There was a plan to set up ORR for Kolkata back in 2006 under the Left Govt. Now it seems to be covered under various National Highway Projects :
- Haldia-Panskura : Already Done with NH 116+Nh16.
- Panskura-Arambagh-Bardhaman: Will be covered under Proposed Kharagpur-Siliguri ( Moregram) Economic Corridor.
- Krishnanager-Bongoan-Basirhat: Will be covered under 4 lane NH 312 ( Jalangi-Barishat ) Highway.
The only gaps remaining are :
- Basirhat-Canning
- Canning-Raichawk-Haldia
- Bardhaman-Nawadwip-Krishnanger
These gaps are currently connected through 2-lane State Highways which needs to be upgraded to NH level Standard.
Bongoan (Petrapole) & Bashirhat (Ghojadanga) are two important Indo-Bangla Border Crossings.
Canning : Gateway to Sunderbans ( Royal Bengal Tiger Reserve and World largest mangrove forest).
Richowk : An riverside resort area for weekend gateways and villas.
Halida : Important Ports:
Nawadwip: Famous for Nawadwip dham ( Religious Site)
Krishnanager: Important Historial Town famous for Krishnanager Rajbari (My father's hometown)
As you can see this ORR covers very important areas for International trade, seaport, tourism and religious sites.
Out of Top 4 Kolkata is the only one missing ORR. I think they should start the remaining section work and make it as access control. Also don't forget to construct service roads.
