Vikramaditya Poster :

There are some errors in the article:
  • Gorshkov was not a heavy aviation cruiser, but a tactical aviation cruiser. Kuznetsov is a heavy aviation cruiser.
  • The picture of Vikramaditya is flipped left-right.

Most Indians I know that are in business are not dumb enought to get screwed this bad, your chances of getting the Russians to pay the bill are just as bad as India getting the carrier by 2013.

Then why IN didn't impose penalty? a good will? How nice!!
They have their stooge and agent running GOI. They will get whatever they want. Thank god they have not asked us for damages and have decided to do the repairs of their own. had they asked for damages, GOI wud have given them that also.

A good question I had NOT figured out, either - in the end, there is NO penalty for Russian, but India bears the re-fix cost (& time), or else? Anyone has a nailed-down answer?
According to the Russians, a 4 month delay is fine. So, a penalty may not be levied if they deliver within that time.

It was the IN which asked for the asbestos to be replaced with firebricks.

According to the Russian media, it was IN which chose the firebricks vendor.

These factors give Russians the advantage in the negotiations. But then the Russians could have claimed before installation that the firebricks weren't military grade and saved everyone the hassle. Maybe they did not know. But we can be sure, the current project may very well be below the red line for Sevmash. They asked for $2.9 Billion and received only $2.2 Billion. Then again, we may not know the full story, so no point speculating financial matters of such large deals.

Pls have a look at Falkland war and HMS hermes operations. The ship had more than its capacity of ac & helos embarked and the sea state will tell you that there was no problem.
Rough seas result in suspension of flight ops but the ac & Helos are tied down to the deck with 6-8 lashings and they are very safe.
They are very safe with waves rolling across the deck? They are not submarines.

Penalty issue is exaggerated in Internet media, there are no official conformation of this..

Once the extend of damge is known there was no need for any any penalty..

IN forced Russian to accept its idea, Russian then asked IN to sign on the change and be fully responsible for the out come. IN shot its own toes, that is why IN can't ask pay back.
Then why IN didn't impose penalty? a good will? How nice!!

Asbestos only can be used for external insulation for boilers, therefore the bricks used to replace the asbestos must be on the outside of the boiler, and will not face flame directly. The modern boilers use oil as fuel, turning off oil supply can shut down fire instantly, but what actually went wrong nobody knows.or i might be missing something. The more worrying lacuna in India is the lack of an indigenous manufacturing base for critical equipment hope we fill this gap soon.

@charlyondfi , you are talking to a Indian Navy fighter Pilot, ask lots of questions.. :)
Oh, then my due respect to him. Never been that far as a fighter pilot. Nevertheless, almost all of them, including Taiwan ones, I've met are really the most couragous people ever known - seeing them facing, eye to eye, all the volatile weather, turbulance, maintenance.issue, etc

But it's also those pilots show me how precious they must hold toward their rides. Seriously. So, I do raise my point with deem respect...

You do realize I hope Russia has your money and the ship.
I just waiting to read that Russia defaults on its obligations and retaining the Gorshkov for its own use but this will badly damage defence relations.

While theoretically they can do it however it will not be in their interest to lose one of their largest client.

Financial Penalties On Russia For Gorshkov Delay

Responding to a question on the carrier programme, A.K. Antony said, "[D]elivery of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (Gorshkov), after completion of repairs and sea trials, would be made in the last quarter of 2013. The aircraft carrier was subjected to extensive trials for the first time for 108 days from 8th June 2012 to 23rd September 2012, with a part of the Indian crew on board, undergoing training during the sea trials. While a substantial scope of ship's equipment and aviation trials were completed during this period, the main propulsion plant trials to full power could not be completed due to defects encountered on boiler section. Rectification of the defect is likely to take six months. Liquidated Damages (LD) clause for delays in delivery is incorporated in the contract. As per contract, LD is to be ascertained and levied within six months of ship's delivery."
