Video of India's new aircraft carrier INS Vikrant put into operation on 2 September. The ship is armed with four Italian 76-mm artillery systems from the Italian Leonardo group, two Israeli-made Barak-1 and Barak-8 missile systems, and Russian AK-630 anti-aircraft artillery systems. The air wing of 26 aircraft included the MiG-29K fighter, the Russian Ka-31 helicopter and the American MH-60R helicopter. In the future, it is possible to replace the aircraft with the French Rafale M or the American F-18 Super Hornet. The cost of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is US$2.9 billion. The cruising range of the aircraft carrier is 7,500 nautical miles. Crew - 1560 people.

Is Naval Rafale is a misfit for INS Vikrant or is it a good fit? . There are few negative voices which say that INS Vikrant lift is too small and it’s arrestor cables may not be able to handle higher powered and greater weighted Rafale or even the F-18 (the alternative choice).

I think we have enough evidence to know that Rafale wont fit on Vikrant/Vikramaditya.
And about the arrestor cables, they are from Russia. The question however is....are these cables similar to the ones that they use on their own carrier that arrests the much heavier Su-33? If yes, then no worries.

Americans are trying really hard to sell a jet (hornet) which won't work on our carrier rather than selling a jet (f35B) which will actually work.

India will never buy the F-35, unless maybe if Lockheed disables the uplink kill switch. They have the leashes on every F-35 ever sold to an ally. Also, IN and IAF both like having user-oriented customizations, on their terms, which is again a big no no for uncle.

F-35B is an inferior version with vertical landing. Vertical landing means landing with limited payload. Landing with limited payload usually means taking off with limited payload.
We have STOBAR Carriers for superior jets.

If the arrestor gear can’t support the Rafale it won’t be able handle the f18

anyway the MTOW of the Rafale and MiG-29K are almost identical so I can’t see there being an issue there

the biggest issue are the lifts (both f18 and Rafale face issues there) and the restraining gear system is designed only for the MiG-29K. The latter is something neither jet can address without a refit. So they’ll likely have to do it on the brakes which is a very risky proposition IMO

Basically the IN have made a mess for themselves

So in conclusion only 2 jets are compatible with our carrier.
1. LCA navy
2. F35B
Both have very low payload capacity.
If this is the case then better go for LCA as us won't even consider selling f35.
LCA can carry nasm-mr with range of 150km and kh59.
It's not optimal but still a good option till tedbf comes, this will also save lot of money

have been saying for quite longer. Pay 500m to get IP rights for the Mig29k aircraft design and if possible with Flight control law code and design the rest of the avionics ourselves. Like J11. I mean heck, fit Mig29k airframe with F414, Israeli radar, Indian cockpit and weapons. Would be a beast. It would save time as the aircraft design itself is already validated.

Whichever gets selected would require further fitment and upgrades to Vikrant. it will go back to Port for 6 months atleast.

Indian Navy should have ordered atleast 100 Mig 29K to begin with for both its aircraft carriers when they acquired the INS Vikramaditya, rather than just 45.
Or atleast they could have demanded shifting the production line to India so we could make as many as we fancy.
Navy is considering different jet dur to performance and reliability issues, more numbers won't help. We have no choice except developing own jet
