The goal would be save 199 hostages currently under Hamas through diplomatic pressure from Qatar and Egypt, and then go after the top commanders of Hamas in the coming months and years. I think the US support is contingent on Israel agreeing to these terms. The other factor to consider is Hezbollah is itching for a fight, IDF does not want to get drawn into a bitter and bloody battle on the streets of Gaza and allow Hezbollah a free hand to attack from the north. Unlike Gaza, Hezbollah has a direct link to Iran without the fear of being besieged on all sides, so logistically they have an upper hand.

Yep. They don't actually even need to invade. Just keep Gaza in a seige for years. If human rights folks yell too much, just allow below the bare minimum stuff, population will stabilize and fall. Real fight is with Hez and others.
