F3R standard ready for delivery
This is a big step that is being set up for the French fighter Rafale with the qualification of the new F3-R standard.
The start of work to adapt the updates began in October of the 144 Rafale currently in service within the Air Force and the Navy. The first ten Rafale F3-R aircraft, four of which will be delivered before the end of the year, to complete their operational appropriation, already initiated alongside the test teams of the DGA.
An important update:
Like the previous standards, the new F3-R standard brings major software and hardware evolutions.
In particular, two new capabilities profoundly change the game in the field of combat aviation:
- The association of the new "Meteor" very long-range air-to-air missile with the active antenna "RBE2" electronic scanning radar.
- The arrival of the new generation "Talios" nacelle, which greatly improves the capabilities of target detection, reconnaissance and identification, day and night for air-to-ground strikes very precise.
In terms of air-to-ground capability, the pilot will be able to select the impact mode of the guided laser / GPS AASM bomb.
In addition, the Rafale will also be able to fire the GBU-16 Paveway II guided laser bomb, whose guide kit is mounted on a bomb body Mk 83. Weighing 500 kg, the explosive charge is 200kg. it is now used by M2000D only. Its integration will allow the Rafale to hit hard targets with a small to medium size.
In the cockpit and in a less visible manner, the Rafale will have a new IFF mode 5 / S, the SPECTRA system will be reinforced with better electronic warfare capabilities and the NATO encrypted communication system, the L16 Link, will be improved. In addition, the radar RBE2-AESA (active antenna or Active Electronically Scanned Array) will be modernized and the Rafale has an AGCAS system (Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System) which allows to recover the aircraft in case of a loss of control. We will also find the system SAASM (Selective availability anti-spoofing module). The latter allows, among other things, to avoid the electronic jamming of the GPS by the opponent. The Rafale Marine will have for the refueling of the "buddy-buddy" system which will be carried out with the NARANG nacelle (next-generation refueling platform). The new F3-R standard also takes into account operational feedback, including modular air-to-ground weaponry (AASM), interoperability and regulatory requirements. The continuous improvement approach of the Rafale continues thus reinforcing the omni-role of the aircraft. Note that the next stage of the Rafale is the standard F4 available in 2025. This standard will in particular return the aircraft even more efficient in terms of connectivity.
Missile MICA NG:
In parallel with the standard F3-R, the aircraft will also be equipped from 2026 the new generation of the missile "MICA". Developed in two versions with infrared (IR) and electromagnetic (EM) homing systems, these innovative missiles in the fields of self-steering and propulsion make it possible to maintain the operational advantage in the face of evolving threats. In addition to MBDA, the manufacturers involved in this project are in particular Thales, Safran and Roxel, for self-propelled and propulsion.
