Srinagar, May 23: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday said that the final settlement of Kashmir issue and Pakistan's stability were two sides of the same coin.

"Although people of Kashmir are striving for freedom in their own way but it is simultaneously a war for the Pakistan's survival," Geelani said while addressing a 2-day international conference on Kashmir held by PaK University at Muzaffarabad via video-conferencing.

He said Kashmir struggle was purely indigenous but its continuation was "imperative for Pakistan's survival."

"India's intentions for territorial aggrandizement are extremely dangerous. To continue its military control on Kashmir, India is not only pursuing the policy of harassing and embarrassing Pakistan but is also enhancing its influence in Afghanistan."

Geelani said the friendly relations between India and Pakistan could not be restored until Kashmir was made as core issue in talks between the two countries and focus made on its immediate resolution.

He impressed upon Pakistan rulers to continue their country's traditional stand on Kashmir issue and continue their support to struggle of Kashmiris.
Geelani said the Kashmiris were continuing their struggle with full resolve and determination despite New Delhi's all "repressive measures" to quell it.

He said India should give up its rigidity and adopt a realistic approach. "We are not against talks, but parleys won't yield any result until India acknowledges the disputed status of Kashmir and involves Kashmiris in talks as cardinal party," he said.

at this rate i dont think Pak is going to survive next few years, it will be better for Geelani to look for another country.

Given the doldrums Pak army finds itself in,some upping of the ante visa viv Kashmir is in order.Pakistan army,in my reckoning,is in desperate need for a standoff with India, the previous attempt to elicit a response from India,by carrying out the Mumbai attacks, failed to bring forth the needed results,an open high rhetoric standoff.Pak army may even have convinced itself that even fresh incident like Mumbai 26/11 will probably result in a similar muted response from India.

This leaves Kashmir as the only alternative where India can be forced to respond militarily, allowing Pak military to raise the patriotic fervor.Pakistan cannot afford a Kargil, however not doing anything to extricate themselves from their current mess is also not a viable.

Indian not only must be vigilant in the coming days, but must be proactive on the security front,we must anticipate pak moves and not let them dictate the flow of events.

Right now Kashmir looks more like the Cause of death for Pakistan rather an imperative to Survive!! Are they this blind to the facts that are unfolding in their country? Just to hate us they have suck up and boot lick everyone else in world, right from the pig eating, atheist China to Christian evangelist USA, when all they had to ever do is try to mend fences with us and we would have accepted them long ago.

Why boot lick and beg others and kill each other while pushing your country into an quagmire when all they had to do was to reconcile Kashmir issue peacefully with some give and take. Even if they gave as much territory they gave to China as a gift to us we would found more ways to reciprocate.

Well Gilani is right about Kashmir being important for Pakistans survival. "Support " for Kashmir means terrorism which means $$$ from the US.

Interestingly Pakistanis try to Tom Tom "indigenous" struggle though there is nothing indigenous left in the Kashmir "struggle".

No amount of reasoning with Pak about the futility of it's role in Kashmir will make it see reason. It will continue the way it has been over the last six decades.

Gilani pointed out "dangerous" Indian territorial expansion ideas, but till date no one has said why they have for involved in Kashmir whose initial movement was for independence? It is Pakistan who has gone to war with india three times to wrest Kashmir. Pakistan was and is not interested in an independent Kashmir and wants all of it for itself. The world at large has recognized Pak role in Kashmir so much so that Arab countries have now dissociated themselves from it.

It is sad to see the leaders of Pakistan diverting attention from true existential threats to persist with the status quo. One can blame militancy, fanaticism, social strife etc etc. all they want, but at the end of the day it is poor leadership that will be the death of Pakistan.
