,000 million dollars. For this reason, promoting technological talent in Mexico is key for the semiconductor industry because the journey to make a chip begins with research, which is carried out at the GDC, which was also Intel's first acquisition in Latin America. .

Hydra Technologies, a Mexican company specialized in the design and manufacture of Unmanned Aerial Systems, or UAVs for its acronym in English, for military, police and civil use, has taken a relevant qualitative leap by presenting its first Tactical artillery UAV, capable of performing ground attacks: the S-45 Baalam.

The model was developed by the Mexican company in collaboration with the Turkish Military Industry (Turkish Defense & Aerospace), whose catalog shows the consolidated development of five advanced unmanned aircraft: Anka, Bayraktar, Karayel, Anka Aksunaur and Bayraktar Akinci. The latter is the armed model that can carry rockets and attack systems weighing 1,350 kilos.
1659773659774.png

The S-45 Baalam from Hydra Technologies is an advanced version of the S-4, widely used by the armed forces, the National Guard, security forces and civil protection agencies that have dedicated the use of these systems to the monitoring and control of pests and fighting forest fires as early warning instruments.

The S-45 Baalam is capable of performing ground attacks by dropping guided munitions and loitering munitions on defined targets. This aircraft has been operated since 2004 without weapons by the Mexican armed forces and by the National Guard (formerly the Federal Police), in missions of strategic surveillance, protection of strategic installations and support in diplomatic events.

The aircraft shown at Farnborough is the first of its kind to be manufactured by Hydra Technologies. The S-45 Baalam can operate day and night, in any weather condition, has an operating radius of up to 120 kilometers, a range of 12 hours of flight, and can take off with a headwind of up to 22 knots ( around 40 kilometers per hour), has a weight of 80 kilograms, can operate on runways between 350 and 500 meters long, its operating ceiling is 17 thousand feet (about 5 thousand meters high), it develops a maximum speed of 85 knots (about 157 kilometers per hour) and its effective and recommended operating ceiling is between 4,000 and 8,000 feet in altitude (up to 2.5 kilometers in height).

Hydra Technologies is a Mexican company based in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and since 2004 it has been working with the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) providing the Mexican Air Force (FAM) with twenty unmanned devices of various models. At the time, it sold UAVs to the Federal Police, material that was later transferred to the National Guard in 2019.

On December 6, FAMAE made a presentation to the Chilean Army of its latest local developments. In this sense, taking as a framework the facilities of the Peldehue Military Field, the demonstration carried out of the new 122mm rocket launcher system mounted on the tower of a Leopard 1V stood out.

This new system developed and built by FAMAE is called the “GDD René Echeverría” Project. It consists of a 122mm rocket launcher mounted on the tower of a Leopard 1V tank of the Chilean Army. Chile is currently undergoing a gradual process of decommissioning its older Leopard armor. This has represented an opportunity for FAMAE to use these armored vehicles as a new platform for the system, giving them a second operational life.

C-390 is an awesome platform. It's modern and offers pretty much everything that today's forces look for. Brazil has offered this to India as well; Let's hope that Indian MoD can agree to it.
