INS Vikrant Due To Be Inducted By December 2018, Says Navy Chief Sunil Lanba

INS Viraat is all set to bid goodbye to the Indian Navy and INS Vikrant is all set to join the force, said Navy Chief Sunil Lanba.

While adressing a Press Conference at INS Shikra (Mumbai), Lanba said ” INS Viraat after having done service for 29 years, it is scheduled to be de-inducted to the later part of the year.”

“Ministry has written to coastal states, we are waiting for a proposal to come from one of these states. Once proposal is sent to ministry, will see how Viraat can be converted into an aircraft carrier museum.”

On INS Vikrant induction, he mentioned that For INS Vikrant, we are in touch with Kochin Shipyard. It is due to be inducted by December 2018

On matter of allegations against a medical officer by a subordinate in Southern Command, Lanba said ” Just received BOI report,being analysed.”

Lauding Indian Navy efforts, Lanba said “we are continously working towards indigenisation,till date 200 ships have been constructed indigenously and 46 are still under construction.”

I hope all the pending work and delayed instrument clusters are delivered on time, the project is delayed as is once gets inducted will give long shelf life to 2 Carrier ops for IN.

Tejas navy is unlikely before 2025. It shall be a Mk2 version of LCA. 15.5 m long with 116 KN engine with ultra long range.

Active: INS Viraat: 28,700 tons, Centaur class carrier (ex-HMS Hermes) in service since 1987. INS Vikramaditya : 45,400 tons, Modified Kiev class carrier (ex-Admiral Gorshkov), in service with India since 2013.

Under construction: INS Vikrant: 44,000 tons, Vikrant class carrier. It has been built at Cochin Shipyard and has been launched, and is expected to enter service in 2018.

Planned: INS Vishal: 65,000 tons, Vikrant-class carrier. Yet to start, planned to enter service in 2025. It may be nuclear powered.

Retired: INS Vikrant : 19,500 tons, Majestic-class carrier, (ex-HMS Hercules), in service from 1961 to 1997, used as a museum until 2012, scrapped 2014-2015.

The government is seriously considering IAC-2 and it is in “concept” stage, he said. The Information Exchange Annex signed between India and the US will benefit the navy in its IAC-1 project, Pabby said.

Navy aims to induct first indigenous aircraft carrier by 2018

Indian navy has set the target of having 212 ships in its fleet by 2027 which will be a "real challenge" and there is a need to work "very hard" for it, Vice Admiral (Controller Warship Production and Acquisition) G S Pabby told reporters.

NEW DELHI: The Navy today said it has set a target of 2018 for inducting its first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) and is "seriously considering" about having a second such ship.

Indian navy has set the target of having 212 ships in its fleet by 2027 which will be a "real challenge" and there is a need to work "very hard" for it, Vice Admiral (Controller Warship Production and Acquisition) G S Pabby told reporters.

The government is seriously considering IAC-2 and it is in "concept" stage, he said.

The Information Exchange Annex signed between India and the US will benefit the navy in its IAC-1 project, Pabby said.

"Since the Americans have a good experience as they have commissioned a large number of ships, we are hoping that we will draw from their experience," the senior navy officer said.

For getting technologies available with the US, an agreement and protocol for sharing information -- maintaining its confidentiality and integrity -- was needed to be signed. The Information Exchange Annex is that protocol.

Since then, a team of senior US Navy officials has visited the shipyard at Cochin last month to help with some issues in the IAC-1.

Contracts for transfer of technology about the Mine Countermeasures Vessels (MCMV) or minesweepers should be signed soon, he said.

"It is moving very well. We are monitoring it very closely because we badly need these ships. We have finalised almost all issues related to transfer of technology from the foreign collaborators and that contract should be signed very soon," he said.

When asked about the Landing Platform Docks (LDP) for the Indian Navy, the Vice Admiral said the technical evaluation has been carried out for the project and there are some issues about capacity assessment, which is also in final stages.
