Apparently these are part of the roads that were built in the last three years in arunachal.
No wonder BJP is winning elections in North east...

Wow! What a transformation in the last few years. When I was there, we were saddled with rotten pot holed single-way roads. In fact most were dirt tracks which became impassable during the monsoons.

BOGIBEEL READY TO BRING ASSAM-ARUNACHAL CLOSER

More than 16 years in making, the country’s longest rail-cum-road Bogibeel bridge in Assam is now almost complete. Once operational, it would considerably reduce the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The dedication of the Rs 6,000 crore national project will be done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortly.

The foundation stone of the 5-km Bogibeel bridge on Brahmaputra was laid by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Not only the people of the North-East but also the entire country is waiting for this multi-technology and strategically important bridge, officials said.

The bridge will facilitate connectivity between north and south banks of the Brahmaputra in the eastern region of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. A distance of about 600 km now being covered between the two parts will be cut short merely by 40km.

The Defence logistics along the Indo-Sino border is also set to improve after the bridge connects Dibrugarh to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh. According to rail officials, the ambitious projects is both a symbol of development in the North-East as well as part of a strategic move to solve logistical issues for the armed forces stationed along the China border to get supplies from Tezpur. India has 3,488-km long land boundary with China with almost 75 per cent of it falls in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Bogibeel bridge, originally scheduled to be inaugurated in 2009, is being constructed since 2002.

“The Northeastern Frontier Railway has over the years worked under difficult conditions. There was an economic blockade in Manipur once upon a time that too hampered a lot,” said Mohinder Singh, project incharge.

Singh said work is on in full swing and laying of tracks has been completed. Work on the road project is now in progress.

The cost of the project shot up from Rs 1,700 crore to Rs 6,000 crore and deadlines were missed quite a number of times.

Besides this, the other projects in the North-East like construction of railway tracks to Imphal in Manipur would be completed by 2020.

Further, land acquisition is on in Nagaland and the Final Local Survey Work is progressing for train line to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

On extension of tracks from Dimapur to Kohima, Railway Board Publicity Director Ved Prakash said land for 17 km has already been acquired and it is being acquired for the rest of the land.

For the railway line to Tawang bordering Tibet, he said the Final Local Survey Work is progressing and two more years would be required for completion.

India to beat Japan this year; to have Asia’s second-largest power capacity
Fueled by a rapid rollout of coal-fired power generation, India will have a power capacity of 363.32 gigawatts in 2018, overtaking Japan.

With a rapid roll-out of coal generation, India is all set to overtake Japan and to have Asia’s second-largest power capacity, data show. Fueled by a rapid rollout of coal-fired power generation, India will have a power capacity of 363.32 gigawatts in 2018, Bloomberg reported quoting a BMI Research report. India’s capacity will increase by a whopping 69% through 2027 and coal will remain the mainstay, making up about 75% of the mix, the report said.

By 2020, India is expected to surpass even the United States, which is the second largest producer in the world. The government recently achieved the historic target of 100% village electrification. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Saubhagya scheme, the government aims to provide electricity to all households. This means an uptick in domestic demand for power in coming years, which is expected to be met by coal-fired power generation and by tapping abundant renewable resources.

“India’s power sector will remain dominated by coal over the coming decade despite significant growth in cleaner sources – notably nuclear, non-hydro renewables and natural gas,” an analysis by BMI research said last year. India’s power sector will remain dominated by coal over our 10-year forecast period, with coal making up a share of just less than 70 per cent to the total power generation mix by 2026.

“Despite the prevalence of coal-fired power generation, we expect significant growth in alternative, cleaner power sources over the next 10 years – albeit from a lower base – notably in the natural gas, nuclear and non-hydropower renewables sectors,” BMI research notes.

“This is in line with government efforts to reduce pollution across the country and international pressure to boost environmental policy,” it added.

India energy minister flags massive 100GW solar tender
India’s energy minister R K Singh has flagged a massive solar tender of 100GW (yes, that’s 100,000MW) – by far the biggest in the world, as the fastest growing energy consumer turns increasingly to renewables to satisfy its enormous needs.

“The biggest (renewable energy) tender was floated in Spain. We brought out single tender of 10,000MW which would be opened in July,” Singh said at a function in New Delhi this week, as reported by The Economic Times, the main financial daily.

“Now (we) will bring out a bid (tender) of one lakh MW which would also include solar manufacturing and storage (output).” A lakh is an Indian measurement meaning 100,000 units.

Singh did not give a direct timetable for the new tender, and given its size it would likely the a few years, but he did say that India will over achieve its renewable energy target of 175GW by 2022.

According to the Economic Times, Singh said India has already installed 70GW of renewable energy capacity and had about 12.5GW under construction.

“India is making rapid strides in the field of renewable energy and we will overshoot the target of 175GW renewable energy by 2022,” he was quoted as saying at the opening of a small 1.5MW solar plant.

