I think most of you here are very hard on Israel. Yes, you are right this is a real intelligence failure on many levels. But come on, there is no such thing as invincibility. Any military no matter how mightier it may be will have bad days but few bad days doesn't translate into defeat. It's not that simple, from whatever I have seen from videos or I could find, it seems that Israel's borders are not like Indian borders which are manned permanently they seem to be relying more on technology then human resources as they have less people.
And on top of that it was holiday so that's why they could not respond to sudden human waves which they never would have taken into calculation as they may have been complacent thinking of the detarance they have created would hold and keep them from coming in Israel like that.

Israel should go for a different strategy vis a vis Gaza Strip. Response should be proportionate not to the number of people killed on either side but number of rockets, missiles launched. If a thousand rockets are fired from Hamas side, it should fire a thousand or two, which will at least kill a few thousand and create an unmatched fear.
