PSLV-C35 Successfully Launches Eight Satellites into Two Different Orbits in a Single Flight
In its thirty seventh flight (PSLV-C35), ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle successfully launched the 371 kg SCATSAT-1 Satellite along with seven co-passenger satellites today morning (September 26, 2016) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. This is the thirty sixth consecutively successful mission of PSLV. The total weight of all the eight satellites carried on-board PSLV-C35 was 675 kg. PSLV-C35 is the first PSLV mission to launch satellites carried onboard into two different orbits. This PSLV mission was the longest of the PSLV missions conducted till date and was completed in 2 hours 15 minutes and 33 seconds after lift-off.
After PSLV-C35 lift-off at 0912 hrs (9:12 am) IST from the First Launch Pad with the ignition of the first stage, the subsequent important flight events, namely, strap-on ignitions and separations, first stage separation, second stage ignition, payload fairing separation, second stage separation, third stage ignition and separation, fourth stage ignition and cut-off, took place as planned. After a flight of 16 minutes 56 seconds, the vehicle achieved a polar Sun Synchronous Orbit of 724 km inclined at an angle of 98.1 degree to the equator (very close to the intended orbit) and 37 seconds later the primary satellite SCATSAT-1 was separated from the PSLV fourth stage.
After separation, the two solar arrays of SCATSAT-1 satellite were deployed automatically and ISRO's Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore took over the control of the satellite. In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration following which it will begin to provide weather related services using its scatterometer payload. The data sent by SCATSAT-1 satellite will help provide weather forecasting services to user communities through the generation of wind vector products as well as cyclone detection and tracking.
After the successful separation of SCATSAT-1, the PSLV-C35 mission continued. Still carrying the seven co-passenger satellites, the fourth stage of PSLV coasted over the South polar region and then started ascending towards the Northern hemisphere. A safe distance between the orbiting SCATSAT-1 and PSLV-C35 fourth stage was maintained by suitably manoeuvring the stage.
At 1 hour 22 minutes and 38 seconds after lift-off as the fourth stage was in the North polar region, the two engines of PSLV fourth stage were reignited and fired for 20 seconds. As a result of this, it entered into an elliptical orbit measuring 725 km on one side of the Earth and 670 km on the other.
And 50 minutes later, as the PSLV fourth stage was again coasting near the south pole, its engines were fired for another 20 seconds. This second firing made the fourth stage to enter into a circular orbit of 669 km height inclined at an angle of 98.2 degree to the equator.
37 seconds later, the Dual Launch Adapter was successfully separated from the PSLV-C35 fourth stage. 30 seconds after this event, ALSAT-1N was the first co-passenger satellite to be separated successfully. Following this, the NLS-19, PRATHAM, PISAT, ALSAT-1B, ALSAT-2B, and Pathfinder-1 were separated from the PSLV fourth stage in a predetermined sequence thereby successfully completing PSLV-C35 mission.
Of the seven co-passenger satellites carried by PSLV-C35, two – PRATHAM weighing 10 kg and PISAT weighing 5.25 kg – are University/Academic institute satellites and were built with the involvement of students from IIT-Bombay and PES University, Bangalore and its consortium, respectively.
The remaining five co-passenger satellites were international customer satellites from Algeria (three – ALSAT-1B, ALSAT-2B and ALSAT-1N), Canada (one- NLS-19) and the United States (one – Pathfinder-1).
With today’s launch, the PSLV’s capability to launch satellites into two different orbits has been successfully demonstrated. The total number of satellites launched by India’s workhorse launch vehicle PSLV has now reached 121, of which 42 are Indian and the remaining 79are from abroad.

