What is the purpose of having above-water ships (except for carrier escorts) in a Navy? Why can't the IN be made almost entirely of SSN's and SSBN's?

They have already tested the reactor long ago , this will only be a cock and bull show for the press!
in fact most weapons systems are already tested platforms before being presented to the press so that failures and subsequent negative press can be minimized( we still have failures but very few relatively)
I may also add that, media and general public is shown one step behind or the actual development about one year behind.

Let the confusion continue on ATV we want our enemy to be keep on guessing and putting tents while we emerge on south China sea and put nano satellite though SLBM.
How can Submarine help nano satellites be put in space?

It means we will have couple of few back up communication systems ready in case our present systems are blown off the orbit by the red rockets ...
check this
We go from here to many other missiles which will have the capability for MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) for anti-satellite system, which will also be built using this technology for launching micro, mini and nano satellites to meet the requirement of the armed forces on very, very short notice," he said.

Have seen this picture earlier . I am expecting some clear ones showing the entire sub after the sea trials .
Difficult to say, Indian Navy wont want to show off unless it got ATV 2 first.

What is the latest news on K-15 and K-4 SLBM? I have heard that K-15 is waste because of its limited range but K-4 is a more potent weapon. India should go for 13,000 KM SLBM so that INS Arihant can fire at enemies from the safe distance of our Indian coast.

Rumours indicate that ATV-2 has already completed fabrication and installation of equipment (less the reactor). Then there is also the problem that even the latest information/rumour is itself as much as 6-12 months old by some accounts. For all we know, the ATV-2 could be at the dock, conducting trials.

The only reason we even know of the ATV-2 being fabricated (in may,2011) was a mishap, else we'd still be in the dark. There is no info on the third as of now.

Well it is better to start our line of ATV and make one sub every two or three years. L&T is doing good job and i think time taken will be further shrink to 2 years or so. Having nuke subs with SLBM is an national asset, not just navel asset.

I doubt it will happen. The S-3 is the last of the current series, and all were undertaken nearly simultaneously. The S-4 & S-5 will feature a larger design, a higher tonnage and a higher payload than the originals. As such they will have to be designed and fabricated differently. The earlier experience will help, but the build time will not be drastically reduced.

My guess is that the IN will wait for a few years to see and learn from the first set, before going for the next set. Maybe 4-5 years IMHO. So the S-4 &S-5 would probably begin construction by 2018-19.

Just FYI, the IN will have deployment and operational control of the SSBN, but its Nuclear weapons will strictly be under the control of the SFC, with an officer from the SFC serving onboard as the strategic weapons officer.

K15 is limited by range and will be primary weapon of Arihant till K4 become operational.

Arihant will not be able to carry a 13,000 km range SLBM as the submarine is small.

From the news reports , it may not be able to even carry A6.
