Bomb blast kills at least 53 Shi'ites | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
A bomb tore through a procession of Shi'ite pilgrims in southern Iraq on Saturday, killing at least 53 people. It was the latest episode in a power struggle between rival Muslim sects that has escalated since the U.S. military withdrew last month.
Most of the latest attacks appear to be aimed at Iraq's majority Shi'ites, suggesting Sunni insurgents who seek to undermine the Shi'ite-dominated government are to blame.
Saturday's blast occurred near the town Zubair on the last of the 40 days of Arbaeen, when hundreds of thousands of Shi'ite pilgrims travel to Karbala, Iraq, and other sites. The end of Arbaeen is one of the most sacred times for Shi'ites.

Virendra