Singh noted that 20 cities in India are ranked among the most polluted in the world and there is an urgent need to reduce fossil fuel use, and to deliver electricity to every household by the end of this year.

“This is a perfect illustration of the ambition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” vision,” said Tim Buckley, analyst at IEEFA.

“By offering a multi-year solar development pipeline bigger than the world has ever seen before, India will become the solar manufacturing hub of the world (behind only China), leveraging its well-educated, low-cost workforce.”

Buckley noted that the economies of scale will be huge, and would require total finance of around $US100 billion.

“This might sound far-fetched, but it was reported only last week that SoftBank of Japan was exploring lifting its $US20 billion commitment to Indian solar by 2022 to $US100 billion,” Buckley said.

This follows SoftBank’s alliance with the Saudi Crown Prince in a proposal for US$200bn of solar in Saudi Arabia by 2030.

Buckley said that given renewables both wind and solar – are already 10-20 per cent cheaper than existing thermal (coal) power generation in India, and half the price of imported coal-fired power, this makes entirely economic sense for India.

It also allows India to massively exceed its Paris Climate Agreement commitments, and enter the world stage alongside China as the global leader in low emissions industries of the future.

Meanwhile, the Australian federal government still wants to open up ten of the world’s largest new, low-quality thermal coal mines in the Galilee Basin.

“It is past time for Australia to realise the speed of the technology and finance led energy system transformation currently accelerating before our eyes,” Buckley said.

India pondering 100GW ISTS solar tender linked with manufacturing
India is currently mulling over a plan for a 100GW solar tender to be linked with manufacturing, but with no timeframe put down as yet.

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) secretary Anand Kumar, while speaking to PV Tech at a side event at Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany, said that the capacity of manufacturing is yet to be decided upon, but he confirmed the announcement of power minister R.K. Singh from an event in Delhi earlier this week.

Kumar said the idea so far floated is to bid out the 100GW capacity all in one go and for the projects to be connected to the Interstate Transmission System (ISTS) in a pan-India manner. This is a vastly ambitious scheme, given that India has been incrementally working towards a huge target of 100GW of solar overall by 2022 and with many trials and tribulations on the way. Kumar did, however, hint that the power minister will soon be unveling another enormous solar target for 2030, in which the 100GW tender could fit in.

2018 has seen India focus less on its solar park initiative and more on standalone ISTS projects for which there are multiple gigawatts of tenders already out. Unlike solar parks, these projects require the developer to acquire land, secure transmission connectivity and take on other risks. This week the Ministry of Power granted solar procurers the option of extending financial close, land acquisition and project completion timeframes to give developers more time to overcome these difficult challenges.

The announcement comes shortly after Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) issued a tender for 5GW of PV manufacturing in India to be linked with 10GW of solar project development. This is due to be opened in July, added Kumar.

If this really goes through, would lead to a lot of savings savings and a reduction in the grid's load.

Centre wants ACs' default setting at 24°C to save power

Soon, air-conditioners (ACs) sold in the country could come with a default setting of 24 degrees Celsius and will allow temperature setting between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius only as part of a campaign to promote greater efficiency in electricity consumption for cooling. ACs will also have labels indicating the optimum temperature setting that is best suited for savings in power bill and health of consumers.

The power ministry intends to issue an advisory to all commercial and public establishments to keep temperature setting at 24 degrees.

This Rs 8,000-crore solar scheme may help Indian firms boost manufacturing
4Nishtha Saluja, ET Bureau | Updated: Jul 23, 2018, 06.12 AM IST
  • solar energy scheme, which has been deftly crafted to mandate local manufacturing without violating WTO’s trade rules, is in the final stages of approval, and will help local industry withstand the onslaught of cheap imports, senior government officials said.

The Rs 8,000-crore scheme will be a significant boost for Indian manufacturers, who are also waiting for the imposition of a safeguards duty on solar gear.

The local industry has suffered because WTO, acting on a US complaint, ruled that India had violated trade rules by mandating use of locally made cells and modules in its national solar mission.

Renewable energy is a hot area of trade tussles with many trying to dominate the sector that is expected to flourish as reliance on coal and oil dwindles. “The scheme is in final stages of consultation with various government departments and ministries, including finance, commerce, and the Prime Minister’s Office,” a government official told ET on condition of anonymity.

The scheme has already been cleared by the Expenditure Finance Committee, which is part of the department of expenditure in the finance ministry, another official said.

s part of the scheme, Central government’s public sector undertakings will call for tenders for setting up power projects, and the electricity generated through these will be used for their own consumption. “The scheme has been carefully designed to be compliant with the WTO rules.

The government can mandate use of locally manufactured components as part of the scheme since the power is for the government’s own consumption,” the official added. “It will help bridge the difference between domestic manufacturing capacity in India and our imports.”
The scheme will have an implementation period of four years, and by 2022, it will ensure a minimum manufacturing capacity of 3 GW of solar cells per year, which is the current size of the domestic solar cell market in India.

