Thai have always hesitated due to great environmental impact so instead the KIMP was chosen. The current idea of the canal has been proposed by the chinese but it will require an investment over than the 100 US Billion dollars. So the project going head is hard.

The engineering challenge is to great many cuts have to be made in the mountains greater than 100 m so an extremely hard job even harder than Panama canal.

  1. A canal will divide the country physically and pose a security risk. It is feared that a canal would separate the four southern-most provinces from the rest of Thailand and allow secessionist movements to further develop.
  2. Demand for transit will not meet expectations.
  3. The excavated soil will need to be dealt with.
  4. Environmental concerns.
  5. Cost factor is to much.
  6. Opposition from Malaysia and Singapore.

Ya'll Nibbiars First of all india is not interested in the Kra Canal but the Kra Inter model connectivity project which started before the Asian Financial crises but got cancelled and it included two major ports a wide multi lane highway between them rail link with multi tracks and pipeline for water oil and gas. That MMT was to be 150 mm broad only few highway section was eventually constructed. That projects is much cheaper than building a canal.

The uncompleted Highway 44 Section see the 150 M distance between the lanes.

1. First route is 50 km.

2. Second route is 125 km.

3. Third route is 135 Km.

4. Fourth route is 102 Km.

The land bridge route is 190 km.

Singapore become rich due to their status as a trading hub by leveraging their location near the Malacca strait. But will they be okay with this project?

Both singapore and malaysia opposes this canal first proposed during late 1800s little importance was given due to the singapore in 70's to 80's the canal was proposed again but never materialized. In 2005 the Melcchas has again proposed it. But the malaysia and singapore opposes it. The rail and road as land Bridge is a alternate to it.

Two major ports : 2 billion us dollars each.
Bridges over the canal four : 2 billion us dollars.
Road along the canal on both the side possible length 150 km each : 1 billion dollars.
Dams and resovier to provide water all around the years : 2 billion us dollars.
Rail link along the canal : 1 billion us dollars.
Environment protection and conversation costs : 2 billion us dollars.
Construction of two sets of lock on each side of the canal for a new panamax class ships : 1 billion us dollars each.
Construction of two major airports : 1 billion us dollar.
Social infractures: 2 billions us dollars.
102 kilometres long, 500 wide and 30 deep canal dreging incluring the reservoir will cost : 13 billion us dollars.
Cutting many mountain passes ranging upto 100 m : 10 billion us dollars.
Administrative insurances coat : 1 billion us dollar.
Project affected peoples : 7 billion us dollars.
The project could easily land anywhere between 50 to 60 billion us dollar.

The 30 billion US Dollars estimate given by the Melcchas is under stated and not includes the support infractures.

Clearly stated we alone can do the project we would need many collectors to complete the project.

The land bridge project will coat just 25 percent of the cost for the canal.

Currently the thai are looking for the land bridge project instead of the canal project.

Ya'll Nibbiars there are many conflicting reports. I think most are confusing the Canal with the Inter model transport project.
