Per this Eurasian Times article India chose GE F404 over EJ 200 because of stability & reliability of technology and the age old new car buying formula- kitna deti hai..

The F404 engine provides higher power, improved fuel efficiency, and increased mission capability for the combat-proven Boeing F/A-18C/D Hornet.

Earlier, the engine has already been praised by former Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, who said that the American-made engines had excellent fuel efficiency and that he had rarely seen that among the contemporary fighter jets that he had flown during his career.

We fought well against shoe string budget and arms embergo from super-powers, only if we could invest 3 times more fund in Kaveri, we could have mk3 series of Kaveri by now ...

Btw does anybody know anything about the pic released in DFI about modern looking engine ?
2 years back DRDO claimed that they made a very top tier specialist team to make AMCA engines... I just wish we don't get fooled by Rolls-Royces khwabi polao andwaste another decade negotiating with them only to be left hanging like Safran.

Total spend on Kaveri - starting from scratch - was less than $400 million over 20+ years, I think. No way would $1-2 billion be enough to get a working engine would be my guess.

Without very substantial help (and $$$), I do not see a viable engine for AMCA being produced in India.

Another reason why we should go with Safran for an M88 Dervative.
Safran is asking for $6b, RR settled for $3-4b so Safran will only help with 46kN dry kaveri for UAVs while RR helps us with 110kN . Plenty of nuggets from the same article posted here already:

French offer for co-development of the new engine based on its Snecma M88-4 could have come at a cost to India over $6 Billion, as per informed sources which were deemed too high by Indian negotiators. Since many past negotiations with French have failed to get desired results, it was decided that French collaboration will be limited only to the development of the Dry Kaveri engine variant that can develop a 46kN class of Thrust.
India will be fully funding the program and the financial cost report submitted by Rolls Royce could see India investing approx. $3-4 Billion in the development of the new engine and other facilities that include the integration of some of the engine technology that already has been developed by the DRDO locally. the engine will use some of the technologies already developed for the Kaveri engine program like its new fan section and FADEC system, but it will have a new core section.
The proposed core section of the engine will have growth potential of 20% in increased thrust generation with minor changes in the core section that is done to make it future-proof. DRDO also plans to develop a variant of the engine that be used for single-engine fighter jets in the future. DRDO has plans to swap F414 engines in Tejas Mk2 with locally made engines from 2040 onwards when their due for new engines.
The engine will be tested completely in India for which India might be also procuring a flying Test-Bed platform that could be a commercial airline jet for flight test purposes. One of the Prototypes of AMCA will be paired with one existing F414 engine to become Testbed aircraft for the new engine in later stages. Plans are to have an Flying Prototype engine by 2029 and conclude all flying tests in next three years.
Intellectual property rights of the jet will remain with India and Rolls Royce has also agreed to transfer its IP rights to India, in whatever engine technology that it will be in charge to develop. Rolls Royce has agreed to be a partner in the engine development agreement that is quite common in the Indian Auto-sector where the development of an engine is fully funded by the company while foreign technical consortium in charge of the design and development of the engine holds no Intellectual property rights over it since it is fully funded by the auto company.

Great news. Reality has set in - it costs a few $billion to develop a new engine. I have no idea what SAFRAN will want to get the 46kN engine to work but I hope that neither OEM soaks India for everything it can get.

Less than 8 years to go to get a flying 110kN engine means it's time to get moving on finalising the RR contract at a run rather than the standard crawl where Indian procurement is concerned. We don't want to end up with half the AMCA Mk2's leaving the FAL with F414's in them, do we?

Which forum , well my estimate 8 billion atleast , 20% growth potential us huge that too in core not afterburner , means it's base thrust without modification dry would be about 67 kn , add 20% , 80 kn 😱😱😱😱😱😱 , or more , that's fucking huge , also European engine are lighter , new gen engine would be much more light than other in class , all this considering maximum thrust us 110 , not 116 kn type , without f 22 type nozzle , we can achieve that performance , amca mk 2 , can be heavier and more powerful .

That's the worst case scenario , if they found all our tech as useless and everything has to be made from basic , if we are using past experience ut would be less , much less

Development cost for f 135 was 8 billion or so , looking at it's class and all , 110 kn engine won't cost more than 6 billion , add rr commission and all , 8 billion should be it.
The article posted earlier by someone has already stated they are going to use the new fan developed recently & existing Kaveri FADEC. RR will focus on hot core section.

They already have an obligation to discharge offsets from the Rafale contract. Will they ask for more? :scared1:

110kn Engine for AMCA in collaboration with a friendly foreign partner in the next 7-8 years. ~ Dr. Kota Harinarayana


1st two sqns planned to be GE, last four DRDO-RR. A certified engine by 2032 🤞
Read somewhere that just the certification and testing will be $ 2b!

Plans are to have a flying Prototype engine by 2029 and conclude all flying tests in next three years.
