Yes it would have been good for us if Iran had chosen to play safe. Iranians became cocky in the ME. They played for total control, plus the deal with Obama administration lulled them into a false sense of confidence that US had acquiesced their new role in the region. But then Iranians expected Hillary Clinton would come to power and continue Obama's policy. They were, as was the rest of the world, not prepared for Trump shock. Iran is just unlucky.

Unlike Iraq and most of ME(with the exception of Turkey) Iran has a deep rooted tradition of democratic opposition (The anti shah movement was led by a democratic opposition, but later got hijacked by Khomeinist). Depending on how quickly the regime (supported undoubtedly by IRGC) falls, its quite possible the opposition can quickly take over and prevent complete destabilization.

However if the conflict prolongs then there will be break down of central authority. Kurdish factions in the northwest and baloch factions is the southeast could assert themselves in thier respective area of dominance and US may end up backing these factions (with arms and finance).. If the later happens Pakistanis will be in trouble.
