after the 6 day war , began a war of attrition basically air battles , artillery barrages , kammandu raids etc etc etc between yehudis and misris and assorted arabis. All along the barlev line on the east cost of suez canal and over Sinai.
Soviet onion was a " friend " of Palestinians and thus supplied arabis liberally lots of weapons.
And during this time of 1967 to 1971 I guess soviet onion also sent hundreds of pilots , technicians etc to prepare misris for battle to take back sinai.
During one such engagement, israleis pilots shot down 5 mig 21 in 4 minutes and not suffered a single loss , similarly they killed soviet " advisors" in double digits during their kammandu raids and bombing runs thus Russians have old feud with israleis in this regard .

Russian geopolitics in the Middle East has been pretty stupid. Their appeasement tactics toward Muslims baffle me. Instead of dividing them as countries and enforcing those identities the way the US hyphenated others, Russia goes all out to appease them, starting with their handling of Chechnya.
