The player auction for the 2010 Indian Premier League has begun in Mumbai.

In early deals, Kieron Pollard joined Mumbai for $750,000 (£456,500) and fellow West Indian Kemar Roach went to Deccan for $720,000 (£438,000).

South African fast bowler Wayne Parnell went to the Delhi Daredevils for $610,000 (£371,300).

Eoin Morgan will join fellow England batsman Kevin Pietersen at the Royal Challengers after they bid $220,000 (£133,000) for his services.

Kolkata Knight Riders secured New Zealand paceman Shane Bond for $750,000 (£456,500).

England's Graeme Swann is one of three players to have attracted the highest base price of $250,000 (£153,000) for Tuesday's auction.

Swann, Australia's Brad Haddin and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi topped the list, however all remained unsold after the first round of bidding.

Surrey and former England star Mark Ramprakash is valued at $200,000 (£121,700).

The deals for Pollard and Bond were decided by a newly-introduced tiebreaker rule.

Pollard attracted $750,000 bids from four franchises - Mumbai, the Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata.

The four bidders were asked to make silent bids on paper within five minutes. IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi received them and made announced the winner.

Kolkata went into a tiebreak with the Deccan for Bond.

The silent bid amount exceeding the base price is not disclosed. The excess money - more than the franchisees limit of $750,000 spending - goes to IPL and not the player.

IPL III starts on 12 March and ends on 25 April. England play two Tests in Bangladesh from 12-24 March.

Only four non-Indians are permitted to feature in each playing XI, with eight in each squad.

In all, 66 overseas players are vying for only 12 spots - though that could rise as some teams are in the process of buying out some of the contracts of existing overseas players in their squads.

Jonathan Trott and Tim Bresnan (both $100,000), Anthony McGrath, Monty Panesar and Rob Key (all $50,000) complete the list of English players up for auction.

Australian Adam Gilchrist steered Deccan Chargers to victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs in last year's IPL final in Johannesburg, staged in South Africa because of security concerns.

But this year's tournament returns to India, where it was won in its inaugural year by the unfancied Rajasthan Royals.

All the players bought from Tuesday auction in Mumbai will be given a one-year contract valid until 31 December which will also cover a Champions League Twenty20 tournament later this year.

Full overseas IPL player auction list:

The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Sports | Bond, Pollard hot picks

Bond, Pollard hot picks

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Mumbai: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bagged New Zealand speedster Shane Bond, while West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard was bought by the Mumbai Indians for a staggering sum, during the IPL III player auction here Tuesday.

The KKR scooped up Bond with a ‘secret bid’ amount, following a tie with the Deccan Chargers, who had to be content with another upcoming player from the Caribbean islands, Kemar Roach.

The Mukesh Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians were believed to have shelled out nearly $1.5m (approx Rs 6 crore) over and above the spending cap of $750,000 to get Pollard, after a four-way tie with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR,and the Chennai Super Kings.

The KKR, too, seemed to have splashed no less than Rs 2 crore in excess of the budget cap on Bond, according to a source in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, it may be noted that the ‘secret bid’ goes to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and not the player.

Pollard, 22, is yet to play Tests, but made a deep impact in the inaugural Champions League T20 in October, in which he played for Trinidad and Tobago.

For the KKR, getting Bond was a huge relief after missing out on Pollard. Co-owner Jai Mehta refused to buy the argument that the management had gambled by putting their money on the injury-prone New Zealander.

“He is not going to play Tests, but only ODIs and T20s. And the coach said that he is in pretty good shape,” Mehta said.

He did not wish to speculate on whether Bond would meet the same fate as Bangladesh’s Mashrafe Mortaza, who was clinched after a fierce bidding for $650,000 but ended up playing only one match in IPL II. “That depends on the captain and coach,” he said.

The Delhi DareDevils pulled off a silent coup by bagging South African left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell for $610,000.

Having failed to get the top three, and their strike bowler Fidel Edwards doubtful with an injury, the Chargers ended up paying $720,000 for Roach. The base price for the 21-year-old right-arm fast bowler from Barbados, who has played just five Tests and seven one-dayers, was $100,000.

Much of the excitement was restricted to the bidding for Bond, Pollard, Roach and Parnell. Thereafter, 23 players went under the hammer and only two of them were sold. Thisara Perera was sold to the Chennai Super Kings and Damien Martyn to the Rajasthan Royals.

After that, IPL chairman Lalit Modi intervened and announced a “change in the process”. With five slots remaining — one each for the Super Kings, the Deccan Chargers and the Kings XI Punjab, and two for the Royals — Modi asked the franchises to name their desired player in a closed bid.

