Kandhamal riot accused MLA acquitted in arson case

Phulbani: BJP MLA Manoj Pradhan, booked under several charges for his alleged role in last year's communal violence in Kandhamal, was today acquitted in a case of arson by a local court.

Pradhan, who is in jail facing about 14 criminal cases, was acquitted in one because of lack of proper evidence in an incident of arson at Pisamaha village under Raikia police station area.

A large number of houses at Pisamaha village were set ablaze on August 27, 2008 during the riots last year with a person named Gutia Digal lodging a complaint against Pradhan.

The additional sessions judge of Fast Track Court-1, said that evidence against Pradhan was not sufficient to substantiate the charge of house burning.

Pradhan was elected to the state Assembly as a BJP candidate from G Udaygiri segment while he was in jail. He was released for a month to take oath as MLA and attend the budget session. He returned to jail on July 31.

Remember Orissa riot victims: Archbishop
TNN 29 August 2009, 05:27am IST

PANAJI: Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao has appealed to the parishes in Goa and church-run educational institutions to observe September 6, 2009, as a day of prayer and fasting to express solidarity with the process of rebuilding and restoring peaceful co-existence in the aftermath of violence in Orissa and a few other states a year ago.

In a circular issued to pastors and superiors of educational and religious institutions, the archbishop said, “We believe that remembering and praying over the painful memories of the year gone by will re-connect us with the victims in solidarity and also strengthen our faith.” Recalling how the nation had bled a year ago after scores of people were killed and thousands ran to safety, he said “...the spate of violence, arson, cold-blooded murders and torching of houses, Christian institutions and places of worship seemed to have no end, amidst government’s apathy towards the victims’ misery.”

The Goa archdiocese had forwarded a contribution of Rs 59,12 lakh from its faithful towards rehabilitation of victims of the anti-Christian violence. “Another Rs 10 lakh are now being sent, out of which Rs 8,95 lakh represent the donations that reached us after we had already sent the first offering,” the circular states.

Orissa shuts down last Kandhamal relief camps
IANS 4 September 2009, 10:08pm IST

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa government has shut down the last of the relief camps for the victims of communal riots in Kandhamal district, an official said on Friday.

"We have shut down the last two relief camps at Tiangia and Mandakia. We have asked people to go back to their homes," Kandhamal District Collector Krishan Kumar said.

The camps had a total of around 700 people living in them.

At least 38 people were killed in violence in Kandhamal following the murder of Hindu right wing leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides in August last year.

More than 25,000 Christians were forced to flee after their houses were attacked by rampaging mobs, who held them responsible for Saraswati's killing although the police blamed the Maoist rebels. The Maoists later owned up the killings.

The administration had set up 13 relief camps in the district to provide protection to the victims.

BJP MLA Manoj Pradhan arrested, guilty in Kandhmal riot case

Kandhmal: Manoj Pradhan, the controversial BJP MLA from Kandhmal in Orissa, was arrested on Thursday after a fast-track court hearing cases relating to anti-Christian violence in 2008, held him guilty of playing a major role in the murder of a Dalit Christian, Vikram Nayak.

Vikram Nayak of Tiangia village near Raikia, was murdered on August 25, 2008.

Manoj Pradhan faces six years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 15,500.

In June this year, Pradhan was convicted by the fast-track court and was sentenced to seven years in jail for his role in a mob attack that led to the death of another Dalit Christian. However, eight days later, he was granted bail by the Orissa High Court.

Pradhan, who represents the communally sensitive constituency of G. Udaygiri, has so far been acquitted in seven of 14 riot-related cases filed against him. Of these, three cases relate to murder and he has been convicted by the fast-track courts in two already.

Pradhan's counsel said he would now move the High Court for bail.
