A Japanese machine has become the fastest supercomputer in the world, making calculations three times faster than a Chinese rival, its developers said Monday.

The K Computer, developed by Fujitsu and the state-funded RIKEN institute of physical and chemical research, has achieved 8.162 quadrillion calculations per second (petaflops), they said. One quadrillion is made up of a thousand trillions.

It overtook China's Tianhe-1A of the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, which became the world No. 1 in November and is capable of operating at 2.6 petaflops.

The K Computer's performance was recognized by the authoritative biannual Top 500 List of Supercomputers released Monday at the 2011 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a statement.

This has been the first Japanese supercomputer to claim the top spot since 2004. NEC's Earth Simulator reigned supreme from June 2002 to November 2004.

The machine is still being configured and has been assembled since October 2010 at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Kobe, western Japan. It is targeted to be completed by June 2012, the statement said.

It is made up of 672 computer cabinets equipped with a current total of 68,544 CPUs, Fujitsu and RIKEN said.

Japan's K supercomputer is now the world's fastest | bit-tech.net

Japan's K supercomputer is now the world's fastest
Published on 20th June 2011 by Antony Leather

Good CPU got from Sun which owned by oracle now.

K is the world's fastest ever supercomputer, and by quite a considerable margin.
Japan has just overtaken China on the TOP500 leaderboard of the world's fastest supercomputers. The country's latest machine, simply called K, is over three times as fast as China's Tianhe-1A, which claimed the previous top spot in October last year.

K is capable of processing a staggering 8.2 petaflops, while Tianhe-1A churns out a comparatively ordinary 2.507 petaflops. Tianhe-1A in turn took the top spot from the XT5 Jaguar at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee, which is rated at 1.75 petaflops and still holds third place.

In terms of hardware, K has 548,352 2GHz SPARC64 VIIIfx cores (in 68,544 eight-core chip packages) spread out over 672 cabinets, and the whole supercomputer has a colossal power draw of 9,898kW. This figure eclipses the power draw of any other supercomputer on the June 2011 Top500 list by a large margin.

Speaking to the New York Times, Professor Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, who runs the Top500 list, claimed that K's performance is the equivalent of around one million linked desktop computers.

According to the site, K also looks set to break more records in the coming months, with the owners apparently planning to raise the number of cabinets to 800 from 672. It already costs £6.2 million to run annually and uses enough electricity to power 10,000 average homes. The machine was built by Fujitsu, and is situated at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Kobe.

Do you wish you could get your hands on 8.2 petaflops of processing power? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I'm sure that this might have riled up Chinese establishment which always strives for biggest, largest, fastest things. Well done, Japs.

Congratulations Japan! Once again Japan proves herself as one of the few truely technologically advanced nations on earth, nothing surprising here. At same time congratulations to China as well for taking the 2nd overall place among all nations in high-performance computing. This is truely a remarkable achievement for the the East Asians.

There is nothing wrong with striving for the biggest, fattest, largest things, but there must be something wrong with people who doesn't want to do that.

Japanese want to be the best, that is why they now build the fattest supercomputer. I admire Japanese for their aspiration and determination to be the best, we Chinese should learn that from them. And I despise people who can do nothing but whinning!

I said it before and got rebuffed. Indians have a natural grudge against east asians. On the surface they hate only the Chinese, but deep down they have a problem with all east asians who are paler, smarter, wealthier, pysically stronger, and most importantly of them all, have more respect from the whites. It's sad but true.

No,
we just have a 'natural grudge' against Chinese ;) and nothing against others.

As far as the Japanese are concerned most Indians would have a lot of respect about their society especially their work culture.

Look at PRC and India, I am not interested in others, India has higher poverty levels and these other countries have better economies that means better nutrition. Indian economy is recently improving and people are starting to become better nourished

China (PRC) 164.8 cm (5' 4.9") 154.5 cm (5' 0.8")
India 165.3 cm (5' 5") 165.3 cm (5' 5")

The word 'Japs' is used a lot in Hollywood and people seeing a lot of Hollywood movies tend to use the same without even knowing they are offensive. Its no different from how urbanized younger generation in India call each others as 'dudes', because of the influence from US movies and serials. So as you can see there is no hatred towards Japanese.

On the contrary, your tirade about how the East Asians are 'stronger and more respected by the White' shows the mentality of the Chinese and how you guys (Chinese) look up for approval from the Whites to judge your own success.

Now you can start ur ranting......earlier when u failed on chinese plank, hence now you include east Asians to prove further ur propaganda, no Doubrt whole of East Asia HATES China.....Do u even realize the type of relation we have with Taiwan, Tibetans, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines et al compared with China?:)

No takers here for your inferiority complex Mr Paler LOL

Secondly, every country in the east is different from china and the people are amazing and completely diff from chinese.......I dont know how much wealthier or stronger they are, however they are very nice people.

LOL hahahahha I still don't understand how slave/labor class chinese are wealthier and how come being PALE is a thing to be proud of, as if all the people in the east are pale?? Hhahahahhaha :D
