MOSCOW – The Russian Krylov State Research Center has developed a helicopter carrier project to replace the Mistral-class warships that were not delivered by France, a high-ranking official in the Russian military industrial complex said Friday.
“The Russian Krylov State Research Center has developed an alternative to the Mistral project of a helicopter carrier, called the Lavina, with a water displacement of 24,000 tons, which is even larger than the French-made ship [of 21,000 tons],” the official said at the Army-2015 military expo outside Moscow.

According to the official, the new warship is a semi-trimaran with capabilities to sail 5,000 miles at 18 knots without service calls and a maximum speed of 22 knots. The vessel will carry 320 crewmembers and can take on an additional 500 troops or 50 armored vehicles.

Under the $1.5 billion warship contract, signed in 2011, France agreed to sell two Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia but the handover was suspended as Paris expressed disapproval of Moscow's alleged interference in the Ukrainian crisis. Russia has repeatedly denied its involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
In late May, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Military Industrial Complex Oleg Bochkaryov said that Russia planned to build its own Mistral-class helicopter carriers.
On Thursday, the director of the department of military technical cooperation, Alexei Diky, said France had handed over to Russia some technology in large-block assembly for the construction of Mistral-class helicopter carriers.

How long they "Admiral Gorshkov "Vikramāditya ( भा नौ पो विकरमादितय)" altered? This is the answer to the question about Russian ambitions.

If they'd put any of that money or effort on Pak FA and the development of AL41, it'd be much better. Russia is repeating the same mistake which Soviet did, their economy won't allow them to finish these unnecessary white elephant projects.

Where is this ship being planned to be built? If Russia wants to build larger ships, it needs to take control of Nikolayev, the birthplace of the Gorshkov. Gorshkov was modified at Severodvinsk, but it is unclear how well equipped that facility is to build a large ship from ground up.

The characteristics of the project 'Lavina' are:

Length about 218 m (estimated)

Displacement 24,000 t

Maximum speed 22 knots

Reach 5,000 miles at 18 knots

Crew 320 people

The transport capacity will be:

500 marines

16 helicopters Kamov Ka-27 or Ka-52K

50 vehicles

6 ships landing project 11770
6 boats project 03160

The project 'Lavina' is in the category of the Mistral.

From the looks of it, Lavina looks much more suave than the blunt looking Mistral. France will have to pay Russia back the money it has already received for the Mistral, plus damages. It is good that Russia will build the Lavina in Russia, thus generating jobs, and developing new knowhow.

I don't think the French were wise to renege on a contract they have already signed.

He-he, this theme is close to me.
1. Krylov State Research Center is not the "Design Bureau". They research concept only.
Real ship can be very different.
2. Now Nevskoe Design Bureau started designing LPD-class. Named "Preeboy"

3. It is wide choice where to build. All shipyards are now actively being upgraded, including for the big ships. For example: http://sdelanounas.ru/blogs/53037/
Problem is shortage of workers.

Unfortunately, all our pipelines and railroads are now redirected to avoid Ukraine territory, which could indicate that it is considered to remain a grey zone for decades.

P.S. Navy budget is already significantly cut, no carriers are expected to be laid down in the near future.

Bla-bla-bla Now Russia has stopped construction of its frigates. Because the turbine for them bought in Nikolaev. The Russian Defense Ministry officially announced that the first aircraft carrier to be built only in 2025.

Your suicidal engine producers made their input too.

These engines have not yet been tested. Of course, Russia is able to make its counterpart. However, it is necessary to test much time. Therefore, the implementation of more ambitious Project Types in the Russian shipbuilding need 7-10 years.

Geographically, Russia does not need helicopter carriers and aircraft carriers. After 7 years of age may become a question of the usefulness of such a project.

The construction of the finished project will take 3-4 years, but now not yet have some important parts, for example - AEW&C/AWACS aircraft, new deck aircraft.

You are not right. There is a great justified necessity for such this ships.

LOL, design is straight from the sixties... no azipod, no internal bay for landing crafts. This is like changing Peugeot Coupe to UAZ. ;). 60 years old concept even before the construction starts. This kind of project could have only been made in USSR...hey wait...

Regarding the price of the new ship.. if Government gives 1bn $ for the project, by general rule 500 million goes to corruption, 200 million to general incompetence and for the final product 300 million. What kind of ship can you have for 300 million?

I repeat: Russia a very long time aircraft cruiser into an aircraft carrier. 3-4 years... It's not a frigate.
