This ideological obsession results in them clashing with bigger forces and then suffering instability.

South Africa does not realize that the other 4 BRICS members are economic and military powerhouses in their respective regions of the world and can use force to defend their interests. Something that they cannot do. Also, these 4 have much more stable institutions. Meanwhile, if the CIA removed their kid gloves against Pretoria, South Africa would turn into the Somalia of the 90s.
