Iran, Pakistan, Israel most negatively rated countries: BBC poll – The Express Tribune

Pakistan was ranked second in the list of most negatively rated countries in the world by a global poll for BBC World Service, which surveyed 24,090 people around the world.

Citizens of 22 countries were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone between December 6, 2011 and February 17, 2012. Polling was conducted by the international polling firm GlobeScan and its research partners in each country, together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland.

Pakistan was rated "mostly negative" by 51% of the respondents, getting placed just one spot above the most negatively rated country – Iran, which was rated negative by 55% of the total respondents.

According to the poll results, Pakistan is the only country which rated its own influence as negative.

A negative view of Pakistan declined by 4% as compared to 2011.

The survey results revealed that a negative view of Pakistan was found mostly in Western countries. Around 75% Americans, 69% Canadians and 72% Australians said Pakistan's influence in the world is mainly negative. The pattern of negative perception was similar in the European countries. The view of Pakistan by India, country's all-time arch rival, was negative as well.

Most of the respondents blamed Pakistan's foreign policy and the poor treatment of its citizens for such a widespread negative perception of the country.

Out of 22 countries that were surveyed, Indonesia is the only one which holds a positive view of Pakistan.

Other findings

Japan was rated most positively by the majority of the respondents (58%), taking Germany's last year position which had its positive ratings drop from 60% to 56%. This placed Germany in second place behind Japan.

Canada (53%) and the UK (51%) are the third and fourth most positively viewed countries.

China's positive ratings rose from 46% to 50% this year.

India's perception around the world is below. I was surprised by the negative perception in S. Korea which was unexpected.

Ask those polled to point on the globe which country is where. The percentage giving the right answer will be quite interesting.

Not able to open that PDF for some reason. :(

I can't believe that South Korea has a negative perception of India. Each time I go to South Korea, the taxi drivers don't even know where India is. Some of them confuse with Indonesia (because there are many restaurants serving Indonesian cuisine there). But almost nobody knows about India, apart from a very small number of white-collar professionals working in companies like Samsung, LG, Doosan, etc. The only countries they all know very well are USA, North Korea, Japan, China.

Well it does work for me. Here is the link to the website Views of Europe Slide Sharply in Global Poll, While Views of China Improve

The BBC / Globescan poll asks about 25k to 30k and is one of the few polls that is conducted yearly across the world so it does give a consistent polling data since 2006 when the polling was started for various countries.

Ofcourse, we don't have to read too much into it but the polling data is a helpful indicator on trend lines and it also has data on why people choose positive or negative for a particular country

We don't need to write off such surveys completely, though as is the case, they remain far from getting the real pulse on the issue, in this case the perception of a country, but there do remain hidden messages.

A few points that come out very strikingly of the survey are:

  • Our perception is positive not because of what occupies our minds back home, economy, but because of "traditions and culture", and then comes "economy, products and services" in contrast if we look at Japan or even China for that matter, they have a positive vibe largely because of "economy, products and services". Something to note, how important the trade and investments can be in creating an influence. Talk about soft power through economy, we have lessons to take. One of the main reasons why I believe China has fared better in Latin America or for that matter even in Africa than India has, and yes, China has created a better perception than us, and we are shouting exploitation of Africa by China, really? I wonder! Our foreign policy has no role to play, but that is understandable since one needs to take sides to generate perceptions which we haven't started taking for now.

  • Was rather surprised to look at the positive reflection China has generated, though one wonders with the escalating tensions in the SCS, can they sustain the same, and the positive vibe is all the more surprising since if one keeps reading/listening to the western media one would imagine nothing worse would have happened to the world than the rise of China.

  • This point I believe is very significant. Chinese aren't overall positive about Pakistan, in contrast Pakistan comes across as the most positive country on China, actually floored! There is something that is dramatically not right here. It comes across that the Pakistanis are completely sold out on all the rhetoric that surrounds the Sino-Pak friendship, but Chinese deep inside are a very practical lot. Pragmatic, the Chinese are.

Some general stuff:

  • This one comes across as surprising, what's with Israel? Why is the perception negative in India, and majority have no option at all? Survey doesn't highlight any specific reason that is country specific, so we don't get the reason, but this isn't a good trend, though in the media at least I don't see where negative image of Israel gets generated, so why is such a trend catching up? What is on play here? Look at Europe, all negative for them, even Germany!

  • On Israel and iran, it seem we Indians are as divided, overall negative, but positives for each and negatives for each are the same. We are not clear which direction we stand, neither as a country nor the populace that was polled or possibly as DFI debates, we want to milk both. Opportunists, may be!

  • If the survey is to go by, India still has a huge amount of influence on Russia with negligible negative influence, in contrast Russia's influence can generate a decent level of negative perception in India. I guess the answer lies in economic integration, hope the land route to Russia through CAR works out, we stand to gain a lot.

  • Nigerians are few of the most positive people out there. They are positive about pretty much every country including Israel, though Pakistan and Iran miss out but not by much.

These polls are meaningless and more so if its from bbc.
No different to most media sources. Most polls are pointless because they generally don't represent the people. 24,090 out of 6 odd billion people is;nt much so yes i agree with you.

The BBC has gone down hill in term of reporting: mainly because there articles are pro Labour/Europe rather than presenting an unbiased view that weighs up both sides of the political spectrum. However I must disagree with you. The BBC is one of the worlds finest institutions and in terns if reporting one of the most trust worthiness, Despite my loath of the socialist views, i would still believe what they report more than any other media that the world has to offer - or at least they are in terms of Non UK correspondence, I believe that the commie Mikhail Gorbachev stated this in an interview after his political career ended. BBC on UK matters is a different story.

can't believe that South Korea has a negative perception of India.
It is because of our pruchase of LG (Life is Good) products being more than that of South Korea's, their Life had become Bad!
