Fincantieri and the Ministry of Defense of Indonesia today signed a contract that covers supply of 6 new FREMM class frigates and 2 second-hand Maestrale class frigates.

The contract will involve the participation of Italian company Leonardo and Indonesia’s PT-PAL Shipyard (Java island).

The modernization of the two Maestrale class vessels, which Fincantieri will acquire from the Italian Navy once decommissioned, will also be carried out in Italy.

Maestrale-class is a class of light frigates built in the 1980s by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. Eight were built and the last of the class was commissioned in 1985. The four still in service with the Navy are set to be replaced by the Bergamini-class.

FREMM is a class of multi-purpose frigates designed by Fincantieri and Naval Group for Italian and French Navy. However, FREMM built by Fincantieri are heavier and more armed than their sisters of the French Navy. The FREMM specifications for the Indonesian Navy are still unknown.

Fincantieri FREMM 144m-long ships have a displacement of 6700 tonnes, maximum speed of around 27 knots and range of 6000nm at 15 knots. They can accommodate 145 crew members and hav2 two hangars for aircraft. These warships come fitted with various weapons including 6 MBDA Aster 15 and 30 missiles; 2 × Leonardo OTO Melara 76/62 mm Davide/Strales guns; 2 × Leonardo Oto Melara/Oerlikon KBA 25/80 mm remote weapon systems; 8 × MBDA Teseo\Otomat Mk-2/A anti-ship and land attack missiles; 2 × triple Leonardo B-515/3 launcher for MU 90 torpedoes.

Indo-Pacific is getting stuffed with top notch naval equipment.

Ya'll Nibbiars it's excludes most of the Weapon's systems. And compared to this the Project 17A is much affordable.
either way IN better assume Indonesia is a potential threat in future and prepare for it, rather than assuming it not being a threat.

Just like pak, Indonesia will only become more Islamist RW in the future. if global experience of past 30 years are taken into consideration, wherever fundamentals of democracy are pitted against fundamentals of Islamists, Islamists seems to be winning.

Disagree, we are handling many Islamist nations like UAE, Qatar, Saudi as well as slightly hardcore Islamists like Malaysia, Iran, Iraq (pre-US invasion), and even Afganistan.

Even last year we arm-twisted Malaysia when Mahathir made an idiotic statement on Kashmir.

The problem might come if China somehow buys out Indonesia, but I don't see that happening because they have enmity because of land/sea disputes.

yes, this possibility also exists during Cold War 2.0.

but I am talking about post Cold War 2.0 scenario.

irrespective of China wins or loses Cold War 2.0, Indonesia will be an issue. if China wins CW2.0, whole of SE Asia will be vassal states to CCP, if China loses CW 2.0 then Indonesia will anyways be in control of Islamists.

either way we are the receiving end of bad outcomes for us.

Nilgiri follow up Should be planned with a lot modular construction , all those design faults of nilgiri removed , introduction of indigenous system in radar ,missile , sonar , mission computer , satcom ,gun , ciws , helicopter , and more parts of propulsion .

And this time order should be above 12 units with most similarities with nilgiri ,and same shipyard , 6 each will be delivered faster as well as cheaper

Indonesia operated many SIGMA class frigates and Corvettes from DAMEN Netherlands.
2x SIGMA 10514 frigate
5or 6 SIGMA 9113 Corvettes.

Other frigates in Indonesian Navy holdings are old and were probably procured used. So this deal is the replacement for those ships.

Interestingly, Indonesia chose heavy frigates instead of increasing the SIGMA frigate numbers.

These FREMM frigates will vastly increase the capabilities of Indonesian Navy.

What are the timelines for this aquisition?
And it probably will be built in Indonesian shipyard.
