These lockdowns & resultant deep hibernation of ISRO is the best example as to why you cannot & should not depend on ISRO to deliver military needs. Satellites that represent crucial strategic capabilities have been delayed indefinitely.

We badly need DSA and we needed them yesterday.

Imagine if Armed Forces stopped conducting patrols & operations because they're scared of COVID. Space is as important a domain of warfare & intelligence today as the Air was in WW2.

And even during 1st wave which was relatively mild, ISRO was perhaps the only major space agency in the world who completely shut off all launch operations for almost whole year. NASA/ULA, SpaceX, Roscosmos, ESA, CNSA, JAXA, Israelis & even f@cking Iranians were conducting launches but not ISRO.

They're management is pathetic, frankly speaking. They are in need of serious overhaul especially on executive level. I cannot imagine us putting humans in space with this type of 'we are not competing with anyone' mentality & scientists sitting in management positions on which they have no expertise. Sometimes can't help but think even IAS sarkari babus could do a better job at the executive level in ISRO.
Then govt should increase their budget otherwise its mindless complaining....this is govt lacking some level of foresight and crisis planning. These situations should have been addressed like war plans and drilled many times a year but we have not heard any sort of multi agency collaboration drills like that....

Actually shit went deep since they chose fragile vendors. DoS tried to create an ecosystem like US in 1980s to increase production suddenly but since India has small roadside factories and not large corporates like US, they weren't able to negotiate to get resources to operate in situation.

As told before, India is just another third world nation like Pakistan and Bangladesh in terms of situation. In our case, a large number of farms and textile get replaced by metal processing, pharmaceutical and aerospace factories. But after all, capital is low and hence quality is.
Dude our condition is way better than kangladesh and porkistan where hi tech industry is non existent plz don't insult the hard work of our scientists by comparing with these countries. Our case is rather unique when it comes to technological advancement no other country has been able to achieve what we have achieved with current level.

I understand that we lack in manufacturing sector (thanks to Congress) but we are making huge strides ,every year lot of hi tech factories are being set up within a decade we will have robust supply chain.

That's what I said, we are just a high-tech version of low income countries and our economic growth to is just because of the fact technologies are yet to reach their saturation prices.

See western countries will never take india in first world category its in their soul . So dont fight for that. We are already technology advance nation otherwise u cant invent so much medicine/vaccine of corona virus quickly.

Good news of course, but wasn't this on schedule? It's the other things like Chandrayaan-3 and the manned mission, that are going to be delayed significantly.

By being a "first world" country, I'd mean becoming a rich and efficient power and not being a European nation.

If you have worked in industrial sector, you would know that Asians suck in quality and good engineering practices, Russia to China to India, it gets worse. But in Japan, they have a culture of efficiency.

Probably agencies in US, Russia and China themselves were having an ecosystem and supply chains while here in India, we are too integrated and dependent upon each others. Not just large companies, roadside factories and single room workshops too are lifeline of India's industrial economy.

Industrialized! but in the style of "third world".
That is only partially true. More importantly, there are quite a lot industrial departments are terribly outdated or even in non-existence in India.
We are global company of daily family usage stuffs, not high-tech. Even before being hit by second wave of Covid, our Indian factory can only run on 50% capacity even though our orders are accumulating. Why? Because our Indian suppliers are relying on imported machines, components, sub-ingredients to manufacture. When the world transportation is in trouble, they have to slow down or even shut down.

That is not true.

Russia has always been a special case: according to her demographic, climate and geographic condition, she shouldn't develop civilian industries at all. Besides, over past 100 years, Russia was either in the war or preparing for the war in most of times, you can't expect them to focus on quality improvement.

Japan, no, they didn't have a culture of efficiency, no at least before 1960s. Japan's reputation is the result of long time systematic improvement. Before 1945, Japan's industrial products were only better than those of Asian countries, which didn't exist at all. Until 1970s, the world impression of Japan products were still "cheap price and cheap quality". Sounds familiar? :)

China and India? They are still in the middle of industrialization. Just like our factories in these 2 countries, the quality are not on par with western counterpart, but they are getting better day by day.

Considering the facts at the time on the ground, they did not. It was crucial time and we failed to play power politics inspite of having bigger and better economy than Chinese.
Trust me, you definitely don't want your government to play the power game like Chinese did in that period.
Think about that: investing over 50% of government budget in military, R&D, industrialization whim minimizing people's living standard for 30 years. I don't think any democratic government can survive with this kind of extreme policies.

Here in pressure part fabrication, more of our problem has been logistics supplies than imported stuff. We aren't getting metal from Maharashtra and orders have been accumulating as well as low on supply of argon and oxygen.
We have replaced Chinese vendors with Indian ones though for most of our tools, tackles and machines.

Alloy steel grades are still imported from China and Japan though.

Operations hit, but Isro still hopes for December launch
Sources in Isro said that even before the lockdown they were working alternative days to ensure physical distancing, but the lockdowns have resulted in a work-fromhome scenario, which enables only a small percentage of the work to be done.
BENGALURU: Restrictions and lockdowns across multiple states, especially in Karnataka and Kerala, due to the second Covid wave have hit operations at Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).
The space agency had multiple missions planned for this year: Three earth observation satellites — one for ocean studies, one remote sensing satellite, a commercial launch, one navigation satellite, a science satellite to study the Sun (Aditya-L1), two SSLV (small satellite launch vehicle) missions and the Gaganyaan uncrewed mission.
While Aditya will not happen this year, lockdowns will impact timelines of the other missions. However, Isro, which has dedicated most of its resources to ensure the uncrewed mission takes off this year as announced in the Union budget, is still hopeful of a December launch.
Sources in Isro told TOI that even before the lockdown they were working alternative days to ensure physical distancing, but the lockdowns have resulted in a work-fromhome scenario, which enables only a small percentage of the work to be done.
“It [lockdown] certainly will have an impact. While most of the lab and floor work including systems testing are affected, we have been working remotely on design, review and other processes. Work has not stopped fully. However, industries we partner with have stopped work,” Isro chairman K Sivan said.
On whether this will delay the uncrewed mission, he said, it can only be known once the lockdown is lifted.
“It will be premature to say anything now. We are looking at launching the uncrewed mission by December this year. If industries can turn around and deliver the systems and parts we need, it will be possible. Our partners have done this in the past, but we can only review the situation later,” Sivan added.
As reported by TOI earlier, the space agency in April had decided that it may even go ahead with the uncrewed mission without the indigenous data relay satellite and some aspects of the human rating of the systems, even as it works to ensure they are ready much ahead of the launch of humans.
Even the Gaganyaan Advisory Council (GAC) that met in the last week of March had advised Isro not to delay the uncrewed mission.
The data relay satellites — Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS) — are in the 2,000kg class that will need the GSLV for their launch into GEO. As per Isro’s plans, Gaganyaan will be the first beneficiary of the IDRSS, which will be later also used for space-to-space tracking and communication of all space assets.

Karan Kamble

4-5 minutes

A laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and a relatively recent Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centre have come together to conduct special tests for India’s landmark Gaganyaan mission.
DRDO’s Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Centre (HSFC) via video conference on 31 March this year.
