Pakistan’s JF-17 Fighter Jet An ‘Absolute Failure’; Could Opt For J-10s Instead- Greek Media
The JF-17 Thunder was said to have fulfilled Pakistan’s need for a low-cost, light-weight, all-weather multi-role fighter jet. However, these aircraft are now reportedly becoming a liability for Pakistan owing to their high operations and maintenance cost when compared with other fighter jets in the same bracket.

Islamabad considers the JF-17 is on par with the fighter jets like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Mikoyan Mig-29, and Mirage-2000. The Pakistan Air Force fighters were supposed to be “equipped with Western avionics and powered by the Russian Klimov RD 93 aero-engine”.

The capabilities of the fighter jet were judged on the basis of its avionics, armament, and engine that powers it. But the aircraft did not show the desired results, according to a report by Pentapostagma.

It is also believed that the fighters, which were a part of the retaliatory operations against the Indian Air Force during the February 2019 aerial skirmishes, performed poorly against India’s Mirage-2000 and SU-30 fighter jets.

The JF-17 Thunder was meant to be the successor of the F-16 fighter jets which Pakistan had procured from the United States.

However, as per reports, the Thunder jets showed low endurance, poor accuracy, and low weapon carrying capability during the 2019 conflict with India.

The JF-17 fighters used all of its Range Extension Kit (REK) bombs but failed to hit the targets due to effective jamming and counterattacks by Indian Air Force fighter jets.

The lightweight, single-engine, multi-role JF-17 Thunder fighter was designed after PAF sought a replacement for their aging combat aircraft like the A-5C, F-7P/PG, Mirage III, and Mirage V.

The Thunder jet has been developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China.

The two counties had decided to ink an agreement to jointly develop and produce the fighter way back in 1999, with both nations deciding to share the development costs.

Pakistan currently possesses a fleet of over 100 JF-17 fighter jets, which can be used for multiple roles, including interception, ground attack, anti-ship, and aerial reconnaissance.

However, it has failed to meet the expectations of experts. According to Greek media, in terms of the air defense role, the fighter jet’s Link-17 data link is not only unreliable, but it does not have a sufficient data transfer rate as well.

Besides, it is not compatible with the PAF’s American-built F-16 fighter jets’ Link-16 to give the aircraft true interoperability capability. As per reports, the Thunder does not even possess an effective beyond-visual-range (BVR) missile or airborne interception radar.

In addition, the critical elements of the JF-17 avionics are said to be the KLJ-7 Al radar and Weapon Mission Management Computer (WMMC), and both have been facing a host of problems, the reports suggest.

While the KLJ-7 radar displayed degraded behavior and faced several operational and maintenance problems, the WMMC had limited capacity and showed a high rate of failure of a number of its modules, including the main computer module.

Once considered the fighter of the future, the JF-17 has been plagued with several problems of late, with reports suggesting that Pakistan might be looking to procure the Chinese J-10 fighters instead.

BBC Compares JF-17s With Rafale Jets & Poor SU-30 MKI Becomes The Scapegoat
By
EurAsian Times Desk
August 5, 2020
Even before the arrival of Rafale jets in India, the comparison between Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder and Rafale aircraft has been vigorously debated by military experts. Even the EurAsian Times did an analysis on Rafale Jets vs JF-17

While comparing the two, BBC in its analysis has tried to compare the capabilities of the two fighter jets and has incorporated the views of Indian and Pakistan Air Force officials without making a judgement.

India added five of the total 36 french origin aircraft contracted, in its fleet last week. The five Rafale aircraft made a touchdown at the IAF’s Ambala airbase covering a distance of nearly 7,000 km from France.

Pakistan Used JF-17s To Counter Balakot Strike
India launched ‘surgical strikes’ in Balakot last year when Indian warplanes crossed the border and dropped bombs claiming to have destroyed terror infrastructure in Balakot, a claim vehemently rejected by Pakistan.

In retaliation, the very next day, Pakistan came dangerously close to attacking Indian military installations but refrained from provoking the Indians and dropped bombs nearby the facilities. However, the PAF managed to shoot-down a MiG-21 Bison in aerial combat besides capturing Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, who was handed over to India on March 1, 2019.

After this feat, Indian Prime Minister echoed the same sentiment as former IAF chief and said if India had Rafale planes, the outcome of the Balakot incident with Pakistan would have been very different.

Pakistan military denied the claim that US-made F-16 jets were involved in the attack. “The aircraft which engaged those targets and fought them were JF-17,” stated then Pakistan Army spokesman – Major General Asif Ghafoor.

“Proud to announce, I was project director for JF-17 Thunder program jointly produced by Pakistan and China during the tenure of General Pervez Musharraf,” told retired PAF Air Marshall Shahid Latif said at the time. “Today, same jets targeted and shot down Indian Jets which entered Pakistani Airspace,” he said soon after the attack last year.

