The carrier is so small too only 45k, right? The F-18E is quite a bit larger than the Rafale. Longer, wider and much heavier.

US ships are big have space for bigger planes.

Does anybody know why the F-18E is even being considered or being offered for that matter?

Vikrant is not any optimisation of existing design buddy it is first Cv of BHARAT in the true sense. Only five or six nations currently have the capability of manufacturing an aircraft carrier — With Vikrant we joins this elite club now. Don't fall for size its more than potent for our needs today. I don’t dispute role of large aircraft carrier, but taking war to another part of the world one needs more than one super Cv the costs to run it are insane. Wait for 2050 when we achieve around Gdp 25k trillion in usd then we will definitely go for super Cvs groups or submarine centric is entirely debatable subject.

As for Rafale is more capable in terms of stealth payload, range, manoeuvrability higher G load,thrust to weight ratio, wing load and climb rate with lower weight. Dasault is more flexible reliable than amreekunts if you stay on this forum for enough you will know exactly why and lastly now France is part of Akhand BHARAT confirmed..

It has folding wings so it's stored footprint is not so large. It has both single seat fighters and dual seat fighter/trainers certified for CATOBAR carrier ops. If anything the Rafale M with non folding wings (deck lift tolerances very tight) and no twin seat naval variant is the weaker contender. IAF has a requirement of 18 single and 8 dual seaters. STOBAR ops aboard the Vikrant will be considerably less demanding on airframe. Also US 100K tonnage super carriers board 80 fighters, INs carriers about 45% of that number (36) with about 45% the size.

Hopefully they get a few growlers too, would love to have a few in the mix
But it's going to create an aircraft zoo. Less numbers of a type is a usually a recipe for disaster- dedicated ground handling equipment, new supply chain, dedicated simulators, dedicated weapons, new tactics. And all that knowledge useless outside a small circle of naval aviators. Whatever comes is just a stop gap between Mig29K and TEDBF. From that PoV IN should induct all 26 single seat Rafale M (or 18 only and save the change) and share the trainers with IAF. The office of CDS was created for such cross service resource utilisation optimizations. Here's another

If they go for single seats only, then I support rafale. If they buy twin seat too, as RFI says, then FA18 is the way.

Why all this drama when Navy will buy MiG-29K for obvious reasons?
Maybe to show the Russians how annoyed they are with poor service record of the 29Ks.

BTW keeping aside the logic of commonality with Vikramaditya- and no size issues on Vikrant itself, if IN buys more of a plane they are not too happy with- what does it show about INs decision making & choices?

Dude the whole aircraft carrier has poor service record, it was purchased in emergency/hurry because INS Virat was to be retired quickly and INS Virat’s aircrafts the Sea Harriers were also supposed to be retired, hence there’s no point reminding them, they very well know how worthy their equipment is and hwt are it’s limitations.

Just look at the condition of their sole aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov for example.

Lol russia doesnt even classify that as an aircraft carrier. Its a cruiser capable of carrying aircraft.

If there is no conflict then why not LCA Navy? Tho very hard to predict future.
Not fit for naval combat role hence tedbf,its time people put it to rest.
Navy should go for 18 single seat rafales if it fits all the rqmnts we can order some 6-8 naval LCA trainers instead of twin seat rafales.
18 rafale m+36 Air Force rafale should be ordered by 22-23 and that should be out last imported fighter jet

Already the navy hangars are completely occupied with Mig29Ks that spent its entire time in hangars. Now they want a fighter that can land in an Aircraft Carrier and then take-off after that in one piece. Since Vikky availability is abysmally low, they could manage till now. Not with Vikrant 2. Mig 29Ks will be fitted with UTTAM, ASTRA and UPG upgrades and will be released for IAF.

42 Mig 29Ks with ASTRA-UTTAM combo will be a great addition for IAF in terms of squadron numbers till Tejas MK2 numbers build up.

So they'll need something for both the carriers? Or is Vikramaditya going to be retired prematurely?? Isn't that a gigantic waste of $2.35B?
