@aschauhan, reams have been written on this topic. However a factual picture is hard to get.

My gut feeling is that LCA Tejas will prove better than JF-17 in both air-air and air-ground missions.

So gut feeling is on what basis? For now, jf-17 is way ahead as the plane is in service and can launch weapons with precision. Even has an export customer.

tejas got avionics of su30mki program which is may be superior in asia...... And just wait for 6 months it will achieve foc.... And it will be to its full power.

The Ministry of Defense and Urban Development of Sri Lanka has confirmed the country's air force is set to purchase six China-made JF-17 planes,local media reported Monday.

These deal is likely to be finalized in 2013, but no specific date has been given.

The JF-17 (Thunder), co-developed by Pakistan Air Force and China Aero Technology Import & Export Cooperation (CATIC), is an all weather, multi-role, light combat aircraft.

JF-17 vs LCA would be unfair to JF-17 in more ways than one. But as is the situation, JF-17 is better placed to serve the needs of uncomplicated forces of smaller countries.

LCA may be too much for them unless we also give a sovereign guarantee that the LCAs exported will be serviced properly and upgrade path is stated clearly. If these things are done then the LCA becomes a much better bet for the smaller countries. Much much better than JF-17 whatever block.

JF-17 is an relatively safe growth path for airforces that do not have to face pressing challenges to their countries like Sri Lanka or Bangladesh - not like India, a country that has never invaded anybody in its history, is going to invade them.

For India however, if this is true, then this should be a reminder about who/what/how we are today facing a situation that rank outsiders and strangers are supplying arms to people who have no threat from us, but we cannot. The Chinese should be thanking the IAF for this sale.

SL to purchase new fighter-jets?

Despite foreign media reports that claim Sri Lanka will be the first foreign buyer of the multi-role combat aircraft JF-17 Thunder, Sri Lanka Air Force says no decision has been made yet with regard to the procurement of the fighter jet.

Air Force Spokesperson, Wing Commander Gihan Senevirathne speaking to Daily Mirror said although both Pakistan and China have indicated the availability of the fighter jet and proposals have been submitted on the availability of the aircrafts, SLA has not made any decision on purchasing them.

Taiwan based China Times group news website ‘Want China Times’ however reports Sri Lanka would be the first foreign country to acquire the aircraft also known as the ‘Fierce Dragon’ or FC1-Xiaolong. This was following a claim made at the 51st Paris Airshow by PAF Sales and Marketing Chairman, Air Commodore Khalid Mahmood that ‘a contract has been signed with an Asian country’, which was reported in Pakistan-based new website 92NewsHD last week.

'Want China Times' further notes that an order has been made for about 18 – 24 aircrafts and adds the speculations of Sri Lanka procuring the fighter jet emerged, when a photo of an office of a SLA Commander allegedly revealed a scale model of the JF-17 Thunder. It also quotes Pakistan Air Force stating the delivery of the aircraft to Sri Lanka would commence in 2017.

The JF-17 Thunder is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation of China. It is deployed for aerial reconnaissance, ground attack and aircraft interception. Its designation ‘JF-17’ by Pakistan is short for ‘Joint Fighter-17’ and its alias ‘FC-1 Xiaolong’ in Chinese stands for ‘Fighter China-1 Fierce Dragon’. (Lakna Paranamanna)

and what if JF-17 was being developed in india by HAL, and what would have been the IAF reasons on this to scrap JF-17 !!!

Well you get what you pay for. JF-17 is not necessarily a bad aircraft its just not good enough for nations with money. It is the cheapest 4th gen out there and will eventually find buyers.
