Japan assures China it will stay out of Arunachal projects : World, News - India Today

Responding to reports in India which said the Border Roads Organization (BRO) had given 'strategic' projects to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) along the China border, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the Japanese government had made clear that it would not involve itself in projects in 'disputed areas' between India and China. Officials clarified this included Arunachal Pradesh, which China has territorial claims on.

"China has noted the report and has checked with the capable authorities," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei told reporters, in response to a question on the issue raised by an official Chinese media outlet at a regular press briefing.

"The Japanese side has clarified that its cooperation with India is not in disputed areas between China and India," Hong said.

Arunachal shouldnt be a problem, because it isnt disputed, it's a part of India.

Also, I see this is Chinese foreign minister talking on behalf of Japan?

There is no embargo in the use of Japanese technology and equipment.

Japan in any case is now under recession and so has to be prudent.

BEIJING: Japan has told China that its plans to build 2,000 kms of "strategic road" in India's North-East do not come under the disputed areas along the Sino-India border, a senior Chinese official said today.

"China has noted such reports and checked with capable authorities," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing here today answering a question about reports that Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) will build 2,000 km "strategic road" in the "disputed" Eastern part of China-India boundary.
Japan never backed down. it said to China in a nice tone that the road is getting built in Indias own territory and asked CHina to scoot.
@t_co posted an article that kinda make it look like JAPAN backed off cuz China said so.

I would say its usual for countries to check with each other.

This appears to be diplomatic tussle, as China tries to expand Japan hugs India.

I dont think Japan is afraid !!
Japan never had a consistent and clear foreign policy, that is why despite all it's "free doles" none in the developing world takes Japan seriously. This forward-backward policy is going to harm Japan and no other country.

On the contrary Japanese foreign policy is quite consistent, to maximize its own gains at minimal costs!

Now Japan's economy is in recession, to which India is of little help. C-J-K need to warm each other up!

Japan, due to its economic woes, will probably toe the PRC line.

Sorry folks, Japan will look out for its own interests, as it always has done in the past. Despite being an ally of the US, it is negotiating a pipeline deal with Russia.

India needs to strengthen itself internally first. I think Modi is attempting to make the right moves. Unless India is stronger and closer to PRC, it will be difficult for India to influence other countries.

Actually, Japan recognizes Arunachal as disputed territory, per its signed deference to UN conventions and UNSC on disputed territory (which always include Arunachal due to China's P5 seat). Hence, Japan's note to the Chinese side means its road construction companies will stay out of Arunachal.

Could you explain this a little more.

At this moment, it appears ridiculous.

What UN convention?

Tibet could be such a country under UN convention because the Head of Tibet, Dalai Lama contests the Chinese Occupation. There is no such complaints from Arunachal, more so there has been election to indicate the will of the people, while nothing of the sort happens in China, let alone Tibet.
