India debuts largest nuclear reactor with more planned
Target should be to increase the Electricity production.
China has nearly 5 times our capacity. With increasing industries and IT sector we need more stable electricity supply.
Rural areas can be powered through Renewable but Industries need stable and constant, supply of electricity.

Power sector has been working at a fast pace since last 10 years now. There is surplus energy production in many states now that they are selling to other neighboring states.
Even earlier we had many thermal power plants but they used to not run on maximum efficiency due to coal shortage, even when they would had coal hey would run plant only 7-8 hours each day due to political setup of the eras.
When Piyush Goyal came to ministry he ensured that all coal trains reach to power plants without major stoppage and plant should report on coal usage and energy production per day. Suddenly the electricity production in UP shot up through roof. There were noise from UP that the hen SP party was not happy with this sudden increase in electricity production. I still don't understand their logic of keeping the state in dark upto 7-8 hours on average each day.

installed capacity in aug 2014 was 245 gw, it is 375 Gw in Dec 2020. That’s an addition of 130 gw which includes upgrading old coal power plants + renewables.

Lots of work going on in upgrading transmission lines as well.

Power cuts(if any for commercial establishments) are happening at local discom level, And not many discoms in the country are running in profits. this will take time.

since money is a limited resource, might as well GoI Finish their national level transmission lines upgrades first, and then focus will shift on local transmission if DISCOMs are not having cash to do it on their own.

many moving parts, for ex: Piyush Goyal has been trying for sometime that coal power plants are allotted coal mines near to their location to reduce generation costs and increase predictable raw material supply. this transition itself will take years because power plants will have their old contracts to cater for.

CSIR – CMERI dedicates Solar – Biodiesel Minigrid System to Nation

CSIR-CMERI-Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery has developed Off-gridSolar Biodiesel Hybrid Minigrid of 50kW peak capacity system for providing 24X7 power to Center for Excellence in Farm Machinery (CoEFM) Residential Colony at Gill Road, Ludhiana (Punjab). Prof. (Dr.) Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR - CMERI inaugurated the system on 1st February 2021.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Hirani said that currently major share of the installed power capacity of our country is from fossil fuelsources like coal, diesel etc., which have serious implications on country's energy security and environmental pollution. These high power centralized generation systems also warrant investment on expensive Transmission & Distribution infrastructure leading to higher transmission losses. In this scenario, localized regionspecific distributed generation systems like Minigrids with small scale Renewable Energy Sources can be potential generators of electricity near load centres and can help in addressing energy needs of local communities. These type of systems can be a unique solution for uninterrupted power in remote areas, villages, hilly area etc.

In addition,Solar Biodiesel Hybrid Minigrid system developed at CSIR-CMERI alsohas applications in Smart city projects, because of its inherent smart features with respect to integration of different sources. Unlike in rural areas, power requirement of domestic loads in cities are higher along with huge fluctuations due to varied usage patterns making the power balancing a challenging issue.

Experiments were conducted in the CoEFM residential colony during different times of day, month and different seasons to understand the performance of the developed system under different conditions of loading, solar radiation etc. Both Solar Photovoltaics and Biodiesel are renewable in nature and can help in reducing pollution.Solar PV systems installed on different capacities of Solar Trees (2 Nos of 3.05kWp, 1Nos of 8.125kWp & 3 Nos of 11.375kWp) use less land space which is of great advantage in urban areas.

Prof. Hirani also informed that recently developed Fully Automatic Biodiesel Plant of capacity 1 ton per day (8 hours) which can produce Biodiesel from any feedstock (waste vegetable oil, Used Cooking oil, Animal Tallow etc.) is being used to produce necessary fuel for running generators. He further added that these type of systemsalso help in employment generation. This developed system is not only lighting the residential colony but also being used to run 10hp& 5hp agricultural pumps. Future plan is to increase its capacity through addition of more number of Solar Trees and Battery Banks. Other sources of energy like wind energy and Biogas can also be integrated into this system. This type of development empower many of the local communities in rural and urban areas to become self-reliant in energy and move India one step forward towards “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

All mega infra projects seem to happening in the north, modiji south ko bhool gaye kya?

other than Polavaram in andhra and mission Bhagirathi in Telangana, I am not aware of any mega projects in south.
Did mission Bhagirathi have anything to do with center? I was under the impression that it was totally TG govt funded.

My reference is about the mega project itself, not the source of funding.

More over centre is always the sovereign guarantor of loans for such projects.

NHAI contractor creates World Record for maximum amount of road-paving concrete laid in 24 hours

An NHAI contractor has created a World Record for the laying of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) for a four-lane highway of 2,580 meters length within 24 hours. Starting at 8 am on 1st February, 2021, they finished the job, totalling 2,580 meters X 4 lanes i.e. approximately 10.32 lane kilometres by 8 am next morning. With a width of 18.75 meters, as much an area as 48,711 square meters of concrete was laid for the expressway in 24 hours. The highest quantity of concrete laid in 24 hours – 14,613 Cubic Meter was also achieved.

The feat by the contractor – Patel Infrastructure Limited-has been recognized by both the India Book of Records, and the Golden Book of World Records.

The record is part of the greenfield Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai 8-lane Expressway project, and was carried out by the world’s largest fully automatic ultra-modern concrete paver machine.

The feat comes in the backdrop of the Ministry having constructed 8,169 km of National Highways (NHs) from April 2020 to 15 January 2021 in the current financial year 2020-21, i.e. with a speed of about 28.16 km per day. During the same period in the last fiscal, 7,573 km roads were constructed, with a speed of 26.11 km per day.The Ministry is hopeful that with such pace it should be able to cross construction target of 11,000 km by 31 March.

Nuclear is the way. I hope planners realize that 25-30% nuclear is better than 25-30% renewables.

India's power grid needs to be developed. It also requires one state to sell electricity to another state, some more, some less, and there are too many losses in the middle.
China has a smart grid, where all the electricity generated in the country is connected to the whole grid, and then all the users use electricity from the grid. There is one price for residential electricity and one price for industrial electricity in the whole country, and the whole electricity market is a unified market.Reduce pollution by reducing thermal power generation when electricity consumption is low

India’s biggest Tunnel Boring Machine is building Mumbai Coastal Road project; details

Under one of the biggest green recreational open spaces in Mumbai, the coastline at the southernmost tip of the financial capital is changing at the speed of 3 metres per day. The country’s biggest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)- Mavala has been at work for almost a month, 20 metres under Priyadarshini Park at Nepean Sea Road, according to an IE report. From there, the TBM is burrowing metre-by-metre under Malabar Hill, towards its main challenge, an undersea portion aligned to Marine Drive, as part of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, worth Rs 12,721 crore. The project, comprising a road, a tunnel as well as an interchange, aims to link South Mumbai to the end of Worli, of the Worli-Bandra Sea Link through a high-speed corridor.