Accordingly, the Super Kings, the Royals and the Kings XI won Justin Kemp, Adam Voges and Yusuf Abdullah respectively at their respective base price. As expected, there were no takers for Pakistani players, including star performers like Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir.

Mohammed Kaif was bought by the Kings XI in a second round of bidding for $250,000.

At the end of the day, two slots, one each of the Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers, were left unfilled. All franchises have the option of seeking a replacement for which the budget cap of $750,000 would not apply.

Maha govt to levy entertainment tax on cricket matches

STAFF WRITER 18:48 HRS IST

Mumbai, Jan 20 (PTI) The Maharashtra Government will levy entertainment tax on cricket matches, including the Twenty20 matches of the third edition of Indian Premier League.

"The government has not charged any tax on the cricket matches so far and therefore, the decision has been taken at the cabinet meeting today," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said.

"Considering the changing cricket scenario and commercialisation of the game, the government has decided to impose the entertainment tax," Principal Secretary of Revenue Department Ramesh Kumar said.

The quantum of tax for matches held in Mumbai will be 25 per cent and for those played at venues located within the jurisdiction of other municipal corporations will range between 15 and 20 per cent, Kumar said.

Reacting to the state government's decision, IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi told reporters that the private league had no issue over paying tax.

Internet search giant Google has announced it will stream all Indian Premier League cricket matches live via its YouTube video-sharing website.

Under the terms of the agreement, Google will have exclusive online rights over the contents for two years.

Both Google and the Indian Premier League (IPL) will share revenues from sponsorships and advertising jointly.

Google says it is the first time that it is live streaming a cricket tournament, which starts on 12 March.

"We are thrilled to have the IPL as our global partner," said Shailesh Rao, a senior manager of Google India.

"YouTube offers an open platform for sports and entertainment companies to take their content to a global audience and a great opportunity for advertisers."

The third edition of the popular T20 tournament, featuring the world's top players in eight teams owned by rich businessmen and Bollywood stars, has attracted much media attention.

On Tuesday, auctions to secure players' services were held in Mumbai (Bombay) with West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand paceman Shane Bond both attracting the highest bids, which were in excess of $750,000.

"This unique initiative by IPL to partner Google India will give the league a global reach on a single distribution platform," IPL Chairman Lalit Modi said.

Visa, politics no reason for Pak players missing IPL-3: India- ET Cetera-News By Industry-News-The Economic Times

Visa, politics no reason for Pak players missing IPL-3: India
21 Jan 2010, 1852 hrs IST, ANI

NEW DELHI: Rubbishing Pakistan's claim that its eleven players did not win Indian Premier League contracts because of politics or visa concerns, the ministry of external affairs said on Thursday that such apprehensions were misplaced.

"The participation or absence of Pakistani cricketers in a commercial event of the nature of IPL is, thus, a matter not within the purview of the government," the MEA said in a statement.

It termed the allegations as "unfortunate" and asked Pakistan to introspect on the reasons, which have put a strain on relations between India and Pakistan, and have adversely impacted on peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Shahid Afridi's manager, Umran Khan, had told the BBC that franchisees were advised not to bid as Pakistan players would not be issued with visas.

Khan believes the visa issue was behind the failure of Pakistan players not winning IPL contracts.

The MEA further clarified that 17 Pakistani cricketers were issued requisite Indian visas at very short notice in December 2009 and January 2010 to participate in IPL 2010.

Based on a request from the Pakistan Cricket Board to the High Commission of India in Islamabad, the MEA also facilitated necessary clearances from other ministries of the Government of India.

Cricketers from Pakistan had participated in the first edition of IPL in 2008, but not in the second edition in 2009, which was held in South Africa. One Pakistani cricketer participated in the Champions League T-20 tournament held in India in October 2009.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik also charged the Indian Government with malafide intent on the IPL issue, and has threatened to cut off sporting ties with India.

A parliamentary delegation from Pakistan which was slated to visit India to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Election Commission of India, has cancelled its visit in protest over the IPL embarrassment.

March 8 date for IPL franchise announcement

(UKPA) – 3 hours ago

The Indian Premier League will announce the two new franchises to be added to the Twenty20 tournament on March 8, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has revealed.

The owners of the two new teams to join the league next year have been a matter of intense speculation after Modi stated he had received expressions of interest from an English Premier League team.

Modi said 12 cities are in contention, including four which are already hosting matches this season.

