The Akula subs looks like one complicated beast specially from Engineering POV.

Wonder how they end up making such beast ..The US , Russian and Western countries that build like Nuclear Boats must be really good with Engineering stuff

Well, that's why they say anything to do with high tech military stuff takes at least 30 years to mature before building something world class.

Well it took Russian almost 45 Years after putting their first Nuclear submarine at Sea to reach Akula standards be it engineering , reactor , acoustics , sensors/sonars ,automation etc.

Its all pain sweat and blood for them and even for US both had spent huge amount of money and resources and also lost subs in accident in achieving their goals.

Yeah. We can't catch up with the rest of them without help and that was the purpose of Arihant.

US, Russia, France and UK are too far ahead in this field. The Chinese are way ahead of us too.

India May Take Second Akula-Class Sub On Lease

India May Take Second Akula-Class Sub On Lease

Indian defense minister A.K. Antony announced during commission ceremony of nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra (SSN Nerpa) that there was a proposal to take second Russian-built submarine on lease. According to him, the offer is being presently considered.

The offer was made, but the decision has not been taken so far, Antony told reporters. Although he did not specify who had made that proposal, some sources say that did Russia several years ago. Certainly, the price is not a problem. According to Antony, India can afford it [the second submarine].

Russian-built Project 971I nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra is taken on lease for 10 years. The submarine and her 84-men crew arrived in India on April 31 after the 50-day long trip from Vladivostok.

Indeed, India initially planned to lease two Akula-class nuclear submarines meant for Russian Navy. The contract was tied in 2003 and provided leasing of only one sub. Reportedly, the reason was high price. Overall contract cost is about $1 bln.

Ah! Just get the thing. Nothing like another Akula prowling the waters. It is a proven "Shark."

The slight hump on top of sail is interesting as that is only seen in Indian Akula

Very beautiful picture though as a close up of Sail with people on top gives you a good prespective on how big these things are , for eg look at the size of periscope

I really want to hear from Navy on how Chakra is performing get some reviews and pros and cons of this baby.

Don't try to estimate submarine weaponry, it is nearly impossible to do that without official data.

Both pics are from Ria Novosti. It is just a news agency.