Story of the Week - Indian Space Research Organization
SCATSAT-1 – Satellite for Weather Forecasting, Cyclone Detection and Tracking

Global wind data, which is very crucial for cyclone detection and weather forecasting applications, was gathered by Scatterometer instrument flown as one of the payloads in OCEANSAT- 2 satellite. This data was utilised by national and international users and proved to be a very important tool for oceanographic studies. SCATSAT-1 is the continuity mission for Scatterometer payload carried by the earlier Oceansat-2 satellite.
The magnitude and direction of the wind vector at the ocean surface is a key parameter for weather prediction as well as detection and tracking of cyclones. The objectives of SCATSAT-1 are to facilitate the weather forecasting services to the user communities through the generation of wind vector products. The Ku-band Scatterometer payload carried by SCATSAT-1 has enhanced features compared to the similar one carried by Oceansat-2 launched in 2009.
SCATSAT-1 is built around ISRO’s small satellite ‘IMS-2 BUS’ and the mass of the spacecraft is 371 kilograms. The spacecraft will work in sun synchronous orbit of 720 km. altitude with an inclination of 98.1 deg. This will be a polar orbiting satellite and will take two days to cover the entire globe. The expected life span of the satellite is 5 years with non-stop 24 X 7 all weather operations. Wind speed is measured in the range of 3m/s to 30m/s and 0-360 deg directions. Finally wind vector grids of 25kms*25kms over oceans will be generated for the entire globe.
The satellite is carrying a Ku-band Scanning Scatterometer radar instrument operating at 13.515 GHz similar to the instrument flown onboard Oceansat-2. The payload instrument will be a vital tool globally used to study wind patterns above the ocean, air-sea interactions, ocean circulation and their overall effects on weather patterns. Climate quality data is expected to be obtained from this spacecraft to provide accurate knowledge regarding Himalayan ice formation and melting, cyclones formation near Indian coastal line, Greenland ice melting, etc.,
Scatterometer operates on the principle of radar. When the radar radiates energy pulses towards the ocean’s surface, a backscatter effect is produced due to interaction between electromagnetic waves and sea surface waves, which is function of speed and direction of surface winds over the oceans.
This process of receiving back-scattered signal is carried out while conically scanning or rotating the antenna along with the motion of the satellite giving a swath of 1400 km. The collected data is processed onboard to generate estimate of backscattered power/signals and stored on a data recorder. This recorded data is then transmitted to ground station which is converted into wind vectors for the global user.
These wind vectors will help meteorologists in accurately predict the cyclone formation, its movement and estimated landfall. It may be recalled that Ocean wind vectors data helped in accurately predicting cyclone ‘Phailin’ in the Odisha coast in 2013, which helped in mitigation and saving of mankind and livestock.
SCATSAT-1 is a global mission and data generated from the Scatterometer, developed by ISRO will also be utilised by the American space agency NASA and European Space Agency organisation, EUMETSAT to provide global weather data to all those involved in weather studies and global climate change studies.

ISRO has launched 79 satellites for 21 countries, A S Kiran Kumar said.
SRIHARIKOTA: With today's successful launch of eight satellites, including India's SCATSAT-1, space agency ISRO is focusing on more launches including that of a communication satellite from French Guiana next month.
"Today's multi-orbit mission has proved PSLV's ability and talks are already on with Algeria for more launches," ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar told reporters.
Besides SCATSAT-1, the PSLV C-35 had injected two Indian university satellites, PRATHAM and PISAT, three from Algeria-- ALSAT-1B, ALSAT-2B and ALSAT-1N and one each from the US and Canada--Pathfinder-1 and NLS-19, respectively, in different orbits.
ISRO has launched 79 satellites for 21 countries, he said.
The space agency's forthcoming launches include that of communication satellite GSAT 18 from French Guiana next month even as GSLV Mk III is planned to be launched by the year end.
Resourcsesat 2A is scheduled to be launched in November this year, he said.
Kumar also batted for more industry participation in ISRO's endeavour to further boost commercial launches for foreign vendors.
When asked about ISRO's orderbook, Antrix corporation Chairman and Managing Director S Rakesh said it was about Rs 280 crore for the next 2-3 years.
Antrix revenue was Rs 1,790 crore during the year and Rs 1,717 crore in the previous year.
He said the company was growing and looking to consolidate on ISRO's performance to generate more revenue.
Work was on on other satellites including Chandrayaan 2 and SAARC satellite, Kumar said even as he noted that Pakistan had opted out of the latter.
Some "issues" with Afghanistan and Bangladesh were "being sorted out," he added.
So, conclusion:
 1. GSAT-18 (on Ariane 5ECS) in October.
 2. PSLV C-37 in November.
 3. GSLV Mk3 D1 in December (schedule remains unchanged).