"Tenders can be collected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India office or the IPL office from February 21," Modi said on twitter.com

"The bids will be opened on March 8 in Mumbai.

"Details of the bidding process for two new teams will be in the tender document."

The cities in the fray are Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur, Dharamsala, Indore, Cuttack, Gwalior and Visakapatnam.

Modi also indicated cities such as Rajkot, Pune, Vadodara and Kochi, which are in the process of building stadiums, may bid for teams.

The new team franchisees will be granted access to venues hosting matches during the third edition of the IPL so as to familiarise themselves with the process.

The third edition of the tournament begins on March 12.

Modi plays down security fears

(UKPA) – 12 hours ago

Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi has insisted this year's tournament will go ahead in its home country as planned, accusing the media of overplaying security fears.

Australian Cricketers' Association chief executive Paul Marsh had earlier revealed an independent report into security for the league had shown up some "serious concerns".

But Modi told BBC Sport: "We are going to have the tournament in India. I can't see any reason why we should move it at this point in time. The media is reacting to every fringe group saying security is a problem."

Players' associations from Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa recently commissioned a report from security expert Reg ****ason following a threat from 313 Brigade, which has links with terror group Al-Qaeda.

And Marsh admitted ****ason's findings have prompted the ACA to ask the IPL for further assurances.

He said: "The independent report has identified some serious concerns with aspects of the current security process. Specifically, these concerns relate to the reported direct threat against the event and the status and implementation of the IPL's security plan.

"The process from here is for all players associated to meet with their player groups and for all of us to feed back the concerns raised from these meetings to the IPL.

"This will be coordinated through our peak body the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA). From here we will await a response from the IPL."

Modi insisted that the best possible security plans were in place for the competition, adding: "Nobody in the world can safeguard the safety of the players in any tournament. All we have to do is ensure we are putting on the best security. Safety is paramount to us and we are working with the national and state governments to ensure we have good security in place.

"It is being discussed and upgraded on a daily basis with all the key stakeholders, and we will continue to monitor that. At the end of the day we have to ensure the safety plans we put in place and the way we conduct them are absolutely top notch."

Modi satisfied with IPL security

(UKPA) – 4 hours ago

Lalit Modi has vigorously defended the security arrangements for this year's Indian Premier League and has warned any player who chooses to opt out over safety concerns that they will be risking their future in the tournament.

A series of messages on the IPL commissioner's Twitter page were listed today reiterating that the Twenty20 event would not be relocated and criticising the role of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations.

"We will not be dictated by players associations where to play. IPL will be played in India," Modi stated.

"The government has already given ample assurances for safe conduct of games. We are working with all agencies in this direction.

"IPL is for India and will remain for India. No one can dictate to us how we should conduct our tournaments."

"We will allow replacement for those who decide not to show up. They risk being in future IPL. The call will be [theirs]."

Players' associations from England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia are currently working together to address their members' concerns over terror threats against the IPL, work that is being co-ordinated by FICA.

Last year's edition of the competition was relocated to South Africa after a clash with the Indian elections meant certain security services were unavailable, but Modi has left little doubt that was a one-off.

I think Modi is taking the correct stand. IPL is an Indian league and no one is going to pressure us about the venues.

They are getting money to play. They are like employees who can't dictate terms to the employer. Genuine apprehensions should be satisfied, any threats should be dismissed.

England and Australia were never happy with IPL. IPL gives an extra-ordinary power to India in cricket and even soft-power of India increases. They envy it and admire it in equal measures. Got to salute the courage and perservance of Lalit Modi in making IPL a success. In 10 yrs time, IPL would become to big to be controlled by anyone and will give India both moolah and soft-power. Just look at how the Paks reacted after their exclusion in IPL. They did not even cry so much about lack of talks or water. Thats soft power for you.

'Withdrawls unlikely after IPL's new security promise'

STAFF WRITER 11:24 HRS IST

London, Mar 2 (PTI) It warned of mass withdrawls from the Indian Premier League but the Federation of International Cricketers Association now says such a scenario is unlikely to arise as IPL organisers have given fresh commitments on the security of players.

After the al-Qaeda threat against the event was deemed "not credible" by various security experts, FICA chief Tim May said IPL's new promises would "certainly improve confidence in security".

"This is a significant step forward. The more information you provide the players with, the greater the likelihood that they will attend the event," May told 'BBC Sport'.

After refusing to deal with players' bodies all along, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said he was ecstatic that "everybody is on the same page about the security arrangements".

"This is very good news for us - I don't think there will be any withdrawals at all.

