Quantum Experiments using Satellite Technology (QuEST)

The age of quantum technologies is imminent and the enhancement in the computational power can pose a threat to the various cryptographic standards currently being used in secure communication, all over the world. The security of most of the widely used cryptographic algorithms are based on mathematical problems, which cannot be solved in reasonable time using classical computation. Hence, coming up with new techniques to retain the level of security in communication is the need of the hour, QKD being one of them. Lot of research is being undertaken all over the world to come up with various implementations of QKD having better key generation rate and security as well as increasing the distance over which this can be performed, which is relevant to the national security as well. Our work is motivated towards developing such technologies from an indigenous perspective.

Good going on India's 🇮🇳 Space front!!

IN-SPACe has signed an MoU with QNu Labs to develop Indigenous Quantum Tech Satellite QKD.

With this MoU, QNu Labs with the support of ISRO and IN-SPACe, aims to demonstrate Satellite QKD based quantum secure communication.

This is old news i missed but it's same QNu lab that recently signed MoU with isro and IN-SPACE singed MoU with Indian army in October 2022

Indian Army issues RFP for procurement of Quantum Key Distribution technology

The Ministry of Defence said the Indian Army has started the process of procurement of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology developed by a Bengaluru-based cybersecurity company by issuing a commercial Request for Proposal (RFP).
QKD is primarily a mechanism to undertake secure communication with a cryptographic protocol involving various components of quantum mechanics. The technology enables two sides to come up with random secret keys shared by both and known exclusively to them, so only they can use it to encrypt and decrypt messages, thus achieving a very highly-secure communication. QKD helps create a non-hackable quantum channel for creating unhackable encryption keys that are used to encrypt critical data or voice or video across the end points.
The MoD said Sunday that under the umbrella of its initiative ‘Innovation for Defence Excellence’ (iDEX) under Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), the QNu Labs, a Bengaluru-based cybersecurity start-up has broken distance barriers by innovating advanced secured communication through QKD systems. “The project was curated by iDEX-DIO with the Indian Army. After the successful trials, the Indian Army has now initiated the process of procurement of QKD systems developed by QNu Labs by issuing commercial Request For Proposal (RFP) and its deployment,” the MoD said in a press statement.



“When the country is celebrating ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, India is all set to join the league of global leaders with indigenous and more advanced quantum communication technology in order to equip its Armed Forces with high end defence,” the release added.

The Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar termed the development of indigenously QKD technology as a milestone achievement in ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal’ and a befitting success story of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, the press statement said. The Defence Secretary also applauded the efforts of the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, iDEX-DIO, Army Design Bureau and the Indian Army Signals Directorate, which have contributed in development of high end quantum technology in the country for the first time.

QNu Labs’ co-founder and CEO Sunil Gupta was quoted in the release as saying, “The vision of putting India on the forefront of deep technologies in the field of data security through the use of quantum technology has finally borne fruit. Winning the Open Challenge-2 of iDEX has provided a launching pad to QNu Labs to achieve this stellar success.”

Researchers at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) have successfully demonstrated secure communication established between a stationary source and a moving receiver using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

This breakthrough demonstration could pave the way for ground-to-satellite-based secure quantum communication in future, a statement issued by the RRI said on Saturday.


"These results, scientists say, could help India design and provide secure communication channels, especially for defence and strategic purposes, enhance cyber security and make online transactions safer than today," the statement read.

In order to achieve this feat, a team of researchers led by Prof Urbasi Sinha at the Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab deployed the indigenously developed Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) system.

The PAT assisted the ground-based source in tracking the moving receiver in this case, a terrestrial vehicle
, a few metres apart.

The successful experimental demonstration was held at RRI in early March this year, the statement read.

It added that this work is part of the Quantum Experiments using Satellite Technology (QuEST) project for which RRI has been collaborating with the UR Rao Satellite Centre of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) since 2017.

"The present demonstration is in continuation to the QuIC lab's demonstration of QKD established between two buildings located on the RRI campus using an atmospheric free space channel in February 2021, another first in India," according to the RRI.

In a satellite-based long-distance quantum communication, the ground station needs to keep the line of sight with the moving satellite, the RRI said.

"Even though the PAT system has widely been used in satellite communications, achieving the establishment of secure quantum key distribution using PAT system between a stationary source and a mobile receiver was not achieved in India before," the statement read.

"We are very happy with this new achievement. As this phase of the experiment coincided with the second wave of the COVID-19, we dealt with several issues related to changes in team members, delay in procurement and newer COVID variants. Nonetheless, the team, including members of the lab as well as the workshop and allied facilities at the institute worked tirelessly to make this happen," Prof Sinha was quoted as saying.

Raman Research Institute (RRI) has joined hands with the Indian Navy to develop secure maritime communications using quantum technologies.

The Bengaluru-based institute inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Weapons and Electronics Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE), the R&D establishment of the Indian Navy, last week.


RRI said that the MoU is five years, and under this agreement, RRI’s Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab will lead the research efforts towards developing quantum key distribution techniques that the Indian Navy could leverage in the nation’s efforts towards securing free space communications.


“I am absolutely delighted that the Indian Science and Technology ecosystem has been opening borders in recent years that enable talented and world-class researchers in the academic research institutions to contribute to the growth of Science and Technology capabilities in strategic areas of national importance. The porosity of the perceived boundary between fundamental and applied sciences as well as Science and Technology, will bode well in the coming decades. RRI feels proud to partner with WESEE in cutting edge Science and Technology,” said Professor Tarun Souradeep, director, RRI.

Professor Urbasi Sinha, Group Head, QuIC lab, said, “This is a great opportunity for us to use indigenously developed science and technology knowledge to serve our nation. We are excited about the collaboration and believe that with our expertise in the domain of secure quantum communications, we will be able to help foster cutting-edge research towards identification of potential maritime use-cases for the Indian Navy.”

This lab has been leading the country’s research in the field of secure quantum communication. Some of its major achievements include the development of an end-to-end simulation toolkit named “qkdSim”, ensuring safety in communication platforms; establishing secure communication, both between two buildings and, more recently, between a stationary source and a mobile receiver.
