MUMBAI: Infrastructure construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) will design and construct 36 high speed interceptor boats worth Rs 970 crore for the Indian Coast Guard, the company announced in Mumbai on Monday.

The contract, awarded by the defence ministry, is one of the initiatives of the government to strengthen coastal security.

The interceptor boats will have aluminium-alloy hull construction with water jet propulsion to enable quick response, necessary for the intended applications, and shall be also crucial for near shore action.

The boats shall be designed in-house at the L&T's Ship Design Centre, a part of its heavy engineering division, and shall be constructed at its existing shipyard at Hazira (in Gujarat) and the new shipyard coming up at Katupalli near Ennore (in Tamil Nadu).

L&T has already been building special purpose vessels and heavy lift ships for export at its Hazira Yard. It is equipped to construct ships upto 20,000 tonnes.

L&T buoyed by defense order

L&T buoyed by defense order

After starting on a positive note, the Indian stock markets lost some traction during previous two hours of trade. They could not hold on to the opening gains and pared some of it on account of profit booking in realty, auto, telecom and FMCG sectors. Nevertheless, stocks from healthcare, metal, energy and consumer durable sectors are managing to find investors favor.

The BSE-Sensex and the NSE-Nifty are trading higher, up by 52 points and 20 points respectively. The BSE-Midcap and BSE-Smallcap are trading in the positive, up by around 0.43% and 0.75% respectively. The rupee is trading at 45.51 to the dollar.

According to a leading business daily, Indias largest engineering companyL&T has won an order worth Rs 9.8 from the Indian defense ministry. This order will require L&T to design and construct 36 high-speed interceptor boats which will be used by the coast guards for patrolling the high seas. It will build these boats in its shipyards in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu with the expected delivery time of 18-19 months. It may be noted that the company is betting big on the defense sector as a future growth driver.

It may be noted that L&T has been involved in India-Russia project for building the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos and also in construction of a nuclear-powered submarine in association with the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). Given L&Ts experience of working with the defense sector, we believe that the company has lot to gain from the opening up of the defense sector to private players. The governments trust creates a huge entry barrier to new entrants. However, the orders can be sporadic making the future prospects a little unpredictable. Engineering stocks like L&T, Crompton Greaves and BHELare currently trading in the green.

According to a leading business daily, India's largest private sector lenderICICI Bank has got a Qualified Full Banking (QFB) status in Singapore. This means that the bank through its Singapore branch can launch full banking services in Singapore going forward. It may be noted that since 2003, the bank has been offering banking services like international loan syndication and corporate banking in Singapore. With the new QFB approval the bank will also be able to take deposits and disburse loans in Singapore. ICICI Bank believes that this is significant for the bank as it expects the client base to increase significantly in the market. This will also strengthen the banks footprint in terms of corporate, commercial, wealth management and direct banking services in the region. Though this appears to be a positive for the bank, we hope that it does not go over the board in aggressively tapping the market and as a consequence amass more bad debts on its books. Currently, the stock of ICICI Bank is trading lower.

Interesting were the recent media reports about Indians getting luxurious, bulbous bow, terrain hugging Shinkansen, a high speed rail network or bullet trains (dangan ressha) as they are known outside Nippon for their blistering pace, for Ahemedabad-Mumbai and Hyderabad corridor.

Interesting I say, because in Japan's efficient world of Shinkansen, left, right and center, they blend in perfectly with other high tech surrounding of buildings, bridges and cement jungle, but such would not be the case, in case of India, which would look like a Zenaida asiatica (white-winged dove) among the corvus corax (raven), considering the surrounding structures of Indian infrastructure to be incongruous cosmetically, and if that would not be enough, there would be some folks defecating in the open (wide spread slums), exposing their genitals to the dismay of high class paying travelers of the future.

India ordering bullet train, Is like a Mumbai slum dweller ordering his food from Leela Kempinski - a five star hotel.

Above paragraph should not be taken lightly, For we are not known to produce world class products and buildings (quote Ratan Tata). We try to make them good but never better, leave the best for now. The first impression of any foreigner is that of his landing at Indian Airport, and you know where I am coming from. Look at the Changi Airport of Singapore, Sears Towers, the marvels of quality engineering at its best, and our old fashioned airports with bare basics. Although India is changing in this reagrd, yet the pace of the progress is tardy.

