What's the probability that we'll have a 3rd and 4th mission ? Is there any official input on that ?
Not an official document but we have a statement from an ISRO Official.

As per the statement, ISRO wanted to use nuclear propulsion on Cdy-2 in order to increase it's life but cancelled to avoid further delay. Instead he said, "We may use nuclear propulsion on upcoming Cdy-3&4 which we plan to conduct in near future".
Out of them, there may be sample return missions.
Go on first page at first post where I started the thread. I have mentioned it.

ISRO begins simulation tests for Chandrayaan-II

BENGALURU: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has began conducting simulation tests for its second moon mission, Chandrayaan-II at its facility in Challakere, about 200km from Bengaluru.
Sources in the ISRO said: "Some landing tests have kicked off as of now, and the project is moving ahead." ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar has made a statement in Ahmedabad that these tests are 'hazard avoidance and landing exercises.'
The second moon mission is an advanced version of Chandrayaan-I and will consist an orbiter, lander and a rover. The mission is aimed at placing an Orbiter around the moon and sending a Lander and Rover to the surface of the moon. It will be launched using the GSLV-MKII which ISRO is testing.
While the initial launch of Chandrayaan-II was scheduled much earlier, the failure on part of the Russian space agency (Roscosmos) to supply the lander, has delayed the project. The project, first conceived as a joint mission with Russia has become India's independent programme.
The tests are simulations of moon landings so as to perfect the conditions on moon. "These are routine tests before any such project. The lander is expected to soft-land on the moon and deploy the rover, so the tests here will help us understand the process better before we actually launch," another officer said.

basically all moon lander looks the same.
i think its the CDY2 test model of lander..
Soil is red -- karnataka/bangalore..

The rover seems too elementary. Won't it have any scientific payloads? Looks more like a toy in this picture.
i dnt think its the actual rover.. its just a demo/model to test the LANDER..
how else they will check whether the ladder is too steep for the original rover.
whether the rover fits in perfectly inside the lander , the impact over the rover when the lander hits ground.. etc
all need to be studies before actual rover is used..

but as per the news the lander test has been done which means this pic is very old..

It's pretty different that American Rover Concept with glider like structure for Mars. It exterts force against gravity with small rocket thrusters, leaves the rover near the surface and then, thrust upwards, finally falls far away.

In the picture, we can clearly see six wheels and the solar panel as we expected on rover. From the picture, watching a small cross section of it's platform, I don't think payloads have been kept on it yet.
Nor I know what's that black box lying near the rover is doing.

but one this its missing that both team indus and chinese has in common.. the cylindrical structure that holds the engine at the bottom.. surprisingly in this picture its at the top.. i think it has been just kept there to be fixed at the bottom later. @Indx TechStyle

the Curiosity (rover) is so 'huge' that it need that complicated Landing scheme including the marvelous Sky crane... obviously the Chandrayaan-II mission rover is a small thing (25kg) with two main payloads due to the limited GSLV Mk2 lifting capacity. you needn't that scheme and Moon has no atmosphere and much less Gravity. the current design should be the most suitable one...

The orbiter, the lander and the rover together weigh 3,280 kg; the rover weighs 25 kg and the lander 935 kg.



3280 kg is more than the GSLV Mk2's GTO capacity so the Chandrayaan-II would experience a serial of orbit raising(more than Chandrayaan-I mission) from an initial 'sub-GTO'(not a very accurate description) ejected by the launch vehicle...it will consume quite some fuel of the Chandrayaan-II Orbiter-Lander-Rover complex and take some time...

BTW, as per Japanese rover weighs 5-10 more kg than ours, both scheduled for launch on nearly same time.:rolleyes:

India needs to.operationalize LVM3 ASAP. And if it gets this December, I won't mind if mission gets delayed for a short period to undertake a heavier mission to the Moon instead. @Akask kumar

A little ? It would get delayed by a lot, because now, they'd have to do all the calculation again and increase the size of rover as well as lander, its gonna take more than just modification, I'd say, chandrayaan-3 should be deployed by LVM3, moreover, by that time we'll have SCE-200 online therefore, we can expect a large payload of the third mission as compared to first and second.

Rover weight can be less no problem .
Our priority is to demonstrate successful soft lending.
Than in successive missions we can send heavier payloads with much more meaningful task orientation.

And soon enough we need to decide on long term pattern of things .
What is our end goal on moon ??
A base , colonization??

Payloads should be designed for these objectives than . And international collaboration is inevitable.

Yup, exactly, but I would certainly like a Mangalyaan-2 with a good lander and rover launched by a LVM3, maybe I am too optimistic :biggrin2:

yes u are right , the reason curiosity used sky crane method was its weight, the mars atmosphere is so thin that for heavy class lander ,parachute mode of deceleration(through out) is not sufficient , plus the size of parachute have to be way more bigger than what normally used on mars..

the use of sky crane also omits the necessity of lander . Nasa paved the new way of landing. may be agencies in future will use the same on moon too.it will save mass .

the scientific instruments that a rover carries is more important than the mass of vehicle.. for instance

YUTU and CDY2 both carries primarily two scientific instruments.(taking out cameras here)

YUTU (140 kg)- 1> Ground-penetrating radar 2> Alpha Particle Induced X-ray Spectroscope
CDY2 rover (25 kg)- 1>Laser induced Breakdown Spectroscope 2> Alpha Particle Induced X-ray Spectroscope

you can see the difference. the difference in weight is 115 kg .. i dont think the weight is used up by radar . the wight was used in bigger and more solar panels,battery ,communication etc

So CDY2 is also a good rover designed for shorter life compared with YUTU(whose life crossed expectations)..

plus CDY2 can do composition,chemical study of Lunar surface better than YUTU ( which is targeted little towards underground mapping ) as it has two scientific instruments for just surface analysis..