PSLV places 8 satellites in two orbits, scripts history

Scripting history, India on Monday successfully launched eight satellites into two different orbits through single flight PSLV-C35 rocket mission in its maiden attempt. The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) most trusted workhorse, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), in its 37th flight (PSLV-C35), carried and placed the 377 kg SCATSAT-1 and seven co-passenger satellites into polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).
The PSLV-C35 took off at 9.12 AM from the first launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota space port near here. This is 15th flight of PSLV in 'XL’ configuration (with the use of solid strap-on motors).
The manoeuvre
After a flight of 16 minutes 56 seconds, the vehicle achieved a polar SSO of 724 km inclined at an angle of 98.1 degree to the equator (very close to the intended orbit). About 37 seconds later, the primary satellite SCATSAT-1 was separated from the PSLV fourth stage.
Following the successful separation of SCATSAT-1, the PSLV-C35 mission continued and placed rest of the satellites in the required orbits. Accordingly, ALSAT-1 was the first co-passenger satellite to be separated successfully. Following this, rest of the satellites were separated from the PSLV fourth stage in a predetermined sequence, thereby successfully completing PSLV-C35 mission.
"Today (Monday) is a landmark day. Using PSLV rocket, we achieved the launch of eight satellites. The entire mission was completed very successfully,” ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar said.
This PSLV-C35 mission was the longest of the PSLV missions conducted till date and was completed in 2 hours 15 minutes and 33 seconds after lift-off. The co-passenger satellites are from Algeria, Canada and the US, as well as two satellites from Indian universities/ academic institutes. SCATSAT, which has a mission life of five years, will provide wind vector data products for weather forecast, cyclone detection and tracking services to the users.
The total number of satellites launched by PSLV has now reached 121, of which 42 are Indian and the remaining 79 are from abroad. This is the 36th consecutively successful mission of PSLV.
New orders
Expanding its commercial operations, the ISRO has bagged orders to launch various satellites to the tune of more than Rs 250 crore. "Our order book size for launching various foreign satellites is about Rs 280 crore,” Antrix Corporation CMD S Rakesh said on Monday. He said it would take more than two years to complete the current orders for launching satellites.
The Antrix Corporation is the commercial arm of ISRO. Stating that the company is looking at consolidating the performance and achievements of ISRO, he said the company closed last fiscal with a turnover of Rs 1,923 crore and is expected to close the current fiscal with a revenue of around Rs 2,000 crore.
"Discussions are on for getting more orders,” he added. ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar said authorities were in discussions with others for contract manufacturing of meteorological satellites. According to him, Indian meteorological satellites have excellent capabilities.

Mega launchers for ISRO soon
An advanced Indian mega space launcher that can deliver ten-tonne and heavier communication satellites to space and using a semi-cryogenic engine is likely to to power ISRO’s launchers by around 2018.
Pre-project work on what is called the SCE-200 began about four years back. "We plan to have an [semi-cryogenic] engine and stage capable of flight by the end of 2018 and try it on the GSLV-MkIII.

This would readily boost Mk-III's maximum lifting capability from 4,000 kg to 6,000 kg,” Dr K. Sivan, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre at Thiruvanthapuram, the lead centre for launch vehicle development, said.