If approved, it will bring relief to the domestic solar manufacturers who, on account of injury from imports of solar components from China, Malaysia and Taiwan, are lobbying for a safeguards duty on these imports.

In the latest development of the safeguards case, the directorate general of trade restrictions last week recommended up to 25% safeguard duty on imports from China and Malaysia for a period of two years. “Even if the safeguard duty is imposed, increased costs can be easily absorbed by developers as prices of Chinese solar cells are going to crash,” the official said, referring to the recent Chinese government decision to scale down solar capacity addition. Chinese manufacturers, as a result, will try and sell existing capacity at cheaper prices on account of a lacklustre demand in their home country.

India targets oil traders for $1.5 billion emergency oil reserve

The two new reserves include 4 million tons of storage at Chandikhol in the eastern state of Odisha and a 2.5 million-ton facility at Padur in southern India’s Karnataka. (Representative Image)
India is seeking $1.5 billion of investments from global oil producers and traders to build additional emergency crude reserves that will act as a buffer against volatility in oil prices.

The plan is to build underground caverns that can hold a combined 6.5 million tons of crude at two locations, Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd. Chief Executive Officer H.P.S. Ahuja said. The state-run ISPRL will collaborate with private entities, who will invest in the project, he said.
Getting investors to build the storage facilities will lessen the strain on state finances and help Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government meet its budget goals, while expanding strategic petroleum reserves to shield the economy from oil-price volatility. India, which meets almost 85 percent of its crude needs through imports, this month cut taxes on fuel sales to lower the burden of high oil prices on consumers.

“We are taking the commercial model for building and filling the caverns, which will provide opportunity to the investor to make some profits,” Ahuja said. “India will continue to reserve first right over the crude stored in these caverns.”

The two new reserves include 4 million tons of storage at Chandikhol in the eastern state of Odisha and a 2.5 million-ton facility at Padur in southern India’s Karnataka.

Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves, which was formed in 2006, is scouting investors to fill the caverns at Padur. It will hold roadshows in New Delhi, Singapore and London this month to draw investors for the new caverns as well as filling the Padur facility.

“Strategic reserves are crucial for a growing consumer like India,” Ahuja said. “The new SPRs will be sufficient to cover the country’s oil needs for another 12 days.”

Finally!!!
few people in dharavi who have patta to their land are about to become crorepatis..

let's hope this becomes a success so that same economic model can be applied to all major slums in the country

Dharavi redevelopment: Maharashtra to set up SPV, invite global bids

The Maharashtra cabinet on October 17 approved setting up of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to fast-track the long-pending development of Asia's largest slum Dharavi, located in Mumbai.

The government has also decided to invite global tenders for the purpose.

As per rough estimates, thousands of residents of Dharavi are eligible for new houses after redevelopment.

The decision assumes significance in the view of Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections slated next year, as Dharavi, spread over 200 hectares, is a major vote bank in the city.

Dharavi is one of the ten assembly segments located in the Mumbai City district. It is a part of the Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha constituency, currently represented by Rahul Shewale of the Shiv Sena.

Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad has been representing the assembly segment since the last three terms.

The project to redevelop the slum cluster, located in central Mumbai, was first conceived in 2003 but is yet to see the light of the day.

Dharavi redevelopment has been a topic of discussion since last two decades. The previous efforts for getting the developers for the project was twice unsuccessful.

S V R Srinivas, chief executive of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Authority (DRPA) told PTI Tuesday that the government will be an "active participant and a stake-holder" in the proposed SPV.

"Global tenders will be invited. The new initiative will be a holistic, integrated master plan," he said.

Previously, the slum was supposed to be developed into five sectors.

In 2012, the then Congress-NCP government had given the responsibility to redevelop Sector 5 of the slum cluster to the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA). However, there was not much progress since then.

In another decision, the Cabinet has approved setting up of one lakh agriculture pumps for farmers that run on solar power over a period of three years.

"Farmers who own agriculture land up to five acres will get solar pumps with the capacity of 3 HP (Horse Power) and those holding more than five acres of 5 HP," said an official in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Those farmers who have access to permanent water resources can avail this facility.

"Farmers belonging to the 'general' category will have to pay 10 per cent of the total cost for the pumps while those belonging to SC and ST categories have to bear 5 per cent of the total cost," the official said.

A total of 25,000 pumps will be installed in the first phase in 2018-19, 50,000 pimps in 2019-20 and 25,000 pumps in 2020-21, he said.

The cabinet also approved Rs 1689.50 crore for the Aruna Medium Irrigation project at Vaibhavwadi in Sindhudurg district under the Pradhanmantri Krushi Sinchan Yojana.

After completion of the project, an area of 5310 hectares in Vaibhavwadi and Rajapur talukas would come under irrigation.

Similarly, the government approved Rs 635 crore for the upcoming Kudali Medium Irrigation Project in Satara district, the official said.

The project envisages construction of two dams, he said, adding that the government is also preparing four lift irrigation schemes.

A total of 5237 hectares of area in 42 villages will be benefitted due to irrigation," the official said.
