Is is the same beast that we are getting? I thought Nerpa and Chakra were stationed in the Russian far east.
No, we are not getting the Akula. The NATO codenames are wrong and ignore the news reports that say we are getting the Akula. We are getting the Shchuka-B.

That is the Typhoon(NATO) or Akula(Russian). The one we are getting is the Akula II(NATO) or Shchuka B(Russia). So, now you can see where the confusion is.

Akula means Shark in Russian. If you simply say the one in the picture is Akula, then there will be confusion if you cannot actually identify the sub by looks alone.

I guess that's 834 TK 208 Dmitriy Donskoy shown in the picture, per wiki the oldest and currently the only Typhoon class hull in active service. I always thought all the typhoon hulls had been scraped.

It's kind strange that russia scrapped 3 newer hulls, but chose to keep the oldest one (commissioned in 1981, thus 30 years old) and have it upgraded to house the Beluva missiles. Why would anyone do that?

2 more are in reserve. They don't have the funding to put them out to sea.

That's for sure. But I don't understand why they chose to keep the oldest one. Maybe unlike the ones that were completed in the waning years of the Soviet Union, that one had supeiror build quality:rolleyes:

The military objective is enhanced surveillance and strike capability in IOR and other places like Bay Of Bengal and Andaman sea..

The political objective is power projection..