IPL signs deal with mobile internet firm

STAFF WRITER 19:6 HRS IST

Mumbai, Mar 6 (PTI Indian Premier League (IPL) and its licensing partner Global Cricket Ventures today announced a partnership with mobile internet firm July Systems to enable fans view the Twenty20 league action on internet-enabled handsets in the country.

Fans with an internet enabled mobile phone would have access to live ball-by-ball video updates, action replays and video score cards through this deal, said IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi at a media conference here today.

"The IPL is the first sports league in the world to roll out a mass market, mobile internet service of this type and scale. I am certain IPL fans here in India will enjoy this real-time user interface now available on their very own mobile phones," the T20 league's chief said.

BCCI divided over tender clauses
Indranil Basu, TNN, Mar 8, 2010, 12.23am IST

NEW DELHI: Was Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi cornered in the governing council meeting in Mumbai on Sunday, where the bids for the two new Indian Premier League (IPL) teams were supposed to be opened? Given the manner in which BCCI president Shashank Manohar and the governing council members decided to cancel the entire tender process, it appears there is more to the issue than meets the eye.

Sources said that opposition came from within the BCCI, specifically the board president and secretary N Srinivasan, who objected to the revision of the terms and conditions in the bid document. Others in the meeting - Sunil Gavaskar, Nawab Pataudi, Ravi Shastri, Chiratyu Amin, Rajeev Shukla and Niranjan Shah - also supported the BCCI bigwigs.

According to the terms and conditions of the original tender, the bidders were supposed to show a net worth of $1 billion, submit a bid performance guarantee of $100m and also a bank guarantee of up to the bidding amount.

Board sources said that Sahara India Parivar - the Indian team sponsors who had shown interest in buying an IPL team - wrote a letter to the board and objected to three clauses: the net worth clause, the bid performance amount and the exorbitant bank guarantee demands. Even an IPL governing council member wrote a letter to the BCCI president objecting to the tender clauses, and sources said the bids which were submitted by Gautam Adani (for Ahmedabad) and Venugopal Dhoot (for Pune) were also non-compliant.

Sources said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was asked by council members why a clause of $100 million as ‘performance deposit' was inserted into the tender documents when the previous team bidders had paid only $5 million in 2008. Modi was asked: "Was it deliberately inserted to favour some concerned parties? When there is a possibilty of eight to nine teams bidding for two IPL teams, why did only two bidders come forward?'' Now, the action shifts to Chennai on March 21, when the new bids will be opened.

Yusuf’s ton goes in vain as Mumbai clinch thriller

Mumbai: The magnificent century by Yusuf Pathan went in vain as Lasith Malinga’s last over heroics helped Mumbai Indians clinch their opening Indian Premier League encounter against Rajasthan Royals by 4 runs here at Brabourne Stadium on Saturday.

More than being an exciting win for Mumbai Indians, it was more of a disappointing loss for Rajasthan Royals as a stupendous 37 balls century by Pathan went futile.

Extravagant innings by Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu helped Mumbai reach a a mammoth 212/6; this is also the highest score ever posted by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. The 213-run chase looked a bit difficult for Rajasthan Royals as they lost their first four wickets very early in the game. While the other batsmen kept on losing their wickets at regular intervals, it seemed difficult to the visitors to even reach anywhere near the given target.

However, it was the heroics of Yusuf Pathan which brought his team so close to victory and had it not been his unfortunate run-out, Rajasthan Royals would, for sure, have won the match.

Govt. to get more than Rs. 200 crore as taxes from IPL

Government is expected to rake in more than Rs. 200 crore as taxes from the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to Finance Ministry sources, the taxes would be accrued as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from the remuneration paid to players, umpires, coaches, commentators amongst others under the income tax category while advertising, marketing and consultancy services of the sporting extravaganza will be taxed under the service tax bracket.

As per the estimate calculated by the field formations of the Revenue department, the IPL will fetch about Rs. 100 crore each under the direct (income tax) and indirect (service tax) categories.

Kallis leads superb Bangalore chase

(UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Jacques Kallis smashed an imperious half-century as the Royal Challengers Bangalore secured a remarkable eight-wicket home victory over the Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.

Fuelled by a superb 75 from opener Manvinder Bisla and Ravi Bopara's 77 - his second consecutive half-century - the Kings XI amassed a formidable 203 for three after choosing to bat first.

But Kallis smashed an unbeaten 89 and Robin Uthappa smacked 51 as the Royal Challengers overhauled that target with seven deliveries to spare.