Two years thereafter, around 2020, this will be enhanced to 15,000 kg by putting strap-ons in clusters — the stage where major European and U.S. launch providers already are.
Semi-cryo based rocket by 2018 and with recent trend of punctuality by ISRO, I think it's achievable.

great news.. good to see the GSLV MK3 capability can be enhanced to 8 tonnes from 4 tonnes by 2018 and 15 tonnes in 2020.. this is way more than expected.. @Indx TechStyle can have his mars rover and satellite dream..

are they talking about GSLV MK3 or some other rocket.. because thats a huge jump in capability..
8 toones in GTO means 12 tonnes in LEO and 15 tonnes in GTO means 21 tonnes(apprx) in LEO.. thats huge jump..

LOL, you forgot to highlight the awesome parts.:biggrin2:

I'm excited but even then, I got it too optimistic because a space agency usually do not attempt other vehicle without having a good launch frequency of biggest operational.

GSLV Mk3 was expected in 2009 but appeared in 2014.
Though, ISRO has plans, will be executed, I'm convinced for 2025 and optimistic about 2020.
Let's make rocketry great again.:first:
guys one question

any plan of isro of refueling a satellite in orbit
Yes, I have posted it few pages back.
Primary advantage will be to Deep Space Orbital Observatories like AstroSat (I meant successor of AstroSat like AstroSat -2 (2020) and XpoSat (2021).)
great news.. good to see the GSLV MK3 capability can be enhanced to 8 tonnes from 4 tonnes by 2018 and 15 tonnes in 2020.. this is way more than expected.. @Indx TechStyle can have his mars rover and satellite dream..
6 tonnes in 2018 and then, 15 tonnes in 2020.
Given thar standard size of heavy communication satellites remains in line of 5.2 to 5.8 tonnes, simply does not exceed 6 tonnes, there's no point in making 8 tonnes rocket. Instead better option would be to make at least 12 tonnes to GTO.

Wrong,
5 tonnes to GTO us usually upto 13 tonnes to LEO.
8 tonnes to GTO must have 18-19 tonnes to GTO (Japan's H-IIB for example).

10-12 tonnes to GTO is 20-25 tonnes to LEO

And 15 tonnes to GTO will be meaning at least 25-30 tonnes to LEO or up to 35 tonnes to LEO.
If you guys know, I have been reading about 35 tonnes capacity of Indian Rockets on many space reports, news and blogs etc.. Now, I realized where it referred to.

BTW,
15 tonnes to GTO in 2020 means we will be having world's largest operational rocket if SLS doesn't enter service.:peace:

it said just by adding strap-on , the capability will jump from 6 tonnes in 2018 to 15 tonnes in 2020..
2 years for adding and desinging strap-ons..?? why not do it in 2018 at once.. strap-ons should not be a big deal..??

from the abovee "the hindu link"

Dr. Sivan said, “The GSLV-MkIII that we plan to test in December has a core liquid fuel stage. When the semi-cryogenic engine gets ready, our plan is to replace the liquid stage with the SCE. We straightaway get six-tonne payload capability, two tonnes over what Mark III can give.
Subsequently the plan is to have a modular vehicle (earlier called the unifield launch vehicle) which allows variations suited to different payloads; this being done with the PSLV with its three versions.

For example, Dr. Sivan said: “We can have a bigger semicryogenic stage with clustered engines, similar to what SpawceX did using nine Merlin engines. We can then get a payload of 15 tonnes in the GTO.”
its clear ULV will be possible after 2020.. and it will be a derivative of the upgraded GSLV mk3 with bigger central semicryo stage & clustered engines like falcon..

if i am getting it right.. the sequence will be ..
in december - CE-25 will be mounted on GSLV MK3.. 4 tonnes- GTO..
in 2017 - few flights will be carried with this design..
in 2018 - the central liquid stage(vikas egnine) replaced with SCE which will boost it to 6 tonnes capability to GTO
then 2020-- add few strapons .. and this will transform GSLV MK3 to a beast capable of carrying 15 tonnes..
then transform it into ULV - for variable loads

As per my sources ULVs and HLVs must be based on design of LVM3.

So, yep for 6 tonnes, for 20 tonnes, LV may be bigger and bulkier or geometry may be modified.
