Punj Lloyd Ltd has established a 51:49 joint venture with Israel Weapon Industries (IWI). IWI has already supplied guns such as TAVOR assault rifles and UZI SMG to security forces in India and also has other major programs in which its small arms are undergoing trials.

The JV will manufacture components in the first phase for export to Israel, in which nearly 80 per cent of the components of the guns will be made in India. In the second phase, full guns will be made here for supplying to the security forces.

“This JV will be key in enabling India to leapfrog to a higher technological threshold through the adoption of advanced defence technologies. We are confident that with technology transfer from IWI, Punj Lloyd is positioned to manufacture the complete range of IWI products from pistols to light machine guns and specialist weapons like sniper rifles, in addition to providing service to the existing IWI products and support for new orders,” said Atul Punj, chairman, Punj Lloyd.

Industry sources estimate the opportunity of ongoing programs for small arms in internal and national security to be more than Rs 3,000 crore.

Currently, the manufacturing of small arms is completely with the public sector. The Union Cabinet had agreed in 2001 to allow manufacture of small arms in the private sector. Punj Llyod was among the few private firms, along with L&T and Bharat Forge, which had been granted license by DIPP to manufacture small arms in India in 2001-02. The production, however, could not start because the Home Ministry did not provide the clearance.

Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd of the Anil Ambani Group is planning to manufacture Kalashnikov class of weapons for Indian armed forces in a joint venture with an Israeli company . The Israeli arms maker, Kalashnikov Israeli Company, has agreed to jointly make Kalashnikov and other small arms with Reliance Defence, according to industry sources.
The manufacturing facility could come up at the Pipavav shipyard. Reliance Defence will hold 51 per cent stake in the joint venture, while the rest of the stake will be held by Kalashnikov Israel. Kalashnikov Israel is a subsidiary of the CAA Company of Israel. Industry sources said the tie-up could be formalised during the ongoing visit of Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. The small arms requirement from the three armed forces, paramilitary forces, and states police is in the range of about two million units over the next 10 years.

AK-103
With such a large requirement of the weapons, the potential market size is about ?6,000 crore. It is expected that more than 80 per cent of the weapon requirement for the forces will be assault rifles and carbines, whereas the balance will be for pistols and other weapons. The Indian Government had notified Small Arms Act 2016 in July. As per the new rules, a licensing committee within the MHA has to approve the grant of Licence for Small Arms and Ammunition to the Private Sector Companies.
For Reliance Defence, the licensing process could take over six months, sources said. The Kalashnikovs and other guns would be made under the Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) category introduced in Defence Procurement Policy 2016. Attempts would be made by Reliance Defence to indigenise the manufacturing process to over 60 per cent, which will also meet the Make in India and Skill India programmes, sources said. Sources pointed that the share of AK 47 rifle and its variants are nearly 20 per cent of the estimated 500 million firearms available worldwide. The low production cost of Kalashnikov family of weapons as compared to other assault weapons have further added to the popularity of Kalashnikov.

Indian forces regularly engage in close quarter combats, where Kalashnikov is a proven weapon. Both companies could also possibly collaborate on upgrading and refurbishment of old weapons such as .30 Springfield rifles, which are still being held in large quantity by Central and State Police forces, sources added. A spokesperson of Reliance Defence said that the two companies are in talks but refuse to elaborate further.

Nope, Excalibur is coming in as temporary measure, until MCIWS gets ready.
Are you dumb bro? @Zarvan is the self righteous arms exporter - importer and analyst. He decides what's best for whom. SCAR for whole Pakistan army, Beretta for their police force, AK103 for housewives, Bren for their school kids.

Su-35s are for ferrying supplies for mujahids in mountains. Mi-35 for recording cool videos of them blowing up and uploading on YouTube vlogs.

J-31 for each and every Pakistani as a symbol of Sino-paki friendship.

And suddenly Nawaj mia disturbed him in his dream. @Indx TechStyle @Bornubus @Ancient Indian @Blackwater

Your MCIWS is only coming as temporary measures
Or possibly, a mix of Kalashnikovs and MCIWS will be used by army, but MCIWS won't be dropped as "less than satisfactory" Excalibur already been chosen as interim weapon, plus you guys already know about sentiments of new establishment.

Don't know about army, but I'm sure these rifles will be used by special forces if news posted by @Zarvan is true.

But wouldn't it be difficult for our SFs to switch from using bullpups to AR style rifles? May be they are well versed in using them but it would take a great deal of logistics to full fill it.

The 'Indi'genization is down to the core.

Not much, considering that many already use AR and AK style rifles apart from Tavor.
