So, Pakistan finally decided to go with Chinese avoionics. Chinese avionics will keep the price of JF17 down.

This plane will probably never make it to the production phase no engine, radar, chinese avionics and all of these things will prevent it from ever becoming a world class warplane, by the time these things are solved and a three and a half generation plane is finally made the world will have moved on to completely new platforms.

I think JF-17 is great plane if they want to fight Talibs. In the mean time, everybody would be deep down in early 5th Gen.

But even chinese rejected that rite. Why is PAF running behind this like anything?
Wrong. China never rejected it. Why would any country opt for a fighter plane of lower generation than what its airforce is operating if their is no technical and financial constrains. From the day one Jf-17 was not the requirement of chinese airforce. Initially Jf-17 was the experimental fighterplane on which China was working in order to develop more advanced ones, once the Pakistan showed interest and invested, they developed for them.

Reason why China developed this plane?
So as to gain Knowledge and experience and money by selling it to Pakistan and other conutries if possible.

Don't underestimate it, may be its not an 4th generation fighterplane but still its good and according to the requirements of Pakistan airforce both technically and economically.

As far as operating 5th generation planes is considered, not even more than 10 countries (USA, Russia, India and other probables are France, China, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy if you don't consider JSF as truely 5th gen. fighterplane) will be operating a 5th generation fighterplanes out of total 198 countries of the whole world even after two decades. And if you consider JSF as 5th gen then may be 20 to 25 countries, that means less than 15%.

Who said F-35 isn't a 5th gen?
You set your own standards in naming these planes?

UchihaCG ji,
I said if you don't consider JSF as truely 5th gen. fighterplane b'coz many countries had reduced their numbers + cost of development is constantly increasing + even few countries took their hands off from this project, so unless and until JSF becomes a reality we can not say that JSF ia a 5th gen aircraft. Same is true about PAK FA.

For your kind information even if I want I can't set standards for aircrafts b'coz their if no fixed set of standards for classifying them as 4th or 5th generation, its not like Euro III or Euro IV which has given set of fixed parameters, every country has its own way of classifying these crafts, take the example of China.

Pakistan launches homemade JF-17 jet

Pakistan launches homemade JF-17 jet

Pakistan has announced plans to begin production of avionics and related gadgets for the Sino-Pak JF-17 Thunder fighter jet.

The launch, announced at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra, outside Islamabad, is being billed as a vital move for making the country's air force "self-reliant."

"A strong air force is essential for our nation's survival," said Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman at the ceremonial launch. "Self-reliance for the Pakistani air force is an important factor and this ... is an important step in this direction."

To date, the bulk of avionics made in Pakistan have been manufactured as part of joint ventures with foreign companies. In the past, these have included Selex Galileo radars produced for the air force's fleet of Mirage III and F-7P Fishbed fighters.

On the occasion of the presentation and speaking at the Kamra manufacturing plant, Air Marshal Farhat Hussain Khan also presented an appraisal of JF-17 avionics program activities. These include four indigenously designed and developed avionics systems currently being developed at the Kamra Avionics and Radar Factory, Sify News reported.

Khan said the production scope "would be progressively broadened" to include the creation of a complete JF-17 avionics suite at the complex.

Neither Khan nor other Pakistani military officials elaborated on the plans.

Defense News reported, however, that "at least two of the domestically designed and produced systems include a head-up display and a weapons and mission management computer."

It said previous avionics projects had included a radar honing system for the 1960s F-104 combat aircraft; IRST pod and modifications to the GEC 956 head-up display and, most recently, the weapon aiming system for the F-7P jet in the 1990s.

Originally known as Super 7, the JF-17 Thunder was developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corp. under a joint venture between China and Pakistan, Sify News reported.

It said that the Pakistani air force was set to acquire 150 JF-17s but China's final order -- anticipated at 250 -- would hinge on the final evaluation of the fighter jet.

Military experts assess Pakistan's move into domestic avionics production as an economically viable decision after ill-fated attempts in the past.

By some accounts, the JF-17 is gaining popular demand. As many as 17 nations have placed orders while Pakistan is considering deploying the aircraft in strategic parts of the country. Exports have also surged for the K-8 fighter, which is jointly designed and produced with China.

"China brought in its production facilities while Pakistan brought in ideas, design from its invaluable experience using Western planes like Mirages and F-16s," Ruppe News reported. "It was a perfect symbiosis."

Wow! I usually skip Farnborough and all the rest as Bourget has the same participants. It might be worth a look to see the JF-17.

You have laid a very good point. People always tend to ignore such core design characteristics for an aircraft. We shou
ld have both core individual components and components as a group compaired for two aircraft.
Man, you really did a good job. I am impressed, +10 from me.

It is good that they are too obsessed with the Junk fighter, when in combat PAF and its people with released that it is not what it has been claim and compared with. Pakistani always argue with good radar and BVR it will take on any fighter (MKI) if that would have been true the same could have made glider or propeller driven WW-I aircraft with BVR and good radar even cheaper alternative.

Without the RDY-3 and MICA missiles, the JF-17 is nothing but a blunder. Doesn't look like PAF is ever going to get it and they have already started production with Chinese avionics and the old Grifo-S7 radars they already license assemble. The Thunder Blunder is little more capable than the F-7s they are replacing.

It means our LCA will be far more capable then JF17 . Bad choice by Pakistanis.

Excellent article Fulcrum. You have punched many holes in the, joke of a fighter, JF-17's capabilities =heheh. Pakistani have larger egos owing to their inferiority complex to Indians in many aspects and they would like to massage such egos by making outlandish claims to hyphenate themselves to India but none of their claims stand the scrutiny =xD. Let them be in their own cuckoo land, which will come crashing down when it faces Su-30MKIs of IAF.

Expecting more such articles from you.

JF-17 was never a competition for LCA :). LCA is completely in a different league despite it being in Initial operating conditions while JF-17 has been operating for couple of years. Still, there is no clarity as to what avionics, missiles, radars will go into JF-17, that's how hopeless condition it is in.