But it does not matter, If bullet train would give us a face lift, so be it, lets go ahead and import them from Japan Rail, lay our tracks and ply them. When our Cambridge educated, blue turban PM has decided to do it, hey, let us all do it, lets join hands and create consensus on this. Japanese Shinkansen travel is exorbitantly expensive for international tourists, imagine a cup of coffee costing 3 dollar plus in Tokyo, against this backdrop India should do more to attract tourists with nation wide bullet train network attracting many more travelers in the process at one-tenth of the cost of Japanese ride, well, so is the coffee price.

But do we have Madam Sonia's nod for such a massive project? Boy, Italy is a high speed train friendly country too, they have ETR 500 series that runs 300 KPH too. Something is amiss that I don't understand. Why Japanese and not Italian? Is Sushi better than Spaghetti and Pasta? It seems so in this case. While Indians have just one model to choose from Italy, Japan on the other hand offers several (0 series, 100,200,300,400,500,700,800, E-1, E-2,E-3, E-4, N700, 700T series) with its impressive record of safety attached as a tag of quality. Milestone indeed with millions of enthusiasts worldwide collecting various bullet train models.

Please note the fact here that Pakistan has already started the feasiblity study on thier bullet trains:

The bullet train plan of Pakistan Railways kicked off on Saturday when a consortium of three countries was awarded contract to undertake feasibility study of the project, which would make Pakistan a rail-friendly country. By initiating the feasibility study, Pakistan has thus become the first country in South Asia to take the initiative of bullet train which is very much a pioneering train with a very high speed record.

When we talk about Shinkansen, the speed factor comes to the fore instantly, For that is the mainstay of these high velocity trains coupled with comfort and luxury. And as we do not have no proper information of which model GOI would choose among several models going from, and whether they would be diesel to save on overhead electric line (The world's fastest diesel train is the Russian TEP80, at 273 km/h) or electric, Japan Rail/Hitachi have both the versions although diesel is not in vogue in Japan so Keshto would not speculate on this.

Talk about high speed trains, Japan is the Mecca with its vast network full of super fast trains with 300 runs a day on busy network and around 3 billion passenger so far to its credit. Mother of all the high speed rail network, yet running the trains punctually, efficiently and fares reimbursed should the train be late, truly remarkable system with no parallels! Can we expect the same from Indians used to Indian Railways, the biggest employer of India?

Then there is a track issue, High speed trains require new train track that would use no fish plates, it should be welded all the way and laid over thick bed of ballast because of terrible earth shaking velocity.

Last but not the least, its safety factor. When you pay them their price you ought to demand the best, For what is high speed worth sans safety? Japanese engineers have installed seismic monitors on newer lines at every 20 KM, by virtue of being the most earthquake prone country in the world.

On the other hand India is a land rife with Pakistan backed terrorism who have already demonstrated their prowess in the form of Bombay Bomb Blast, Jaipur, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad. So it is but natural for our GOI to ask the manufacturer about possible installation of some sensors against potential sabotage -- kind of early warning. It should be noted that each bullet train stops (when brakes applied) at about 3 km far, which takes about one minute plus of time.

How easy it would be to derail the super fast train by simply putting an obstacle on the track and make it fall like a nine pins.

We don't want more S-6 compartments (Sabermati Express) on our bullet a la Godhra please!

And finally do Indians have to go with sushi and sake to enjoy bullet trains ride?

Not at all. Remember the old ads for Hebrew National hot dogs -- you don't have to be Jewish to love them.

Shinkansen is not kosher Item, yet it is pride of Japan, newer models have big letters printed on them saying; AMBITIOUS JAPAN.

You know, rather than Shinkansen is not needed in India even if Japan and China donate a system like that to Pakistan in economic aid. Simply because considering the luxury of the train that it would provide the passengers, its ticket fee will be more than Shatabdi, which would be equal to the average fare of a low cost airline ticket or maybe very slightly less. It is true that we need a major overhaul and replace the current डब्बा trains with China-style high speed, aerodynamic shaped sleek trains, but certainly not something to the level of Shinkansen which would be redundant and slow down our airline industry boom.

Let Pakistan have that since their airline industry is almost dead barring their Middle East market.