Rafale Capabilities
According to BBC’s analysis, Indian defence analyst Maroof Raza stated that Rafale can be called a ‘force multiplier’ due to its stealth features. He added that its operational capacity is 65 to 70 per cent, while the Sukhoi fighter jet has an operational capacity of 50 per cent. “It can land in mountainous areas and small places, and it can land on aircraft carriers at sea”.

Dassaut
Rafale Jets
As reported earlier by EurAsian Times, the Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multirole fighter aircraft equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions.

“Pakistan would not have responded on February 27 last year to the Balakot air strikes if India had the French-manufactured jets then,” former Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal (retd) BS Dhanoa said in reference to the retaliation carried out by Pakistani Air Force (PAF), a day after the Balakot strike.

JF-17 Capabilities
The ability to build this aircraft was acquired with the help of China. As per EurAsian Times report, the latest, powered-up version of the JF-17 fighter jet reportedly features technologies from China’s high-end J-20 fighter jet that will immensely boost its combat efficiency.

The JF-17 aircraft is installed with many commercial off-the-shelf technologies from the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China. It includes a new and larger holographic wide-angle head-up display and integrated cockpit display comparable to the one used by the J-20, in addition to an advanced infrared missile approach warning system used by J-20 fighter jets.

The report emphasises that since Pakistan manufactures the JF-17 itself, it already possesses facilities like upgradation and overhauling and hence won’t have to depend on any other country to ensure the development stages of this aircraft. In contrast, India would require the support of France for all such activities.

Is India Reluctant To Recognise JF-17’s Lead?
Speaking to BBC, Retired Air Vice Marshal of Pakistan Air Force – Shahzad Chaudhary made a comparison between Rafale and JF-17. He said that every aircraft is designed to achieve its goals and it is not correct to compare it in terms of speed, volume or any other aspect. “It’s like you start comparing cars and dumpers to see what is being used for what purpose,” he added.

According to Chaudhry, “JF-17 is the best option in terms of our goals. Indian planes were good even when Pakistan shot down an Indian plane (Mig-21) and India’s front line, co-called best jets like the SU-30 MKIs could not do anything.

Earlier, Pakistani experts had taken a dig at the Russian origin jets and stated – what really bothered the Indian Air Force was that Pakistan was able to shoot-down an Indian jet (Mig-21 Bison) from a very long range without giving any change to the Indian jets. Indian jets which were targetted included India’s front line Sukhoi-30 MKIs which only managed to somehow evade the AMRAAMs and were never able to hit back.

Former Air Marshal (retd) Shahid Latif told the BBC that Pakistan has acquired the capability to build as many aircraft as it wants as these jets as developed locally. Shahid Latif says that more than 100 JF-17s have been prepared and handed over to the Air Force and India would need to look-to France for almost anything and everything.

Latif also stated that the JF-17s are capable of almost everything that Rafale is. According to Latif, if Rafale is a fourth-generation jet, then JF-17s have the capability to be upgraded 4.5 generation jets.

From the Chinese point of view, the JF17 is a price compromise that meets Pakistan's needs, but not China's.The overall cost control is very good, and the total cost of R & D is 450 million US dollars.Pakistan and Chengdu Aircraft Company each contributed 50%.

The body is too small,This limits the range, the use of advanced engines, the use of larger radars, and the bomb load.
But be careful with JF17III, This will be equipped with an active phased array radar. PL15 should not be given to Pakistan, the range is too large, also afraid that the United States will take it to research.

The bomb load is 3.6 tons, the fuel is 2.3 tons, and the empty weight is less than 7 tons.Prices range from an initial $15 million to $25 million for an improved model. The advantage is that it is cheap, can launch medium-range air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, anti-ship missiles, multi-purpose, and can have money to replace old aircraft in large number, The front line is also close to the interior of Pakistan, A gun at the front. Needs and requirements are different.

These are not the needs of China's vast territory.

China needs long range, big bomb load,China will never equip JF17

The Chinese Air Force has deployed J16 in the western theater. Range 3900 km, normal configuration, maximum distance 4200 km, bomb load 12 tons,Maximum speed: Mach 2.3
The J-16 has AESA radar and is powered by the WS-10A engine. Weight is reduced through greater use of composite , materialsreceived radar-absorbent paint.

First of first a non technological argument , if jf 17 was good why plaf didn't inducted it , operational requirement for light fighter was always there is plaf , your beauty j 10 , has short comings like availability rate ,while you are defending jf 17 , a inferior jet with unreliable engine .
You stated a article comparing a light fighter with medium weight fighter , insulting a heavy weight fighter , standing ovation to you .
Service ceiling of su 30 is higher than jf 17 officially too, Don't talk in real air combat , as we know what bluff it is.

