Kashmir issue resolution essential for lasting peace: Pak
Islamabad (PTI) Heightening its rhetoric on Kashmir, Pakistan on Thursday said a "fair and just" solution to the long-standing issue with India was essential for lasting peace in the region and rejected as "untenable" attachment of any pre-conditions to the resumption of the peace process.

Attaching any pre-conditions to the resumption of parleys would be "untenable," Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told a weekly news briefing.

He said that a "fair and just" resolution of the Kashmir issue was essential for lasting peace in South Asia.

Mr. Basit was responding to a question about India linking resumption of the composite dialogue to Pakistan taking action against the perpetrators of last year's Mumbai attacks.

"Without a dialogue, we can't understand each other and get on with resolving issues facing the region," he said and asserted that there was no question of any compromise on Pakistan's stand on the Kashmir issue.

His remarks came two days after Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani, in a strident anti-India statement, asked "occupying forces" in Jammu and Kashmir to stop repression.

Claiming that the Kashmir issue held "the key to durable peace in the region," Mr. Gilani had said "we also hope that Indian occupying forces will cease human rights abuses and violence will come to an end and a conducive atmosphere will be created for the final settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute."

'Fair and Just' resolution: Vacate the POK.

Untenable: to whom?. Not for us definitely. So, its your problem.

These headless chickens are unable to hold onto what already exists with them (FATA, NWFP), they are asking for more (J&K).

Fair and just in the sense...he means give up kashmir and we will show him the birdie...This has been happening for decades. What is going to happen?...The Pakistani army will lose credibility if that happens.

Americans are useless to anybody but themselves quite frankly...

I still advocate that our position after 26/11 was wrong and we've achieved nothing by our soft stance toward Pakistan which is unraveling even as we speak...

I'd love to hear the opinions of most of our moderators who were with the meek stance of the government... what positives do they see now ???

A war is not a good idea right now. Increase in security and upgrade of the economy is in top priority. Pakistanis have nothing to lose now. We have a great deal to lose. We rather not go for war and give them a chance to unite and pullout from their western borders.

True and agree with Satish here, the enemy is always looking for an lame excuse of their act of cowardliness we should not provide them with that excuse and same time a tougher approach needed from to dealt with and with taken care that all our appeals to The current US Administration will fell into deaf ear.

I would rather see a naval blockade or some sort of provocative things. Their trade routes must come under fire or sending two destroyers near their port so as to piss them off....they are already going bankrupt...And people it costs them a lot to mobilise their troops. These are the things that should be done.

The soundbytes coming from Pakistan on the Kashmir issue are from the Gilani camp. This is part of Pakistan's internal power tussle going on between the army backed Gilani and zardari.remember Gilani firing Pakistan's NSA ,Durrani over the kasab admission.

Zardari had been keeping low since the Lawyers protest and the reinstatement of the CJ and even allowed Gilani to handle the Crisis in swat and NWFP.Zardari was not happy with the deals the army was striking with the pro Taliban entity and finally with the help of the US he has managed to get the army to start ops, reluctantly ofcourse, against the Taliban elements.

Gilani is trying to provoke India, because if the current ops in Swat manages to restore even a modicum of pak writ in the tribal areas,Zardari will be confident enough to give the boot to Gilani and consolidate his hold on the govt.

Indian wouldn't like to undermine Zardari at this stage

absolutely agree with what satish has to say and i second himon that. for a change look at the things at stake for the two countries as has been pointed out by him. here is a country which is literally defunct which has no real future and is in a desperate situation and if they see themselves going completely down the drain what else will make them more happy than also take their erstwhile enemy alongside, should we oblige them on such an aspect, i for one would certainly never give them such an opportunity on a platter. now look at india and even in this very trying economic times, indians happen to be one of the most optimistic people about their present and future and india still happens to be one of the best performing economies where we are at a position to challenge the prc in terms of growth rate figures a glimpse of which we got recently when india grew at 5.8% when during the same period prc grew at 6.1%. should we let go all these goodies for a failed state called islamic republic of pakistan, certainly not.

let us for a moment think of the consequences had india attacked pakistan post 26/11. a divided pakistan that we see now where pak army is attacking and killing its own people which is sowing the seeds of resentment with in that country for a troubled future would have never been possible but on the contrary they would have stood united in the words of baituallah mehsud and confronted any attack coming from indian soil. pakistan was desperate for such a solution but thank GOD better sense prevailed on india's part and we never provided such a solution to them. best way of dealing with pakistan is let them fight and kill each other and if possible provide them with arms and ammunitions in doing that and in the process make them so weak that they disintegrate so that there is a separate baluchistan and we get back our kashmir which has been occupied by them. let us not be a solution to the problems that pakistan faces and we should never provide them with any such opportunities.

the other way of doing the same is by making the internal security one of the finest in the world and for that we need to learn a lot from the americans. every time there is an attack in india even without any probe the fingers are pointed on isi and post prove the same gets repeated. for GOD's sake, this is our country run by us and not by pakistanis, and if it is our incompetence then we need to point it out but as has been the trend nothing of the sort happens and never a politician, a cop, an intelligence agency official gets implicated and gets fired from their posts. come to think of it, its been 6 months post 26/11, and still the mumbai police is not equipped to deal with a repeat of 26/11, who is to blame for this apathy, isi? now imagine if this is what happens in a city like mumbai post 26/11 what would be the situation of the country, who is responsible for this, is it the pakistanis? let us get real and stop pretending to be asleep, because if we continue doing it we will keep having 26/11s and then we will put our best act by blaming pakistanis, whereas when the real culprits are we ourselves.

I would prefer they keep POK and convert LOC into the International Border. Who wants a radicalized under developed society? The POK is worse off than the NWFP and Baluchistan. The people there depend on charity from terrorist organizations like Jamat ul Dawa(LET) to sustain themselves.

What is there in POK mate? Just barren land with mountains. What is the use of having it?...we already have the economically Viable part. The PoK actually keeps China happy. If that is gone China is a cornered cat. China's only alternative route is the Karakorum Highway as the whole of South China sea and the Mallaca straits can be blockaded. so it is a strict no for PoK.

Getting POK under India gives direct access of CAR to India through Afghanistan and Tajkistan without involving Pakistan. Moreover, it cuts-off the links between Pakistan and China. It will be like 'killing two birds with one shot'. Its worth the risk whenever we get the chance to get our land back.

satish, pok is strategically located. one, this region connects prc with pakistan through land via which both these countries plan a road highway and a rail network connecting the two countries, so if we have pok with us then we physically cut the land route between these two countries and secondly with pok india will be connected to CAR which will be of great essence to fullfill our energy needs, which will also help us in trade with this region and will make the trade much cheaper, something for the moment we are trying through iran via afghanistan. there is another important aspect, one of the reasons for resentment amongst the local kashmiris is the loc so if we can have pok with the people there, a big problem gets sorted out and when these people can go to any part of kashmir with out restriction and be with their relatives then they will spend their energies in improving their lives than on futile exercise of picking up arms against the state. pok, as per me will be the most important accomplishment and a bigger one than the creation of bangladesh if we were to pull it off.

Dear Satish , same way I am thinking as Riteshji and completely agree with him , here is the map of the area (Image : Wikipedia), the strategic location of the POK can be seen from here:

A road through Afghanistan can connect it with Tajikistan and open the CAR.
