First glimpse of 'Vyommitra', the humanoid for Gaganyaan; it's a 'She'

TNN
Vyommitra
BENGALURU: With the first unmanned flight as part of the first human spaceflight programme (Gaganyaan) scheduled for later this year, here's the first glimpse of the humanoid that the Indian Space Research Organisation
(Isro) hopes to send before finally sending humans in 2022. And, while India is not sending women as part of Gaganyaan
, the humanoid — a robot — will be a "woman".Named 'Vyommitra
', " The TOI was the first to report that Isro had plans of sending such a humanoid in January 2019, and is now the first to introduce her.

“The humanoid is almost ready,” Isro chairman K Sivan had told TOI last year, adding: “...We want to make sure that this mission serves a purpose beyond displaying our ability to send humans and bring them back safely.”

He said that Isro will fly the humanoid in both the unmanned flights planned before the actual human spaceflight mission. “Our robot will be like a human, and be able to do whatever a man can do, although not as extensively as humans," Sivan had said.

"...We want to show that even the first flight will not go empty and also ensure that we utilise the opportunity in the maximum way. We have our own humanoid model that will be used,” he added

As we speak, the final four astronaut-elects for India’s first human spaceflight programme (Gaganyaan) will begin training in

Russia
.

While a lot of design work has been completed for Gaganyaan already, there will be several tests that will be done this year.

Doesn't look half bad. Given the limited resources, technology and time, this is the best that could be done.

it's better they would have asked from Russia than this laughing stock high school project. so sad to see we absolutely suck at robotics.

very disappointing  could have made better as usual typical work from PSU.

You're looking for functionality vis-a-vis serving the specific purpose here... not if she can laugh, or her AI come up with a snarky reply.

Congratulations to all who said " am very disappointed and blah balh", u idiots its flight control robot not ai powered chat bot, the bot ment for withstanding high g load zero gravity and other parameter where it have to perform all fight task it will be integrated with flight mission computer like a physical auto pilot ,it don't need looks or even a face, in my university we also develop robot's but as u said it all looks gud than this one but it can't do half of shit isro robot do, when they say humanoid robot don't Google search and come back and defame ur country Man's hard work with other countries ones, becoz robot for space application and their control law entirely different department in machine leaning and advanced robotics,in my view Ita f..king mind blowing creating a space mission system and integration with a robotic platform it take years to finish and isro done it well, good job, for those who cried, with put considering ur seniority or ineffectual capability the failure to understand a basic humanoid to a application based humanoid robot gives u rank retard in my book gg, cry more.. GL

PS: even u Guy's saying its science project do one thing create a auto pilot for ur car or bike integrate it with a robotic skeleton then come here and bark other wise STFU

India-Brazil Space Cooperation: South American nation to track ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan missions

Tracking support for Indian satellites including Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan missions will be the focus of India Brazil Space Cooperation talks on Saturday. Also, the two sides will talk about the launch of Amazonia-1 satellite onboard PSLV in June-July this year from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Confirming this, senior officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “The Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), through its Ground stations in Alcantara and Cuiaba are already providing tracking support for Indian satellites including Chandrayaan-I, Megha Tropiques, MOM, and ASTROSAT).”

I don't understand why we need to put a human face on the robot? I don't think there's a need for rust in a space mission.

If ISRO is trying to go for evoking familiarity/empathy by having a sort of mascot, this falls in uncanny valley instead. Just have a tiger or something as the mascot, ora talking rocket.

Humanoid!! its a humanoid....may be it has some sensors that could actually measure certain biological parameters prior to the humanflight.
lets see.. on all the humanoid debate we are losing the focus on the purpose of the mission!

‘Industrialised’ PSLV by 2022

This is the first vehicle manufactured by industry as a whole product.
The first Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) fully built by the industry will be rolled out in 2022, K. Sivan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said on Friday.
Mr. Sivan was speaking after accepting the Sree Chithira Thirunal National Award - 2019 from Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. “Very soon, the PSLV will be manufactured by the industry as a whole product,” he said. The ISRO has announced plans to outsource the PSLV to the industry so that it can focus on other research areas and important missions.
Developmental flight
The first developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is expected in April this year, he said. This mission will be carried out from Sriharikota. The process of acquiring 2,300 acres at Kulasekharapattanam in southern Tamil Nadu for establishing a launch facility for the SSLV is in progress, he added.
“The SSLV is conceived as a potential low-cost access to space. It will cater to the large number of small satellite launch requirements. Launching from Sriharikota would, however, hamper regular launches,” he explained the reason for establishing the new launch pad.
Astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission were picked after rigorous medical and psychological screening, Mr. Sivan said. “A series of tests are planned in 2020 to validate the design and engineering aspects of the launch vehicle systems.”
He also reiterated ISRO’s decision to perform the first unmanned test flight by this year-end.

ISRO's Space Application Centre (SAC) has been quite successful in development of GaN-Based synthetic-aperture radars, for example- NISAR dual-band SAR satellite which is being jointly developed by ISRO and NASA is going to feature SAC-developed S-band SAR module.

NISAR's S-band SAR module uses GaN-based TRMs developed in India. NASA will provide L-band SAR. Both L and S band modules of NISAR will share a unfurlable reflector of 12 meter diameter. Another SAC project that features GaN SSPA is Airborne MiniSAR (not to be confused with Chandrayaan-1 MiniSAR) - an X-band lightweight SAR being developed for airborne high-resolution imaging applications.

Have a question for the Experts:

Most countries that possess a descent ballistic missile capability also have demonstrated atleast basic space launch capability (have their own launch vehicle, however rudimentary) including North Korea and Iran, as the tech. involved is not too different to master.

Then why do Pakis have failed to launch even a single satellite successfully on their own and SUPARCO still have to rely on CN. Is this not definite Proof that entire Pak ballistic missile program is bogus, they have still not figured out the tech. and still repainting bought off the shelf or locally assembled PLAAC rockets..

We have a dedicated SUPARCO thread. You could take this question there.

Here discussing it would simply derail the thread.

For this reason:
Most countries that possess a descent ballistic missile capability
Which they don't. They simply have assembled systems, not any learning curve in between. A launch vehicle would come before an MRBM if you are studying and testing your own systems.

Just to let you know, Pakis probably secretly have been trying to conduct a SLV-3 type orbital launch since past 2-3 years.

Their initial 2-3 tests have failed. So, they may only announce after first success.

Any further response from me will be on SUPARCO thread.

all their missiles are a paint job and outdated they didn't developed it on their own so they lack basic knowledge.

18-20 years back they had shown some model of SLV(saw that on PDF). I don't think they have enough money to fund these projects. But who knows China gifts them another old launcher and they paint it green.

They have got it.
Modified Kuaizhou, small-lift launcher.