Next point ,which son of a whore claims to be a aviation expert while stating rafale can land on a aircraft carrier , really bitch , then what's the use of rafale m ,when air Force variant can do carrier role .

Pakistan makes jf 17 , they can overhaul , do maintenance , iaf don't send su 30 mki to russia for maintenance too.

The ex iaf cheif statement was due to high load carrying of rafale than mki , and spectra pod , also meteor is a formidable weapon which will sweat the shit out of porkies .

Jf 17 has components from 5 th gen j 20, as really if j 20 is a top notch stealth fighter , how will it power them with unreliable low energy generating engine , leave it that's something you won't understand .

Let's talk about manuverability , jf 17 is a sloth in it.

How came amraam be fired from jf 17, or you accept than pl 15 is a modified copy of aim 120d 😁😁😁

JF-17 is the last son of Mig21. Not a bad plane (I only speak of the frame + engine combo. We know nothing about the weapon system), but a short leg nearly made for point defense only.
You can try to compare it to M2000, but never to Rafale. They played in two very differents league.

Post-Balakot, PAF looking at increasing manpower, improving its infrastructure and buying new weapons
In the wake of the nasty surprise that was Balakot, when Indian Air Force fighters went deep into Pakistan, blew up a Jaish-e-Mohammad training camp and returned without even being challenged, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is looking at increasing its manpower, improving its infrastructure and buying new weapons.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is looking at a huge increase in personnel, of about 6,400, including civilians. This includes about 400 officers and 4,000 men. And this comes despite a gradual increase of 5,000 personnel between 2014 and February 2019, when the IAF struck Balakot. The increase from 2014 figures in a hefty ten per cent. From less than a lakh, the PAF will go up to over 110,000 personnel.

The biggest purchase planned by the PAF is more Airborne Warning and Control Systems or AWACS, or planes with radars on them to ensure the air-defence system is on the alert when planes enter Pakistan air space. These very expensive eyes in the sky should ensure that there's at least knowledge of an intrusion. In two cases-- the US operation in Abbottabad to kill terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in 2011 and the Balakot strike, Pakistan got to know and acted too late.

The PAF also wants 19 multi-role radars and some mobile observation units. Once again, this is an effort to increase the ability to detect intruders.

An airbase in Skardu will be upgraded from a forward operating base to a main operating base. This comes after the PAF established a new base in Bholari, near Karachi, in 2017. A centre of excellence is likely to be built as well.

The increase in strength will be in operational and air-defence capabilities, clearly weak areas, considering what happened in Abbottabad and Balakot.

This again proves chinese awacs which pakistan bought don't work at all. Otherwise pakistan already has too many awacs for such a small airforce.

But even global eye data is now leaked online making Pakistan's dilemma more accute.

Is J10 for porkies confirmed though?
Only if Chinese could master WS 10 engine properly...

Either Russian have some kind of blockhead in its export thanks to the Al 31 or Chinese are too ashamed to roll out a Russian powered aircraft after all higher than Himalayan claim regarding indigenous engine.

It's the reason that despite pakis wanting J10 since Musharraf days, it's not available for export.

Hey People from across the border,
--Don't worry we are very confident about the capabilities of JF-17.
--We know where and when to employ it.
--With Blk-3 we know where to counter your IAF's cutting Edge (Rafael ,Su-30(Super 30 Upgrade) & Mig-29 SMT).
--About LCA rest assured PAF is not worried unless we see substantial numbers. 8-14 token AC is never a serious consideration.
--We never underestimate our enemy's capabilities (IAF) and would love that you keep making fun of us and don't take us seriously, as this thinking has seeped into your military and political leadership's mind which will entail them to make faulty plans.
--Regarding Rafael preparation, we have been flying and evaluating Qatari jets for more than a year now. Unlike some people here, we respect our enemy's best weapon and have worked hard to create its counters.

The biggest issue with PAF AEWs is that the backbone (and tip of the spear) of their fighter fleet, the F-16, cannot talk with their Chinese ZDK-03s. That's why they will always need to maintain a fleet of Western AEWs like Erieye otherwise the F16s will lose the ability to take advantage of these force-multipliers.

Because of the United States, the F16 can not be linked to the Chinese AWACS, need to buy AWACS for the F16, and then through third-party links.

The 4 Chinese ZDK-03 is being used by Navy, PAF has around 8 Eeriye AEW&C AC , they are more than enough for AF consumption, it amuses me to see the igronance of some people here, Mirages, F-7 both have italian radars( Grifo M & Grifo 7 and can communicate through link 16 with Eeriye, F-16 does the same. JF-17 uses link 17 , also connected to Erieye via Data loop.
