Islamist insurgency in Dagestan. Trained in Pakistan.

What is being described as a full-scale Islamist insurgency is building in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan.

Russia recently ended its decade-long "counter-terrorism operation" against separatist rebels in the neighbouring republic of Chechnya, bu More..t the fighting has spilled into other regions.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports from Dagestan.VIDEO:

Pakistan’s record in state sponsorship of terrorism is long and of broad standing. The Pakistani government has been directly involved in the planning, execution, and material support of terror groups, as well as in harboring terrorists and terrorist training camps within its territory. Most of these organizations are grounded in radical Islamic theology. There is evidence that the weapons sold to the Pakistani military were used in a 1984 hijacking of an Indian airliner . Explosives, timers, grenades, and other equipment used in attacks on Indian financial centers in 1993 were similarly traced to the Pakistani military . In addition to direct involvement, there is considerable evidence that Pakistan continues to provide patronage, safe harbor and training for Islamic militants. These include organizations that have conducted assassination attempts on the Egyptian leader, Hosni Mubarak, and the Egyptian Embassy . Chechen fighters have admitted to being trained in Pakistan . There is considerable proof that the recent hijacking of an Indian airliner was the work of organizations controlled by the Pakistani government.

Pakistan has been documented as providing military, diplomatic and moral support for terrorist movements in various parts of India, Myanmar, Russia (Chechnya and Dagestan), the Central Asian Republics, Egypt, Algeria and Afghanistan. Providing training and logistical support for terrorist organizations as well as using terrorist organizations as an extension of state policy. Some of these organizations are also believed to possess weapons of mass destruction.

The major world powers that are likely to be affected by Pakistan and its rogue acts are likely to be the United States, India, Israel, Russia, and China. However, it has not been branded as a "rogue" by the United States, or any of the other affected powers. These five states must act now, to prevent the problem metastasizing.

Branding it as "rogue" is not necessarily the best solution. It might massage the egos of some people, but it will not make the problem go away.

A female suicide bomber blew herself up in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, on approach to a police road block in the Kazbek district. The area neighbors Chechnya, home to Chechen female suicide bombers known as Black Widows. Dagestan might seem a million miles away from U.S. aviation interests — Dagestan transliterates to 'land of mountains' — but as for female suicide bombers are among the top-tier threats to U.S. aviation security. News of this Dagestanian female suicide bomber begs a few questions:

Have terrorist training camps been set up in Pakistan?
Who is training these female suicide bombers?

Threat to US Aviation? You mean, these Dagestan females will fly Panam or AA and bomb it??? USA doesnt bother to root out terrorism in places it has no gain in.

And Please provide Links if the above is from a news post etc.

The BBC artice you provided doesn't state Pakistan has anything to do with the Dagestan insurgency. I don't think it's necessary to read these sources you've provided, as the majority are heavily out of date and a large number, such as the one about the Lockerbie bomber trial don't really have anything to do with Pakistan. Also, apart from maybe the first link, most if not all the rest of those articles relating to Pakistan seem to be written by Indian authors, which makes them somewhat unreliable. I rarely ever trust Indian sources on Pak & vice-versa.

The only insurgency I'm aware of Pak being directly related to is the Kashmir insurgency, the original anti-Soviet Afghan insurgency till the start of the War on Terror & possibly Khalistan & a couple of decades back. Your idea of trying to pin seemingly everything that happens around the world on Pak is not helpful. India can't solve it's own problems till you stop tracing every tiny issue back to the ISI (who judging by the number of "agents" claimed to be arrested in India, probably have agents numbering in the millions) and accepts that it has problems and that there are other issues out in the world apart from us. Until you accept you have a genuine law & order problem without blaming us, I think you will likely never be able to solve this problem without killing everyone in the country.