Japanese consortium chosen to conduct India high-speed rail study

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- India's Railway Ministry said Thursday it has selected a Japanese-led consortium to conduct a prefeasibility study for one of its six proposed high-speed rail corridors across the country.

The contract for the prefeasibility study for one of the two southern corridors has been given to a consortium comprising Japan Railway Technical Service and Oriental Consultants Co., both based in Tokyo, and Parsons Brinckerhoff India, a spokesman for the ministry said.

The consortium is expected to submit its report to the government in seven months, he said.

The spokesman's confirmation came after Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa said Thursday in a written reply to a question in parliament that out of six corridors, consultants for four have been selected and studies are at various stages of progress.

Muniyappa also noted that the Railways Ministry has also decided to set up a National High-Speed Rail Authority for planning, standard setting, implementing and monitoring of high-speed rail projects.

There is one project in W.B.

Difficult mountain terrain in N-E states. May be in Phase-II and beyond.

Few years ago we heard the news of introduction of high speed bullet trains in India, but nothing was heard about it after that. Well, Here is the good news, Indian Railways' top officials are into a dialogue with the Japanese delegation that just visited India, for introducing high speed bullet trains system under which the trains would run at a speed of 300km/hr. The Railways has already selected the six speed corridors where these trains would run and a feasibility study would be conducted very soon.

A high speed rail authority will be set up for which the cabinet note is ready. The authority will decide the management and ownership of each high speed corridor. It will also decide based on the study whether a particular corridor will be implemented on PPP or non PPP. The Pune-Mumbai – Ahmedabad high speed study is complete and the study on Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Varanasi-Patna and Howrah-Haldia corridors will be done and reports will be submitted soon. Even the tenders for the study of Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulum-Thiruvananthapuram high speed corridor are under final negotiations

Japan which has become India's one of the most trusted friends lately, has shown great interest in the project. Indian railways believe with the help of japan which already runs high speed trains can show India the way in this field. In fact a team of 12 members from railways had gone to Japan to study the high speed train system.

We need to upgrade our existing infrastructure but along with this we need to move into high technology areas like the Bullet Train. Once it is introduced there will be many technological spinoffs that can help the IR with their regular work.

Also with high speed trains on important routes like Delhi-Ludhiana, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Bangalore, just to name a few, we can take the pressure off the highways.

there is a lot, i mean A LOT of difference in meaning and time delay in implementation, between discussing an idea and implementing it physically.
i wonder who will be the rail minister then?

Is this the first time we are hearing of "high speed train" proposals? Yet another proposal, yet another study, yet another survey!! Our netas and babus have gone on foreign junkets to "study" HSR tech in other nations. All these "HSR studies" need to be put under the CAG scanner.

And mark my words - if this project is in the hands of Indian railways, nothing will ever happen. We can forget about it ever becoming reality in the hands of the regressive laggard babus in IR.

High speed trains are unnecessary white elephants in Indian context. Just ego boosters with little practical use especially in the era of reduced costs for air travel.

What is needed is :

  • Completion of broad gauge conversion of all existing routes and electrification of major routes.
  • Laying of new lines especially in the North East.
  • Six laning all existing four lane highways and four laning the important two lane NHs.
  • Metros in all metropolitan cities and important Tier II cities.

Some thoughts:
  • Build High Speed Trains so that people can travel from distances of upto 150 kilometers (trans-suburbia) in not more than 60 minutes. That way, people from far flung areas can travel to the cities, work and return home.
  • Let the High Speed Trains also connect cities on a point-to-point basis, like Duronto with no intermediate commercial halts.
  • Let these trains, for distances over 300 kilometers, be day-only trains with double decker chair cars. That way, more people can travel, for lesser cost, thus making the service viable.
  • Let there be dedicated tracks for these high speed trains, but they should be broad gauge so that at the time of war, they can be used by our regular rolling stock.

Increase the express trains speed to 200Kmph.
Doubling and electrifying in all important routes.
More freight corridors.
No Mamata for Railways

These should be done in future.

High speed ? No, never going to happen in India.

The moment the tracks are doubled and electrified the speeds will automatically go up. All the Coaches and Locos are rated upto 180 KMph but due to congestion on the lines they cannot go faster than the present speeds. Case in point is the Rajdhani Express, 20 years back it used to cover Kolkata to Delhi in 19 Hours and still does the same today, with newer locos.
