Indo- France air exercise Garuda-IV to begin in June

NEW DELHI (BNS): India and France will begin the joint air combat exercise 'Garuda-IV ', from June 14 to 25 at Istres airbase in France, a media report said.

According to The Times of India, IAF will bring its six Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, two IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft and an IL-78 mid-air refueller at the joint air combat exercise.

The exercise comes at a time when India and France are all set to ink the around Rs 10,000 crore deal to upgrade the 56 Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft in IAF's combat fleet.

France will upgrade the first four to six Mirages and the rest fifty will be upgraded in India by Hindustan Aeronautics under transfer of technology, the report said.

The joint air exercise 'Garuda' was started in February 2003 at the Indian Air Base of Gwalior. The exercise commences biennially to foster relationship between both the countries.

When are we getting Rafale with improved engines?

Improved engines are already here with the ECO engine. The uprated thrust will come into service in 2014.

Armand mate, these exercises are welcome but did you really have to do us over in the Mirage 2000 upgrade? I mean you really shafted us there. Doesn't help you win friends for Rafale in either proposals.

Indo-French joint Air Exercise 'GARUDA' begins in France

NEW DELHI: The India -France joint Air Exercise 'GARUDA' began on Monday at Istres Air Base in southern France.

The Exercise 'GARUDA' will continue till June 25.

According to the Indian Air Force, during the Exercise Garuda, the Indian Air Force and French Air Force would be engaged in various missions ranging from close combat engagement of large forces, slow mover protection, and protecting and engaging High Value Aerial Assets.


According to the IAF Contingent Commander, Group Captain J Mishra, "The focus of the Air Exercise is learning from each other's best practices. The Air Defence operations would be central to our various maneuvers."

"These would take place in AWACS and non-AWACS environment. The intensity of the exercise would be gradually increased throughout its duration so that we learn and absorb maximum from the exercise," he added.

During the exercise the IAF's Special Forces 'the Garuds' would also be proactively participating and shall be carrying out jumps along with the French Special Forces.

The IL-76 aircraft which are an integral part of the exercise flying missions would practice static line drops with the French Special Forces.

It may be recalled that the IAF is participating with six SU-30 MKIs, three IL-78s and one IL-76 aircraft.

The Istres Air Base is a large base located near Istres, North of Marseille in the Bouches-du-Rhone department France.

The base houses some of the world's finest fighters and helicopters and serves multiple functions, including a repair facility and training grounds.

The landing strip of this airbase is said to be the longest in Europe.

The Istres Air Base was built before the World War II and has been of immense historical and operational importance.

It may also be recalled that the Republic of Singapore Air Force is also participating in the Ex-Garuda for the first time with the F-16 Aircraft.

The French Air Force assets such as the mid -air refueller have commenced their participation in the exercise.

Op Garuda: IAF tests skills against French, Singaporean air power

Six Indian Sukhoi-30MKI multi-role fighters, supported by IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft and IL-78 midair refuellers, tore into the skies over France on Monday to kick off the joint combat exercise with the French and Singaporean air forces.

In the fortnight-long 'Garuda-IV' exercise, being held at the Istres airbase north of Marseille, France has deployed its Rafael and Mirage-2000 fighters, while Singapore is participating with F-16s.

"The focus is to learn from each other. Air defence operations will be central to our various manoeuvres. These will take place in both AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) and non-AWACS environments," said IAF contingent commander, Group Captain J Mishra.

"The intensity of the exercise will be gradually increased so that we learn and absorb maximum from it," he said, adding that the fighters will be carrying out "combat missions, engagement of large forces and protection of high-value aerial assets", among other things.

IAF special forces, called Garuds, will also be participating in the exercise, by paradropping along with French special forces. The overall objective of the exercise is to further enhance interoperability among the air forces.

The exercise comes at a time when India and France are trying to finetune the around Rs 10,000 crore deal to upgrade the 56 Mirage-2000 fighter jets in IAF's combat fleet. The first four to six Mirages will be upgraded in France, with the rest 50 or so being upgraded in India by Hindustan Aeronautics under transfer of technology.

India's defence ties with France are quite broad-based, including as they do the over Rs 20,000 crore project to build six French Scorpene submarines currently underway at Mazagon Docks.

France has also offered its multi-role Rafael fighter for the ongoing competition in the gigantic $10.4 billion project to supply 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to IAF.

Garuda a 'milestone' in India-French defence cooperation

A 12-day joint aerial exercise between the Indian, French and Singaporean air forces, currently underway at the Istres Air Base in the South of France and which has brought together the world's best combat jets like the the Sukhoi SU-30MKI, the F-16, the Rafale and the Mirage, entered its final phase Wednesday.

Exercise Garuda-2010, which began June 13, is a 'milestone in the India-French defence cooperation', an Indian Air Force (IAF) statement issued here quoted Air Commodore S.K Ghotia, air attache at the Indian embassy in France, as saying.

'This has been the widest scope ever accomplished between the two nations,' added Ghotia, also the chief coordinator of the exercise.

During the exercise, the three air forces have engaged in a variety of missions ranging from close combat, engagement of large forces, slow mover protection and protecting and engaging high value aerial assets.

'Over 60 missions have been successfully flown,' an IAF spokesperson said.

The IAF's SU-30s took part in the high value airborne asset protection and protection busting missions.

The IL-78 refuellers of the IAF and their KC-135 counterparts of the French Air Force also participated in various missions carrying out refuelling of the fighters. Refuelling denials were also practised, making these missions more difficult.

The SU-30s were subjected to the 'swing roles' where the same aircraft simultaneously performs offensive as well as defensive roles, the spokesperson said.

The E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) provided radar coverage during the exercise.

'Our participation in the exercise has reinforced the manner in which we conduct our operations. It has also helped us refine our doctrine,' said Air Marshal K.K. Nohwar of the IAF who visited the Indian contingent in France.

There was a slim chance for any country to operate in isolation 'especially in a co-operative defence scenario', added Nohwar, the air officer commanding-in-chief of the Shillong-based Eastern Air Command.

'Knowing each other's best practices in terms of tactics, techniques and procedures is the main objective of this exercise, which is also a part of the on-going Indo-French defence cooperation,' he said.

The IAF spokesperson said Indian pilots who participated in the exercise 'gained tremendous learning experience'.

'The engineers, technicians and all other members of the team have also benefitted substantially.'

The IAF contingent is expected to return by July 3, 2010.

Did Rafale teach them some lessons as M2000s did at previous Garuda? As I recall IAF saying back then, "we realised that while we were flying the same aircraft (Mirage-2000) as the French, they were using it in a somewhat different way and getting good results...this formed a part of our learning process.'

I think that is code. We would want to embarrass a little with Rafale to make it look good for MRCA.