Since President Rafique Tarar, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his father and Lt.Gen, Nasir have been associated with the TJ which has been instigating and assisting the extremist elements indulging in acts of terrorism in Chechnya, Dagestan and, possibly even Moscow, which has been rocked by explosions suspected to have been organised by Pakistani-backed fundamentalist groups, it is time the international financial institutions took notice of this and suspended all further assistance to Pakistan till it stops assisting these terrorist groups, "Izvestia" also identified Abu Abdulla Jafar as a Pakhtun who had been residing in Chechnya for some years and running a training camp at a place called Serzhenyurt

Even though the TJ(PAKISTAN'S TABLIGHI JAMAAT) claims to be apolitical and disinterested in political or administrative influence, many of its active members have come to occupy important positions. Examples are Lt.Gen. (retd) Javed Nasir, who was the DG of the ISI during Mr.Nawaz Sharif's first tenure as the Prime Minister, and Mr.Mohammad Rafique Tarar, the President of Pakistan, who has been an active worker of the TJ for many years.

Pakistan Supreme Court). However, the contacts of the Tablighis had always been with Mr.Mohammad Sharif (father of Mr.Nawaz Sharif) and not with the son. Mr. Nawaz is well aware of the "tariquah" (the path advocated by the TJ). He has been with the Tabligh for a fairly long time. He takes part in their meetings on a regular basis. He donated money to their welfare projects. As usual, the Tablighis never publicise the donors or the projects or the beneficiaries. All are committed to remain silent."

:viannen_10:In September-October,1995, the Pakistani army, acting on a tip-off from the then Maj.Gen.Ali Quli Khan Khattak, who was then the Director-General of Military Intelligence and who was subsequently superseded by Mr.Sharif in October,1998, and forced into retirement, arrested a group of 36 army officers and 20 civilians led by Maj.Gen. Zaheerul Islam Abbasi on a charge of plotting, in association with the TJ and the HUM, to have Mrs.Benazir Bhutto, the then Prime Minister, and senior army officers killed and proclaim the formation of an Islamic state.

It was reported that Lt.Gen.Ghulam Mohammad Malik, Commander of the 10 Corps, who was an active member of the TJ, was prematurely retired by Mrs.Bhutto because of strong suspicion that he was the main inspiration behind the plotters. He was replaced by Maj.Gen.Ali Quli Khan Khattak as the 10 Corps Commander with the rank of Lt.Gen. It was also reported that Lt.Gen.Malik, while admitting his membership of the TJ.

Two Bomb Blasts in S. Russia [ Daegestan]

MAKHACHKALA, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - A second car bombing within a few hours in the volatile south Russian republic of Dagestan has killed at least one person and injured at least 14 others, local police said on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, four police officers and a civilian were injured in a car bomb blast on the outskirts of the regional capital, Makhachkala.

In the second attack, a suicide bomber blew up his car at a police post, killing a Dagestani customs officer who was passing by in his vehicle, a police spokesman told RIA Novosti.

"Another 14 people were injured. These include police officers, civilians, and doctors on duty at the police post," he said.

The spokesman said at least five of the wounded are in hospital in a serious condition, and the others were sent home after receiving first aid.

Commenting on the earlier bomb blast in Makhachkala, Dagestani Interior Minister Ali Magomedov said police had prevented a more severe attack, as the suspected suicide bomber had planned to set off the explosive device in a public place in the capital's center.

Russia's North Caucasus regions have seen a rise in violence in recent months. Attacks on police, officials and troops, and special operations against militants have been reported almost daily in Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia.
In June, Dagestan's interior minister was assassinated at a wedding reception.

I don't see Dagestan protesting against Russia. Russia is doing a great job in providing security and instability in that region, keeping the mindless fundamentalist extremists away from turning it another beautiful country into terrorists safehaven.

Chechnya and Dagestan are the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HUM--formerly known as the Harkat-ul-Ansar), the Markaz Dawa Al Irshad and its militant wing, the Lashkar-e-Toiba. A detailed paper on the HUM was disseminated on March 20,1999,and on the Markaz and its Lashkar on July 26,1998.

India had repeatedly protested against giving military hardware like RD-93 and Mi-17's. Russia seems to have now added strings to these deals through China if this movement again picks up steam.
